- Freshman Cael Sanderson is on the way to his first of four NCAA titles. He meets his eventual 2004 Olympic teammate Brad Vering in the semifinals. Both would also win NCAA titles the following year.

@@yoursblameless8394 Vering won both matches, which is a sad way for Thompson to go out his senior year. Losing in the blood round to the returning national champ, when he himself was the returning runner up.
