Fun Facts about me:
~ I’ve never owned a vehicle (Or Drivers license)
~ Smartphone either
~In 2008 I sold my home in Calgary Alberta & moved over 5000 kilometers to a place I’d never been after deciding life was too short & have been making things up ever since, living free and on my own terms connected to nature. (I'd never seen or heard of sea glass before moving to a road which turns to dirt, then falls into the sea, however its discovery was inevitable as its everywhere!)
~ My first 2 summers on Cape Breton were spent working on a farm, living in a tent next to a cornfield. We had to walk a kilometer to the farmhouse & back everyday for water, showering when it rains or the closest body of water (side note, I learned quickly soap won’t lather with saltwater!).🙃
Those experiences further enhanced my appreciation for life’s simplicities & the importance of living on ones own terms…1000 generations have led to these moments (Long days spent on my knees harvesting are probably why I’m such a good picker!)
~ I’ve never had a resume
~ I'm Left handed (Teaching myself music was upside-down!)
~ I spend under $100 on clothing a year. ( Which you might of noticed)
~ I spend $0.00 on takeout food a year however do appreciate (and miss) the tastes of each and every restaurant chain.
~ Everyday I walk my doggies (off leash by the sea or through the woods) a minimum of 10kms a day. Since moving to Cape Breton we’ve walked the equivalent of earths circumference together without leaving the island! 🌎
~ My 120 year old (one bedroom) home doesn’t have a dryer, or bathtub, or foundation. During the coldest winter chill I’ve gone weeks without running water. It’s “cottage living” year round. A small brook runs behind my home, it’s an ancient game trail once used by indigenous people and early settlers, despite urbanization any animal imaginable can follow the stream past my window to my amazement! (Growing up in Montreal the largest undomesticated animal I’d ever encountered was a squirrel!).
~ In my youth I wanted to be John Lennon when I grew up. His words & message have always spoke dearly to me heart.
~ That being said, I live my life like a Beatles song & do my best to “Radiate Everything I Am” without fear & be the change I want to see In the world .
~ Born & raised Anglophone in Montreal, I speak French as well & learned enough Spanish, Croatian & Arabic to get myself into conversations which are over my head but good fun!
~ I don’t eat meat with the exception of when kind neighbors leave a food basket on my front step, then I won’t waste it.
~ In person my excitement level is greatly amplified, no matter the activity.
~ Music-wise, I'm probably listening to the year"1993" (The sounds of my youth) although the years which surround it are awesome as well!
~ Mostly, If you think I’m passionate about sea glass, I wish you could see me with my children & the special relationship we have. They are my destiny & life’s greatest gift!
~ If you've made it this far theirs's one more thing I wanted you to know however its not easy for me to say:
Every moment I struggle with the Symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome, which might help with understanding why I'm so passionate, have a great memory, a terrible grip & live the secluded life of a sea hermit, safe for my children. (Also why I always have music on as it helps keep me "out" of my head).
I've such a deep rooted empathetic connection to the world. Each and every one of you mean so very much to me, I cant thank you enough for your love and positive support!
The world is a better place when we're able to treat a stranger like an old friend and make them feel good about themselves!

I am getting ready for work and watching this and I have to share something with you. My father passed away back in 1997. For yearrrrrrrrs whenever I am worrying or maybe leaning toward worry for anything, somehow the saying " dont worry be happy" always finds its way to me. Either in the Bob Marley song " Three Little Birds " or someone has it written somewhere or like this video, your smiley face moment. So thank you !!!! You made my day before it even really starts 🧡💛💚💙. Great video yet again !

Nugget, yay!!! That black dot in it is quite intriguing, as is the tiny glass piece with two bits of wire embedded. I never would have guessed what the claw you found is from but it sure is an awesome find. Love that purple marble!!! My biggest smile came from the smiley eraser though. I used to collect yellow smiley items and to this day always sign my name with a smiley at the end. I hope your home didn't suffer any damage from the ice and hours without heat. All of that ice makes for such a strange combination of beauty and sadness. Your videos are always like a ray of sunshine Mike. Thanks for sharing!

My home didn’t suffer any damage, the very old tree behind my home was damaged considerably, and fortunately it was the side opposite my home!💨🥶
I’m so glad you enjoyed the mystery “clear” find (I’m hypothesizing it may be lead, as Crystal is 2%-25% lead) and glad you appreciated the claw as well. I’ll leave it out at my “sea glass shanty” eventually a marine biologist will stop by and positively identify it! 💫

Great video and great finds Mike. Thanks for taking us to the beach with you. I worked in a glaziers shop when I first left school and we called that safety glass, "Georgian Wire Plate". As I'm a Scot I thought I would also let you know that the Kay in White & MacKay is pronounced MacEYE. 👍

Cape Breton was primarily inhabited by Scottish & Irish migration during the 1800s the last name “MacKay” is one of the more common family names to this day…however they definitely don’t pronounce it “traditionally” (lol) I’m excited to share that little bit as well with my neighbours!💯

GREAT finds, Mikee - especially that purple marble and that beautiful clear nugget with the black dot in the middle! The sea-lion claw was an interesting find as well; I hope you brought it home.
The ice photos at the end were really pretty.... but it pains me to know you went so long without power and heat, that's just dreadful! I hope you were able to bundle up in some cozy blankets or at least a sleeping bag to stay warm.
And I absolutely agree with you -- the "frozen Charlottes" are definitely creepy!

