MIDI was used in analog synthesizers, as well as digital synthesizers. In most polyphonic analog synthesizers, microprocessors were used to scan the keyboard and assign played notes to the analog voices. With that system, is was possible to include MIDI in many analog synthesizers.

Dave Smith is like Bill Gates, he ripped off the basis from Roland's DCB and used Chet Wood(Dave's "Wosniak") to repackage it. If only Dave was smart enough to patent it and collect a royalty like Lucas is with surround sound ! But Roland would have sued his ass Godzilla style ! And now almost 40 yrs later we're reverting back to CV ? Go figure ! The next step is is a midi layer over ether or wifi. This will allow smart devices and ipads to easily integrate over an existing ether network. Or a band playing with members located in different geographical areas of the world. There is technology currently to address latency issues.

I moved and lost a hard drive, a few years ago, so it could be gone. But most of it is from MIDI Association, Some midi spec manuals, and lots of video interviews of David Smith, which I probably didn't write down in a bibliography.

you are incorrect about modulation, volume, pan etc being on different channels. They are on continuous controller numbers...and can all be on any channel

You are correct. Not sure how that slipped through editing.
