    He's right you know. Standards have slipped. How can we feel accomplished, and feel we've earned our time off, when the time off is all the time?

      Giovanni Magnus honestly, I somewhat disagree. Since the workload has increased significantly for most studies and jobs, everything needs to be done faster and better at that. Stress is higher, so after work or an exam people do feel they need a mini vacation. Some people however could be stimulated more but might be lost causes.

      You are correct that more people are completing high school and earning college degrees than ever before. However, earning a high school or college degree does not necessarily equate to a greater work ethic when graduates enter the work force nor does it equate to graduates dressing appropriately for the work place. Since 1900, the number of hours worked per week on average has declined significantly. Personally, I don't think that's a bad thing because generally speaking, the more time parents can spend with their children the better and the less stress people have the better.
      However, I can't help but wonder what would happen if this generation were asked to do some of the great public works or great scientific achievements that were done in the first 70 years of the 20th century. Things like hydroelectric dams, the interstate highway system, the Panama Canal, or going to the moon. All of these things took massive effort and far more hours than the standard 40 hour work week and much smarter use of money than we could do today. You may look at these accomplishments as nothing special, but ask yourself why nothing similar is being done today in the U.S. or by U.S. workers. Could today's recent college graduates do these things? Maybe, but I'm not so sure they would be willing to sacrifice the way previous generations did.

      @caliban7870 Před 7 lety

      Dr. TJ
      To be fair to my generation, we're going to have to perform some even greater public works than those you've mentioned. Fixing the ever more erratic climate (or at the very least mitigating the damage) might be the greatest example.
      And part of the problem may be a lack of opportunity to rise to the occasion in creating lasting generational monuments. The current federal government isn't investing in the people but in tax cuts. It makes it difficult to compete in generational comparison when no one is taking the helm. This doesn't even take into account the massive debt we've already been settled with (form college loans), which will occupy a significant portion of our energy fending off.
      All I'm really saying is it's impossible to compare the works of a previous generation with the potential of the current one without laying out all of the extenuating circumstances.

      You do realize that I said that I don't think it's a bad thing that people are working fewer hours these days, don't you? My comment was only to ask if today's generation could step up and do some of the things that were done by previous generations that required a tremendous work ethic if they had to. Today's generation might be able to if they had to, then again, maybe not. I worked with younger people before I retired and many of them gave up on problems that I ended up solving. I solved those problems by working longer and harder than they were willing to do. It certainly doesn't mean that all young people are this way, but it was my experience with my co-workers.

    • @Dr.TJ1
      @Dr.TJ1 Před 7 lety +2

      Caliban 7
      I don't think that solving the climate change issue is that difficult. We already know how to create green energy and we know that burning coal and oil must be stopped sooner rather than later. Of course convincing idiots to do the right thing is more difficult. I would call solving climate change more of a technological issue rather than a work ethic issue. Oil companies and the government should be investing heavily in solar panel materials research and energy storage solutions. Every time I debate a climate change denier, I tell them that the sun provides 20,000 times more energy each day to the Earth than all humans consume in a day and it's totally free energy. That tends to shut down the debate pretty quickly.
      I completely agree with you on taxes and where the money is being spent. When the interstate highway system was initiated under Eisenhower, the top federal income tax was 90% and many people see that as the best economy this country has ever had. I'm not advocating a 90% top tax rate, but you sure as hell can't have massive infrastructure spending while cutting taxes as Trump has proposed. It's just a stupid plan, but then you have to consider the source.

    I’ve always hated summer ever since I was born. It’s too damn hot, and I don’t know why everyone schedules their vacations during summer. I usually take my vacation in the fall when it actually makes sense to go outside and enjoy nature without sweating buckets and getting skin cancer.

      Schools let out in the summers a hundred years ago so that children could work in the fields during summer. Now, with no family farms and global warming giving us Temps over 100 degrees, outside is empty with melting asphalt in the streets, kids are locked in for 3 months with parents begging for summer camps, anything. It just doesn't occur to school systems to change summer breaks to spring or fall. Maybe they just don't want to pay air conditioning bills.

    This one I agree with. I'm old and remember when intelligent educated people were the goal, for schools, for society, and for government. Then came the dumbing up of America beginning in the 1980s. School standards slipped to fill in the bubble tests and regurgitating on printed worksheets instead of reading, interpreting and analyzing, making conclusions and having to support them. Now Americans skip higher order thinking, reading, and art. Now we go to Tictoc, CZcams, and Fox for KNOWLEDGE. No wonder we are ripe victims for the corporate state and fascist persecution.

I wish I could go back to university again . I knew a couple students that thought as you do and they were so negative and didn't accept any responsibility. Meanwhile other students made the most of it, made contributions and got something out of it. I am not sure where you are from, perhaps it is a problem there, or your particular school, but not all students feel the same way you do about school. (I don't teach in the US).

      mostliberal fair point. Definitely not for anyone. I loved University, but for many people it is not for them and that is fine. I had social anxiety as a shy geeky kid in high school and there were some unpleasant students there, but I still overall enjoyed seeing my friends, going to class, crushing on girls, etc. My point was not all schools are "torturous, and uninspiring". Perhaps for some, but not everyone.

      I graduated school with top honors and I can honestly say that I don't feel I left school content with my experience. Many American learning institutions are particularly rigid in their curriculums, leaving no room for variables such as students who cannot adjust themselves to the teaching methods used by instructors. We do not all learn the same and that aspect is not accounted for

    I think it's the exact opposite. Most Americans work harder for less money. So quite a few now work 50, 60, 70 or more hours a week. Summer is for kicking back? Hardly. That's when jobs tend to be most plentiful. If people are being stupid, it's because they are taking 5 minutes out if the day of non stop seriousness year round. Americans work longer and harder than any industrialized country. Yet we feel our standard of living slipping.

    You know, apart from his Chronic but increasingly overlookable TDS, I’ve been enjoying more and more Bill Maher’s new rules lately as a right wing conservative leaning libertarian, especially as his liberal self now a days is more and more in line with even PragerU (says everything about the in control left now a days). This is a gem from years past that I can wholeheartedly agree with and love. I guess selective fandom is the way to go here
    Edit. My point is that this gem of a video makes Bill Maher sounds more and more centrist and relatable even to those on our sides

    Maher is right about the movies. I remember a few years ago there were back-to-back releases of new horror movies in theaters at least 4 or 5 months before Halloween and I remember thinking to myself "Are Americans trying to have self-induced heart attacks all the time?"

    There's no set standard for " earning" something. All people are capable of different strides. Then who is it to judge how difficult one's strife truly is? I think- Often a gift has more lessons warped in it. Rather than something an individual purchased from their salary. The awesome value of a present, (especially gifted from a loved one) is the most easy to cherish, and hold.
