- 「神話の里」高千穂（宮崎県）のカゴノキです。
一目見て最高級の杢目が出ることを確信！！ワクワクしながら製材しました♪♪
「カゴノキ」は「鹿護木」、「鹿子木」とも書きます。幹の樹皮がまだらに剥がれ落ちた模様が鹿の子どものように見えることから名付けられました。南九州ではその模様を星に見立てて「ホシコガ」と呼んだりもします。
九州は宮崎県、霧島山の麓で夫婦で製材所を営んでいます。
木に取り憑かれて半世紀の男のロマンを発信中！
国産材、自然乾燥にこだわってやってきました。

お疲れ様です。私、土木建築系の職業訓練指導員をしています。
新人の頃、建築大工養成を担当していた大先輩指導員の方が繰返し繰返し言っていた言葉を改めて思い出しました。
それは,
「棟上げ祝いの席上で誰が一番上座に座るかわかるか?」との問いかけです。
「木こり木挽き職人や!」
との答えに何となく納得していましたが「きりしま木材さん」のお仕事を拝見して「当然だ」と確信しました。
命を持った樹木の命脈を絶つと同時に、木に新たな使命を持たせて蘇らせる「直接いのちと関わる生業」
床の間神棚お仏壇に背を向けられるのは、神仏と直接会話している「人」だけだと!!
今も棟上げ祝いに、このよき伝統は続けられているのでしょうか？

私たちも製材する前に御神酒をあげる等、命を頂いていることへ感謝しながら製材しています。
山の神の日には日頃の恩恵に感謝しながら作業の安全を祈願します。
ただ、昨今では木材が使われること自体が大きく減っているもの現実です。
このように古き良き伝統を知っていらっしゃる方がいて、コメントを下さるということはとても嬉しいです。

In Japanese, it is called "kagonoki".
It seems to be the origin that the bark becomes a fawn pattern when it grows up.
When I searched, it was "Litsea coreana, Actinodaphne lancifolia". It is a tree of the camphor tree family.
We really like the beauty of this tree.

「ほれぼれする」とは、このことか。金欄杢というのですか、この綺麗な交差する杢目のことを。そして、その杢目を表面に導くようにノコをいれるご主人の職人芸。初めて視聴させていただきましたが、こんなに綺麗な製材を見ることができて、とても嬉しいです。「ほれぼれ」なんて言葉を心に浮かべたのは久しぶりです。

Actinodaphne lancifolia, known in Japanese as kagonoki (鹿子の木, "deer calf tree") due to the texture of its bark
Such beautiful wood, it is as though the whole tree is one huge burl, and the color. The deeper you go the more awesome it becomes, I don't think you could find a bad place to cut.

I looked up this tree and the article said it was a small to medium relative of bay laurel . This tree must not have read the same story , it is HUGE .There is a photo of a young one at Van Dusen Gardens in Vancouver . It is 35 years old and thinner than a baseball bat !!! How old must this one be ???? And soooo beautiful wood !!! It must be very expensive !! It looks like the whole tree is a burl !!!

I have seen a lot of timber.
I have never ever before seen a True flame pattern combined with a True mottle pattern Suddenly combining with a Real Burl Pattern appearing all together in a one large slab like this. Not ever.
I Really hope these slabs got a good home at Guggenheim or Smithsonian.

イタリアにすんでいますが、５センチ角で2メートル3500円くらいでとても高いと思っていましたが、これを見て角材を取るのにどれだけ無駄というか使えない部分があるのかわかって納得しました。むしろ安い。ひびやふし空洞があったらもう廃材？テーブルなどに加工するのかもったいない。なんとか利用して欲しいです。

何時も楽しみに動画アップされるのを待っています!今回のかごの木は、木の持つ存在感も強く、何より杢が美しい！自然の生命力を感じました、最近動画が出ていなかったのさで心配していました!最近地松の長い材を送ってくれません4メールの長さ
地松の4メーターの野地が欲しいのですが何処の運送会社も運ばなくなりました、霧島木材さんは大型輸送をしているのでしょうか?皆自分のトラックです取りに行かないと売ってくれないのでしょうか?自分で家をなおしているので動画と関係ない話をしてしまいました！すみません応援しています!頑張ってください。

圧巻の作業に見とれてしまいました。これを男性二人と台車のオペレーターは奥様でしょうか、3名で切り出すって、いやぁ凄い。

神護木とあるが正式名は何という木なのだろうか。樹齢はどのくらいなのか。そうとう堅い木だろうが切り口にこんな赤ピンクの色が出るのは私は見たことがない。
御主人が帯鋸で切るとき木目を嬉しそうな、どうだ、という表情で見せる姿が羨ましい。

Man oh man the color n grain pattern is awesome. I love the fact you give respect to the timber before your first cut, what do you call that ? Beautiful. I don't speak Japanese but when you where pointing to the grain etc , I could almost understand what you said. Must be a timber thing.

木と語り合いながら製材しています。音や振動を直に感じながら木の反応に合わせて鋸を進めるスピード等を調整しています。そうすることで、木に負担をかけずにきれいに挽くことができます。
とは言え、危険と隣り合わせの作業であることは確かです。
これからも事故のないように細心の注意を払いながら作業していきます。
