Song of Songs: The Bible Explained

  • Watch our Introduction video on the book of Song of Songs, which outlines the book's main theme and how it is fulfilled in Jesus.
Song of Songs tells a story about love, longing, passion, and waiting through a collection of songs about a bride and a groom. People often think this book is only about sexual intimacy or only a metaphor for our relationship with God. The beauty of this song, and why it is the called the greatest song ever written, is that it is about both. Only when we are intimate with God can we be properly intimate with anyone else. Only when we give holy love to others are we truly living in God's holy love for us.
Ultimately, though, Song of Songs is about absence and longing. There are constant warnings to not awaken love until the proper time mixed with seasons of the groom's absence that leave the bride desperate and alone. This longing is meant to frame what is our common experience of God's presence. Yes, there are times of beautiful intimacy where we feel close to God. But there are also seasons that seem to interrupt that intimacy with doubt, absence, and a sense of longing.
We hope this introduction to Song of Songs helps you understand and appreciate this important book. We also hope it validates your sense of longing and feelings of absence, showing you that God knows they exist and is drawing near to you to bring healing and satisfaction in the person of Jesus.

I think the first time I ever realized the true meaning of sex was when I watched Outlander. Clair and Jaime get married and they didn’t know each other that well. They spend hours getting to know eachother, and reveal their feelings for eachother and then do it. It shows the change from friendship to love and the sacredness of marriage. It was so beautiful, and then I finally understood why sex should only happen in marriage; marriage is a protection of the heart, and it keeps the heart safe. To show your whole self to someone takes a lot of trust, and for someone to marry you is their oath. Divorce was never meant to exist, and I know that people have reasons for divorce; what I’m saying is that before sin there was no reason for divorce, because there was no brokenness in a marriage. Divorce can happen for good reasons, and that is not something I doubt. I’m just saying that since marriage is a promise, that is why sex is meant to only happen in marriage. As much as someone can love you, if they haven’t made those vows yet then you should not give your whole self to them yet; because they have not made an oath to stay no matter what yet. You are worth the wait my dear, and if someone isn’t willing to put into law their oath then they are not worth your all. Don’t give yourself away until you two make that oath. Sex is fun, but when you are married you can be at ease because they have pledged themselves to you.

Thank you for your beautiful comment. Yes, eros is one of the strongest powers, and we should only have access to it when it has become intertwined and in service of a greatest power, the Power of Love, a Love which is acknowledging to be one only thing with another soul, which determines the reason to get united in the body too. I only disagree with one point: in the early Christian age marriage was not a promise. The idea of marriage implying a vow and a promise is very late, it only comes up within Catholicism in the Middle Ages. When a mother gives birth to her baby she doesn't promise she'll love it, feed it, watch over it and take care of it. She simply naturally does that out of her own need and pleasure to do that. So do true lovers.

This was absolutely beautiful. I started crying around 5:16, when it started talking about our desires to be desired and loved perfectly. Sundays have been a little hard for me over the past half year or so; my boyfriend and I broke up in January, but we're still attending the same church. We both genuinely believed we were going to get married-- he actually proposed a few months before the breakup, and I was engaged very briefly before I realized we really needed to work through more things first. And then it turned out there was a /lot/ of stuff going on below the surface that I had been blinding myself to. I only started fully seeing it after my boyfriend thankfully ended things. While the relationship was going, I pretty much /had/ to blind myself, because I felt like the decision had already been made-- we'd agreed we would get married, I was my beloved's and my beloved was mine-- and if this was the man God had for me, then I had to just be content and accept the way things were, because I really couldn't expect more.
I am definitely at peace with how things turned out-- I thank God almost daily that He didn't let us go through with it-- but it still hurts. This was the man I thought I would be spending the rest of my life with, and while I'm glad now that I won't, I still care about him and miss him. Even after we've started talking a little more now, it's hard seeing him on Sunday and knowing that I am no longer his and he is no longer mine.
But thank God that there is a greater love waiting for me. Thank God that I don't have to settle for less because I think I don't deserve more. Thank God that He cared for and /wanted/ me so badly that He was willing to die to get me, and He will never just tolerate me or make me feel like I'm difficult to love; He will not remain distant, He will not make me constantly chase after Him, but He will pursue me like a bridegroom who will never, ever let me go.

