    Wow this thing sounds awesome, ive had one sitting in a box right now, im waiting for my new stand to set it up. Ill have a wasp, model d and this one a 3 tier stand.

      That sounds like a great setup! I really like the WASP filter a lot!

      Thank you! I will make some more sounds using noise to PWM modulation etc and mixing two signals in the voltage processor.

    Just to explain some of the workings of the expander. 1: Volume on the oscillator 1 also regulate its output into the out socket. And 2: The voltage processor is more complex that I let on in this video :)

    What is the catch? Why is the price so low?

    • @henrikstolpe
      @henrikstolpe  Před 6 měsíci +4

      No catch! They have done mass production and costbased manufacturing of a UK made design, and it is based on an extremly nice sounding synth. It holds its own next to my vintage minimoog and my prophet 5 rev4, quite extraordinary. But the original Kobol was that good and even though they didnt use the original SSM2040 filterchip or the clone, they made a very convincing filtercircuit that compares pretty well to the 2040clone in my P5 Rev4.

    Are you running through any effects?
    I just got my Kobol - following your tutorial, copying the controls. At 1:20 and my PWM sounds super thin - no chorus vibe at all.

    • @henrikstolpe
      @henrikstolpe  Před 7 měsíci +3

      Hi, no effects of any kind, and I didnt use my fancy preamps. Do you have the syncswitch on? Takes some dialing in to get it right, but should be quite fat when the beating between the oscillators are good.

    The LFO gets applied to both oscillators on my Kobol, leading to had pitch mod on osc2.
    Plugging a wire in VCO mod in keeps the pwm but removes the modulation of the pitch.
    Switches: mod off, synchro, LFO

    Sounds a lot like the Pro One.

    • @henrikstolpe
      @henrikstolpe  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Certainly a similarity in the envelopes but the filter sounds quite different.

      @@henrikstolpe I remember this used a lot by Depeche Mode, Yazoo, and others, it does have a nice filter, 2040 if I am right. The Pro One and this would be a good match, and the WASP I like too. Please make some more demo's, I am considering buying this in the UK, stock arriving 20th January.

      Not even close Bro, not even close. The Kobol doesn´t lose base when opening Resonance. The Pro One VCF is a downer.

    All this uli clones do sound same to me even this is one of the best.

    • @henrikstolpe
      @henrikstolpe  Před 8 měsíci +4

      Well this certainly has a very different schematic than the Odyssey and WASP, and MS-1, which are the only ones Ive tried and they all sound quite different. I would say that this is one of the more solid ones from a bug perspective though, so one of the best as you say! I do however think that the vintage units differ a bit in that they have more distorsion i their signalpaths. Newer ones lacks a bit of instability and subtle distorsion. But this is true also for Moog , Korg and Sequentials remakes of their machines. Often this issue seems to be due to gain staging and components in the VCA's. I guess if a company uses similar components and designs in the last output stages, then they may get some sameness to the sound, but there is no evidence that B should o that more than anyone else. The difference between analog synths is usually in the filter at high resonance and envelope timing anyway, with generic ettings most analog synths sound similar.

      I love my 70´s EMS, EML, Moogs, etc and totally dislike modern analogues even from Moog, sound as a plug in. @@henrikstolpe

      @@falangistavaleroso9689I agree that my vintage minimoog, micromoog etc certainly sounds more alive than the modern moogs.

      same with vintage DBX compressors vs. 90´s one. I own a 160sl that was their top in the 90s and the 160 or 165 prior are way better. I believe is due to components not make any more.@@henrikstolpe
