I am 82, I had three uncles fight in WWII, all survived. One as a medic in europe, one in the merchant marines on many convoys to England and on D day was in the convoy to the initial invasion in Europe, the third fought in Guadalcanal. All survived and had successful lives living to late nineties. THe other two uncles served in Korea one the entire war and survived pork chop hill, the other saving the life of a General by caring him from a building that had been attacked. My mother was the only girl in the family. God was good to them they were known as the BATT BOYS for years after their service. This is the only video I have seen on Guadalcanal. MKL

My uncle Jimmy Castro served at Guadalcanal. In fact he was even mentioned in the famous book about the battle called “Guadalcanal Diary” written by three authors whose names I have forgotten over the years. Though the fighting was horrendous and inhuman, on both sides, my uncle Jimmy returned home as he left. He was the kindest and most gentle person I have ever known and I will always be proud and thankful that he was a part of my life.

I had an uncle that fought in this battle. He was apart of the first generation marines, I can’t remember what his regiment was. He would tell me about how one night they looked down at the pacific fleet that MacArthur was in charge of being attacked thinking they were beating Japan. The morning after, they went down to the beach only to receive that famous message from MacArthur: “I shall return”. He told me how crazy it felt to know they were trapped. He was only 15/16 when he was there. I don’t remember which other battle this was, but he also fought off a Japanese soldier with his bare hands and also another one where he was nicked by a sniper bullet. He even showed me his scar on the top of his head. He had medals, and a couple Purple Hearts. He died in 2017, and he was a very proud American despite being Hispanic. He also helped my parents and my family during hard times RIP

We thank your Uncle and Family for his Bravery.
Hispanic, Caucasian, Black , Native, all of us are Family. Our origins are the Valley. Lets stop the Division now. We are one and letting anyone fuel hatred between US is not a Patriot like your Uncle and my Father were. They were two Brother’s who never met but who would’ve given their lives for each other. Two strangers who were Brothers. We are Brothers and Sisters too.
Stop the Divide, embrace one another.
We are in some bad times, protect your neighbors, love and support one another.
They hate us all, I went to a Rally. Those who supported Hamas told us “from Sea to Sea a Palestinian flag is all you will see”
My feelings about means zero it is meaningless. I am a nobody but I am your Brother and will fight for our Nation. My feelings about hatred is I have no room for it in my Heart.
I will fight to my Death but only to Save lives of my Family , neighbors and myself .

@@billpollard5051 I wonder if you were interested to know more, you might be able to get hold of his military service records? I don't know where you apply to in the US, it may be that you just need his name & date of birth to get started? I believe you don't need to be a relative to apply. It does help when looking here in the UK, to have the regiment as well as those details, but I imagine that the process would just take a bit longer without it, rather than make it impossible? I'm very glad that I could find out from another record, that my Grandpa was in the Green Howards, I'm in the process of planning a trip to the regiment's museum. It's fascinating stuff, so many of us would not even exist if our grandfathers had not made it home. We have a lot to be grateful for, all because those young men did what had to be done & made it back home, to make a new life in a new world. I humbly thank them all, every single one of the Allies, including your assistant Scoutmaster, for their service.

Later he got a letter from a friend from the Chicago... he kept his rough draft of his response letter.

There were a few errors though - for example Crutchley did not inform the two outer most TFs of his absence but he did tell the southern group that he was directly commanding and left a senior captain, Bode, in command.
Bode committed suicide, because he rightly was blamed for his incredible errors such as not taking his ship (with radar) to the front of the formation, no staying awake to command the force in Crutchley’s absence, not advising the other TFs that his southern force was under attack (what the fuck?!) and after Mikawa moved off to engage the northern force, Bode just kept sailing away in his ship without trying to engage or turn back to assist the damaged ships of his force.
In essence, Bode did every single thing possible wrong. Crutchley must just hear some responsibility of course because it was his task group naturally, but Bode did everything in his power to fuck it up for Crutchley and the other ships of the group.
Once Bode, who was a distinctly arrogant and unlikeable character before Savo, realized the scale of his ineptitude and dereliction of duty, he killed himself.

Glad that this video showed the small terrain details that had so much effect on the battle. The huge amount of hills and knolls and that immensely long trail hacked through the jungle by Japanese engineers. Also, the single log bridge and the crude, camouflaged pillboxes at the Gifu give a sense of what it was like for individuals taking part. Not just a video of broad troop movements over bland, featureless maps. Thanks everybody!

From the battle plans set in a sepia tone, to the sound of the cogs whenever the day changes, everything is designed to give all the information you would want from an over the top perspective of the battlefield. Thank you so much for your effort. And I am looking forward to more videos like this for different theatres.

Haven't watched this yet but really interested in what you have to say. I used to volunteered at a retirement home in the late 2010's and I distinctly remember this older gentleman named Clifford. He was a man with great manners and always of good humor, helping others, slow to angry, always appreciative of his caretakers. I remember talking to him and he told me that in all his years he learned that generally all people are pretty decent, black, white, Asians, all people. However, mid sentence his smile disappeared and a sullen look consumed his face as he said: "except for the Japs... You can never trust a Jap". Turns out Clifford fought in Guadalcanal and that experience was deeply troubling to him,to say the least. After watching the pacific I understand a bit of what Clifford went through and I look forward to this documentary. Despite everything, Clifford is (or was, as he may be dead now) a great man and its a real shame that great men are sometimes forced to go through the most harrowing of journeys.

I talked to a pacific vet as well who said after their surrender they were moving into Japan to occupy it and a column of Japanese soldiers was being escorted by. Someone opened fire and then everyone joined in. They just wiped out the prisoners. It's understandable but at the same time impossible to understand.