I’m starting to hypothesize the “black” may actually be Lead, in a raw form (as crystal is anywhere from 2%-25% lead in content).💫
It was -4 inside my home (-18 outside, I had to build a cocoon out of every shard of linen in my home to keep going!)🥶

Cape Breton Island is quite the spot for sea glass, as I moved here “from aways” (as locals put it 🙃) in 2008 I’m absolutely awestruck by my finds, also how so many locals still discard into the ocean, brooks, random nature spots even “storm sewers “
The cultural Anthropologist I am have learned it’s something that’s been passed down through the family trees, just like properties….if my parents did it, then I can, is the mentality (which is where my finds originated from). 💯
What a fantastic video, Mike! You had some really beautiful finds (loved the purple marble). I got such a kick out of you identifying the ice from the insulators, just like you explain where the glass comes from 😅. I hope you, the boys & your dogs found a way to stay warm during your power outage ... glad you're up and running again!

My children & doggies left 3 hours after I lost power (I’m extremely grateful my ex took the doggies as they’re quite old, nervous as well!)

I hope you enjoyed this Beachcombing adventure!…Indeed I’m grateful to no longer be shivering in my dark, sub-zero home doing my best to “self-preserve” under a cocoon of blankets counting the seconds. (So grateful my ex. was able to take the doggies as they were in rough shape after night one).
Considering how much I appreciated the little I have in life (before this) those sentiments are now amplified…considerin myself extremely fortunate to not be homeless and deeply empathized with them throughout my quite time. I do aspire to help those who have no light (or heat) at the end of the tunnel somehow! 💯 (just not sure how!).

Wow the two chunky finds at the start of the video was amazing. Then as you went along the finds just got better and better. I’m so glad you enjoyed the finds and knowledge here, looking back on the few hours of recording I could tell how uncomfortable things were (and wasn’t feeling as if the finds were too spectacular “in the moment”) however I’m so glad to have the adventure.
I’d love to share all my bottles however they’re absolutely everywhere! I do have a cabinet with my favourite finds in my “cold storage” room but they only scratch the surface.
Side note….This video took 10 hours and 43 minutes (across 3 different days) to put together….at least an hour of that time went into looking for my Japanese “ohajiki” and blue medicine bottles (which I know I have more of somewhere, but couldn’t locate).
I’m so so so glad you enjoyed everything, it’s my absolute pleasure and privilege to share my life with you…hopefully one day we’ll get to beachcomb together!
I am so happy with your program. It makes me feel like I am sharing your hunt. I have been without a vehicle for 6 mos. So I haven’t been to the ocean for anything. Hopefully soon I will have wheels again soon! Loved the story about frozen Charlotte dolls. Keep going!

As I walk the beaches hunting for these beautiful treasures I love to imagine the journey and history of each piece. Your videos and knowledge have helped me piece together more of the possible history of what the ocean shares with me. I'm desperately waiting for access to any of my favorite spots, right now there's too much snow and ice to safely get down to the shore. I was going to say that I'm being distracted by all the pretty shells and rocks. I think I saw a greenish piece of glass directly in front of the camera at 3:09 then you put your elbow on it when you showed us the flat blue marble. That is an amazing claw.

I’m so glad you appreciated that claw. It’s now a part of my artifact collection, one day a marine biologist will stop by and positively identify it for me however I’m confident of what it is….that sea lion sat on the beach for months on end until being swept away by a winter storm…it was extremely unpleasant in sooo many ways!💯 I’ll honour its life now.

I am happy to hear that you guys kept warm during the storm? What an adventure. I grew up in Quebec without heat, electricity or water. Wood stove of course. Remember had to get water at the well, and I was afraid of the frogs. By the way what is the name of the book you wrote? Read the little blurp about you, and I was born in Montreal myself. Just stayed 2 yrs though. French Canadian I am.

Life is definitely easier in 2022 in contrast to a few decades ago, many homes out this way are still on well water. (My children love chasing frogs!)
I self published a book called “Sea Glass: Piecing together history” and while it is a Canadian bestseller, I do nothing to promote it (because it’s self published and therefore smaller than the “masterpiece” book I aspire to one day publish)

Just makes me itch to get to the beach. Also, makes me so grateful that here in southern Australia, our beaches don't ice up and become hazards like your local beach !..oh, and thanks for solving the mystery for me of those tiny deep purple pieces. Imagine if the large clear piece with a spot in center was an old sulphide marble....oooh it prob. Isn't, but that's where my mind went wen u showed it😆

Wonderful array of finds. Could the little shaped piece of glass with the two wires have been part of a chandelier? I bought some drops to use as Christmas tree decorations once from an antique stall in Yorkshire which had those little wires