Marriage is a covenant, I am glad he allowed things to happen so you won’t feel like you are stuck and being married to someone for the motion! Everything happens for a reason , Roman’s 8:28. He loves you and he wants someone who loves him and will completely love you for who you are no matter what ! Praying for your healing ! God is close to the broken hearted and he has a man of God out there who will fulfill your hearts desire ! Blessing

Saturday is Sabbath. Satan and the world has deceived many into thinking it’s on Sunday. there will be a petition for Sunday worship - deny it and do not sign for it is of the antichrist to come.
trust in Jesus Christ. for his plans are greater than ours and he wants the best for us. i was in a 5yr relationship that ended 3yrs ago. i am now getting over it and Jesus hasn’t given up on me. he never has. i had a lot to work on. i lost myself in that relationship. i was putting her first - waking up, going throughout my day, and going to bed talking to her on the phone. Jesus is a jealous God, he loves us so much it’s unimaginably impossible to fully comprehend. therefor why shouldn’t he come first above all else? put him first ALWAYS! for we are not here on earth for long, but with Jesus Christ for eternity if we are welcomed into his kingdom.
God bless you. don’t lose hope - your hope is in Jesus Christ

I went to a Catholic High School. During Bible class I would sneak and read Song of Songs instead of the assigned verses we were studying. I always thought the poetry was so beautiful; and loved the intimacy of the lovers. Reading the Song of Songs made me desire someone who loved me that much. Now 20+ years later I finally see that someone did love me that much...Jesus. I guess I'm finally seeing that my bridegroom was there all along. Just not who I thought.

I watched this yesterday for the first time and couldn‘t stop crying. On the one hand, because it moved me so much, on the other hand, because I remembered, how I was in Jesus arms and how beautiful it was to be safe, to have a home. I felt so left alone, that I couldn‘t handle the pain anymore. The pain of being left alone so many times, failed so many times, always pushed around but never fully accepted.
Every time I thought I had found someone that would satisfy this yearning, this longing to be wanted, to be loved, to be needed, to be desired not as something you just play with and then after a few months it is said: „Well, we don't need you anymore. You can go.“
Once again I'm pushed away, pushed aside; used, but not wanted, taken, but then thrown away.

Thank you for making this video! Previously a science student, I'm now studying "Songs of Song" in a theology school. I felt so lost in the classes when the lecturer explained the literature features of the poems as I struggled to figure out the plot of the chapters and the whole book. My assessment essay will be due next month but I have no idea where and how to start. I just know I need to put aside my logical thinking and open up my heart to FEEL what the song is all about first.
While watching your video, I'm so touched by the dancers (actresses) and for the first time I have the thought that: Oh! The Shir Hashirim is not just about the Bride's (and Bridgroom's) desire and experience of love. How about the Daughters of Zion / Jerusalem? How about me myself?
And the second thought that came up was that I felt being invited to join those daughters and, from their perspective, to go through each chapter and the whole book again. Thanks once again 😊

The Song of Songs is about Yahuah's love for His people Israel, who are His bride. He was taken away from them when He died for their sins but shall come back to claim His bride for all eternity. King Solomon was asked to write this poem, which is a song to beat all songs because it represents Yahuah's final unity with His bride Israel which is better than any physical marriage on earth. The marriage between man and woman is physical but between Yahua and His people Israel, it is eternal and Spiritual. That is why this poem is called 'Song of Songs'. By the way, Daughter of Jerusalem, are the Children of Israel. Sex is physical and is not to be overly glorified, but marriage to Yahusha Ha Mashiyah is eternal glorification and excludes actual physical sex.

What he's saying is not exactly the way it's supposed to be in the song of Solomon it's just talking about God's love for his bride and his children how we are just precious and beautiful in his eyes the creation we are the creation
