When I first heard this song from the radio, maybe that was in the early winter season in1977 , I was deeply impressed in the piano solo by the young player who is not well known in Jazz scene. I felt brand new wind in the contemporary Jazz and fusion music scene never heard before. Lyle and Pat was about 24 years old, and I was university student also played Jazz music as amateur in the club. The ravel ECM was considered as most cutting edge music. and I liked many of their musicians. Most our excitement was the live recording with Joni Mitchell he played with synthesizer. It was very far from Japan.I couldn't go to the concert. Happily, Pat Metheny group traveled to Japan every year, I could see them many times. At first, very very few audience in the big hall, though glowing up in soon. They were young, and I was young. It seems it was the dream about forty years ago, though I think it was as if yesterdays matter. RIP Lyle
@@pedrogheventer2566 we should be thankful they chose the path that they did. Such a beautiful talent to share with the world, I’m sure their contribution to the humanities cannot be overstated to say nothing of how many other people their music had inspired. San lorenzo remains one of the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard in my life. The delicate dance and build up with each art of the song is perfectly conveyed with overwhelming emotions from the piano keys to the listeners ears. Just an amazingly composition.
I was in college when I first heard this song. I was a dumb kid and learning to play guitar, and my friend introduced me to jazz greats like Davis, Coltrane, etc. then he tells me about metheny and how great he is so he plays me San Lorenzo. But I listened and got trapped by the piano. I could not believe my ears. I’m like, “who’s this Lyle guy?” I want so bad for young people to hear his playing so they can experience wonderful music.
best song ever. Lyle Mays solo is stupendous, beyond words. I heard them do this in Denver a million years ago, drove 200 miles through a blizzard and it was more than worth it.
You Rock! This song...has to be from a spiritual place of love! I mean I am truly lost for the words to express the vibration I get from this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It never fails! The ending of this tune San Lorenzo always brings me to tears! The Pat Matheny Group : Pat Matheny, Lyle Mays, Mark Egan, Dan Gottlieb.
Yes, it's so bittersweet now to see him so young, as he is here. He was so gifted, and has left a body of work that will live on for a long, long time.
In my humble opinion, in the final part (which starts at 3:03 and ends at 4:29) you have the pleasure to listen to the most beautiful and poetic harmonics that have ever been played on a guitar in contemporary music history. Pat's tuning in this piece is something truly heavenly, and what's even more amazing is what he managed to get out of it. Of course, the other guys are phenomenal musicians too! Lyle Mays was a phenomenally gifted pianist and Mark Egan has a touch and a sense of dynamics that are simply insane. I think this track is a jazz fusion masterpiece. Let's all appreciate its magic!
You're completely correct. Yet I cannot not pull myself away from 0:00 to 3:04 either. All of it leaves me emotionally exhausted. It's that powerful. As you say, magical.
Thank you so much, Lyle, for all the beautiful music you and Pat created. Because nobody else I knew liked this music, I often would listen to it alone. It would make me feel, how lucky I was to be alive at this time, listening to this amazing music. The one and only time I saw the Pat Metheny Group in concert, was in, I think, 1977 in Honolulu. I just started listening to them for a couple of years, and I became a huge fan!! I will miss you Lyle, I will miss your amazing talent. Thank you for filling my life with pure joy. God bless you and your family and friends during this sad time.
We lost Lyle this week. I'm sad, but this tune makes me feel better. I haven't heard this in years and it brings me back to the concerts I saw with those guys. At that time they'd begin each show with Phase Dance, as I recall. One of those shows I saw, though, began with this. I thought it was a better opener. :) Just gorgeous!
At this moment we think of Lyle, who just passed away - but recognize also that Pat made absolute magic here - and during Pat's famous riff, there is some of the most poignant bass accompaniment I've ever heard. All over Lyle's emotional masterwork. An utter masterpiece. Thank you, Lyle, and all of you.
saw Pat Metheny Group at Great American Music Hall (had to look it up... it was Aug 31, 1977) recall seeing Lyle in a phone booth in the lobby calling acquaintances(?) to come on down to see the band as the venue had not been sold out. In fact, we saw the second set for free because they wanted to keep the house as full as possible. Can you believe it? Such an amazing band not selling out? (well they sold out the Mountain Winery in Aug 1989 and they were even more amazing). So crushed to see that Lyle passed away Feb 10. Such an amazing musician and composer. RIP.
My first introduction to the group. They came to Lehigh Univ and played in a lecture hall that sat 300 people. I borrowed 10 bucks for the ticket. They played a longer version. What an amazing journey!

