I first saw this masterpiece as an undergraduate at Yale in the 70s. I never forgot it. I am a longtime student of film, and acquired the Criterion edition of it about 40 years after seeing it for the first time. I've seen so much, but if someone held a gun to my head and asked me to name the most moving, great film I have ever seen, it would almost certainly be this.
this scene immediately brought to mind for me the passage book of Job wherein God shows Job the monsters Behemoth and Leviathan and says 'as I made them, so I made thee'
This scene is one of the most impressive in the whole movie. Shocking!
These animals seem to share more compassion and understanding in 30 secs than any of the human characters ever manage in the film
