What a wonderful and telling effect: The soaring lyrical strings interrupted by the dead thud of the bass drum. (by the way, the bass drum does not usually sound so dead, It must have been slackened to get this amazing and thrilling effect.) Yes, all of Tosca is thrilling but Puccini couldn't resist making the opera even more thrilling with this effect by contrasting the lush compassionate strings with a dead thud of death of the bass drum. Bravo! Puccini was the greatest orchestrator of all time. He has the genius to interrupt an established texture with the greatest of surprises. (Mahler upon hearing Tosca commented--and I paraphrase "what right has he to write an opera when he is nothing more than a good orchestrator"). Do you dare agree with Mahler?

I'm pretty certain in the score that there is the sound of a cannon here along with the bass drum!

@@MrJsmiley108 You certainly make a good point. I have not seen the score and in some recording, you do seem to hear a cannon fired at the Castello Nuovo. At any rate, a cannon serves the purpose of contrast to the lush compassionate (the deceptive sound of the strings). Thanks for your post. .As we see later, while Scarpia is evil, he can remember the time as a child, perhaps when he had not set his diabolical course. No doubt he reassures himself that he was forced by circumstance to choose the dark force (and perhaps helped along by the devil as well.

This is my favorite portion of Tosca with Scarpia and the chorus. Milnes is magnificent with a powerful stage presence. The disconnect between the solemnity of the church (no doubt, the Pope is saying mass) and Scarpia' s lustful thoughts as he schemes to destroy Tosca' s lover and claim Tosca for himself is jarring. Even he recognizes it when he sings that Tosca has made him forget God.

I enjoyed the voice immensely. It is the staging and direction that I object to. The catholic ritual of a te deum is being performed. That is a hymn of thanksgiving to God. The consecrated host is taken from the altar and presented to the crowd in a monstrance. Catholics believe that Christ is present in the host, In most stagings of the opera the priest raises the host and Scarpia sings Tosca you make me forget god. In effect renouncing God in Gods presence, a foreshadowing of all the evil to come in the rest of the opera. Check out Raimondi performance to see what I mean.
