This is a great video. Wish I would have kept my three Bachmann DASH 8-40C and CW Union Pacific units. I didn't think they could be turned into DCC units.Maybe I now go and buy some again and follow your example. You can't program address 3 into a new decoder before programming it. It's the default.
Couple of things that might help. LEDs that work usually work for a long time. If they don’t, super glue is not your friend. I’ve found that rubber cement or Walthers GOO will hold LEDs and wires in place well and allow me to remove the offending wire or LED easily without damage to the locomotive. The second thing is the Decoder Buddy in this or most other installations much more organized and neater. A side benefit is that the lighting in this locomotive could all be soldered to one small connector board so that the shell can be separated from the frame of the locomotive. Awesome thank you! I will try this out on my two Ge-8 40 cw they are both nos I tested them a year ago and was disappointed with the rattling baseball card on bicycle spokes sound seems they all sound like that? lovely layout and and awesome looking sounding Spectrums! cheers from Salt Lake City!
GE only used one type from the 1960's U-boat series until the DASH 9 series and that was the FDL-16. I thought those were the electrical MU hoses for lashing up locomotives? The air hose hangs down by the coupler. Did I miss something?
Hi I watched your vid as I have exactly that chassis, however you were not clear on the truck section with bending the spring and solder, Did you just bend it straight up or actually toward the truck body so as there was no chance of frame contact, and did you insulate the frame in that area also.
@@SleeTheSloth Thanks for reply so i bent the tabs up and with a dab of super glue tacked em to the truck, i think i may insulate the frame there too its so close not sure how to share a pic
@@uniteddrones7626 Yes. You can get blinking LED. I get 12 Volt diodes off EvilBay. They are normal LED's but have a resistor pre solder to them so they can take 12 volts. They come in various sizes.
Hi, why don´t you use sugar cube speakers? They are really small, they have a good sound and you don´t need to trim anything in the loco. I have four of them, two sound equiped and also with ditch lights working, and the sound is fenomenal. Try them, and please let me know. I am also an official repair shop from Fleischmann/Roco, and even in thos brands I use "sugar cube speakers". You also have them in the ZIMO site.
Yes it fits! Mine are with sugar cube speakers! The only thing you have is to choose the right dimensions for them. With two installed, you really achieved another sound quality... believe me! But please pay atention: I´m not saying that speakers you used are bad, no!! But try the sugar cube and then let me know. Regards from Portugal.
Alvaro Sousa Linha do Norte - Modelismo Ferroviario I was using what I had on hand for the project. I did not whant to sink tones $$$ in to them as they would soon be going up for sale.
Thanks, I used your technique on a Spectrum GP30. Thanks for the video.
Very good review. I'm expressed with your expertise on modeling.
Thank you for you're kind words.
Excellent video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m going to try installing DCC in a Spectrum GP30 I recently bought.
This is perfect, I have the same scenario. Nice tip on the leds!
Really valuable information in this video. I have a project with the same bachmann coming up. I'm waiting for my decoder. Thanks
Thank you for doing this, i have a few of these locos and wanted to know if this could be done. Now i know and im on it. Great video!
Thank you for making this video. This helped me out big time. Thanks again. :-)

Not sure as to what you mean. This is a dash 8.
Just for sale : Spectrum Ge dash 8-40Cw wide Cab Diesel item No. 86001.
Thank you for the video, i have 3 Bachman f-9 locomotives in n-scale that i want to convert to dcc, could not find out how to do it, this should work

I believe I bent the copper pick up straight up and soldered the wire to the top of it. I do not think I insulated the frame near the truck.

Hi there! Just saw this and I'm about to do the same thing.. How did the red LEDs blink?? They should have stayed on like the white???
I use " blinking red " LED's for my caboose's. Got one mixed up. Quick fix. :)
SleeTheSloth are you saying the diode blinks itself, like just pure voltage and it blinks? I like using those for the caboose
Ahh yes I see lol lol oops 🤣

Where do u get the LEDs
mbta railfann i get my LED'd from EBay.
you can find 12 volt LEDs with resistors already wired in them on eBay
Does this work woth c44
I'm sorry, I have only installed DCC and sound in Ahearn and Atlases c44s. The newer spectrums are closer to the new Athearn frames.
What is the intro song name?
legend
of the rails. It should be in the credits.

look me up if you need parts! I have 2 I will be making BB40-8s out of....I have no need for the underframes.
Thanks, I will keep you in mind. :)
Do you still have the underframes yet?
