  • In this video, Kenneth Serrao, Venture Capitalist, Founder & CIO at Alpha Capital Advisors Private Limited, IIM A Alum, talk about b - school, work culture and what really matters even decades after your MBA.
    Summary
If you think that an MBA will give you a leg up, you’re right. But beware, because many MBA graduates end up in mediocre jobs, making even less than a well-paid maid. In this video, Kenneth paints the reality of doing an MBA.
He shares how after a decade or so, your degree may become redundant. He talks about how placements are not the be and end all at b - school. He shares how the most important skill you need to pick up is communication. He talks about how every job becomes a sales job after some years. With anecdotes on financial markets, he shares his tales of studying at IIM A, and how excellence is a learned quality. He talks about putting your head down and working hard during your years at b - school because hard work pays. Finally, Ken talks about humility and figuring out what career path one can take.
If you’re curious about how an MBA graduate thinks, acts and believes, even 20 years after graduation, this is a must watch for you.
    Key Takeaways
When at b - school, you need to put your head down and study. You need to focus on your academics in order to get the best out of b - school.
After a point, all jobs involve some kind of sales skills.
Communication is an important skill to learn, no matter what job you’re in.
Doing an MBA after some work experience may be more impactful.
No matter where you are, your attitude matters.

They're the underprivileged people. MBAs are learned and graduated people with pretty decent soft skills. Why would they want to look up to a job like those of servants or taxi drivers, just for money, when they actually got much better education, opportunities and trainings and skill set-ups ? Ofcourse nobody who's a postgraduate would do that. Then why even compare ? Nonsense 😅

Yes, that felt a bit harsh. A lot of people can write code, but it takes quite a lot of imagination and clarity to be a good coder. There can not be an absolute ranking of skills. All skills are important. A good team would need people of all spheres and I think being inclusive and understanding of every person's skills makes a person really humble.

I am from a tier 3 Bschool so May be a a little rattled by his statement but hey what he said there doesn’t hold much water. Tier 3 Bschool grads if continue to work harder at their jobs, can grow a lot provided they keep working harder to bridge the gap between them and their Top tier Bschool colleagues/bosses. What the guest says after that makes a lot of sense.

This kind of MBA idiots think that selling is the only thing in one's life/job and research/engineering are low level jobs, I am surprised specifically when this is coming from a so called Army kid who once aspired to be IAF pilot willing to stake everything for nation. The life goes much beyond the selling/survival and so called success defined by IIMs/IITs. Get some life guys, this is a country of 1.3 Billion people, not everyone is from IIM here but still the country is doing great. None of the ISRO scientists are from IIMs and there is a remote chances of even from IITs. Well he is getting a lot of flak because he said that some skills are low levels. He is not wrong. We Indians, specially engineers put in a lot of emphasis on technical skills without understanding the need for soft skills. Telling a story, making strong relationships, finding reliable business partners, selling a product are equally important, if not more. The success of a business venture depends more on soft skills of the founders, more than the technical abilities.
As a person who started his own successful business he understands this.
and please don't be cocky. Every skill that is hyped as the new gold mine of opportunities, is eventually made insignificant by the next wave of technologies. Most of the trading jobs in top wall street banks, which were hyped 20 years back have vanished and are replaced by algorithms. If any skill can be taught to you, then obviously an AI can be trained to do exactly what you do.
The future will belong to knowledge workers, who are specialised in some domain in such a way that his job can't be taught. If I somebody can sit at home and gain a skill by following online modules, then probably it is a not high level skill.

Please stop these degree based knowledge. Let's keep basic 12 and then anyone can do anything. And those who have special interest they will get to do intern with people of that field. Degrees make most deviate from their natural flow of mind. And rest of the life becomes a life of regret for most of the road not taken.