The first time I heard this song was on TV - this performance, possibly. Young guys with long hair making some of the most amazing music I had ever heard. I had never heard of Pat Metheny or Lyle Mays. I've never forgotten them or their music.
this wonder of a song accompanies me since over forty years now and I never get tired of listening to this beauty, preferrebly on my old vinyl from 1978.
One of my favourite tunes. Especially the version from " Travels" is magnificent. I love as someone from audience is shouting : It's always so.." during Lyle's solo.
Lyle was a legend in his own time at the University of North Texas a few years before I got there. I just now saw that he passed. He shall be missed. I don't think he ever got credit for creating a style that nobody else really approached with his level of artistry. RIP Lyle.
Lyle Mays has truly been one of the greatest Keyboardists to me ever. I absolutely love everything he's done. His work with Pat Metheny and solo work is Pure Genius and this is coming from a Drummer.
Wow!!! First saw them play in 1977 while a Freshman in College in New Hampshire.... This must've been the same tour. I was so blown away by their music I immediately bought that album and each one since. Rest in Peace Lyle Mays, you're music will live on in my spirit forever...
Saw this band at the Punch and Judy in Detroit area right after this came out...and I've see PM a few times since then. Always an experience and an amazing show!
I didn't think I would like this. I often dislike live versions of precious, precise studio works. But something rang through that I didn't expect. You can hear the punctuation of the precise notes and chords - as though they are still as special to them as they are to the listener. And they're some goddam amazingly special notes and chords in this masterpiece.
Gives me chills, remembering and feeling what the PMG were (are) like live. Such heart-nurturing music. Lyle and Pat gave me some of my all-time favorite musical memories. RIP Lyle.
Yea, the live versions of San Lorenzo really explode beautifully - esp the one on the four song EP released in 1977. Much better than the studio version.

RIP Lyle, you have made this rough weird year more poignant with your death, and more tolerable with your gifts.....i have been on a Lyle binge since he died and it never ceases to bring me new things...........just the man.
agree with every word you say here......I saw Pat a bunch to times, and loved every show...but the material he did with Lyle is just different.....and PMG is as good as jazz gets......since he died, I have dug up a ton of Lyle music, and listened to it endlessly...Wichita is now effectively my favorite record.....the title cut is impossibly cool, and September 15th is perfect.

Because the Pat Metheny Group were relentless with touring, I was fortunate enough to see this song performed live maybe 15-20 times, and experienced goose bumps every time.

This composition "San Lorenzo", makes me have a fantasy about me traveling all along the Northern Canadian woods, watching a fantastic landscape showing trees, pines, creeks, hordes of wolves and randeers, mooses, but more exciting rivers with all its riples on the stream, and then a long travel across the universe. ¡¡¡Wonderful!!!
The first time I heard this piece it really moved me so much that I've played it while on the drive during funerals. It seems to me like the perfect farewell song.
Saw them at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland. 1976? 77? Played a bill with Roy Buchanan. RIP. I was 15 and high as a kite. And they were magic.
Rest easy Lyle ..... your music made a huge difference in my life. Thank you . Glad I got to see you play ..... and lift my soul.
listened to this over and over, found peace and joy here on the hardest days. lifted my soul too, still does.
I hear you brother….

KTCL out of Ft Collins was the only station to play this song along the Font Range back then- I owe them a debt of gratitude.
I'd drive forever to see PMG
Lyle Mays solo is perfection -- at least, I've always thought so.
We have lost Lyle Mays today. The world stops for a few bars.

This music is timeless... this is the most prettiest song that I have ever heard, I could listen to this all day long.
It never fails! The ending of this tune San Lorenzo always brings me to tears! The Pat Matheny Group :
Pat Matheny, Lyle Mays, Mark Egan,

This song affects me the same way. That melody, the feel and otherworldly skill of Lyle, Pat, Mark and Dan on this masterpiece of a song is legendary.
Rest In Peace, Lyle Mays. You brilliant music will continue to live on.
RIP Lyle - this is a fine example of his playing and only 24 years old here
I didn't even realize he passed away. One of my favorites. RIP
Yes, it's so bittersweet now to see him so young, as he is here. He was so gifted, and has left a body of work that will live on for a long, long time.
Lyle Mays my favorite of him is the one call Bill Evans named to honor the same piano jazz player Bill Evans .... Merci !
He was a genius !!!! Watching him play along with Pat was totally AWESOME !!!
Miss you Lyle ……. Love you Pat Metheny😘
El mejor pianista de todos los tiempos, no se que tenían estos chicos pero no hacían música, sino magia

Yes! I want that “white album” too!

THE song that turned me on to Pat Metheny. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard it...
Me to.
I can say the same the first time I heard Greenhouse by the Yellowjackets, so, I get it. This is a marvelous piece of music.
San Lorenzo bring me to the tears everytime I Heard
yes true also for me
Truer words were never spoken!
3:04 to 4:29 was magical in 1977, is magical in 2017, and will still be magical in 2217.
You're completely correct. Yet I cannot not pull myself away from 0:00 to 3:04 either.
All of it leaves me emotionally exhausted. It's that powerful. As you say, magical.
Right on.
This was an amazing band to listen to live. Unique sound.

Thank you for the music, Lyle. The 1978 studio version of San Lorenzo from the album 'Travels' is a joy. By far, my favorite PMG tune.

Been a big fan since Travels album. RIP Lyle.

Amazing!!
