    Billy Corgan put himself into Siamese Dream to an obsessive degree... the songwriting, the 50 guitar overdubs on each track, it created a wall of sound. But the foundation of that wall absolutely was Chambelin, to the same degree that Bonzo was for Zep, he's that important - without him Billy's vision wouldn't have been possible, because he was part of that vision, so much so that the songwriting probably revolved around what a great weapon this guy is/was.

    • @RRTNZ
      @RRTNZ Před 3 lety +9

      Yeah, on the SD album Corgan plays all the instrument parts except drums, for obvious reasons. People rave, and rightly so, about SP's guitar sound bit videos like this show how big a part of their overall sound was Chamberlin on drums.

      My recollection of this isn't from anything I read but in a TV interview at the time of release where he said something like 60-70 tracks on the more dense parts for layering. On wikipedia there is a quote from Butch Vig saying they used up 100. Doubtful anyone knew exactly as I believe this was done in analog which means there would be a lot of mixing down, so yes, higher numbers are likely an exaggeration and a quote from Billy a few years removed from the process probably would be the most accurate.

    • @ArtbyKurtisEdwards
      @ArtbyKurtisEdwards Před 2 lety +1

      @@brandall101 Pretty sure there is a hefty section at the beginning of the tablature for SD where Billy talks about this, too. I learned guitar from that tablature book. Regardless of the exact amount, it was Metallica-level shiz. Quite impressive.

    That intro is pure jazz. Jimmy plays these loose but extremely technical, soulful, kind of aggressive jazz chops and it’s so perfect. But that godly snare sound…him and Dave Grohl inject so much of their personality into the kit. I prefer Jimmy’s style to be honest. Seriously underrated.

    One of the most distinctive signature styles you'll find, chops for days, amazing snare wrk and tone. I've copped everything within my ability from him. My uni drum instructor (a jazzer) wasn't interested/impressed by anything I'd bring in,... until I brought in Tristessa. I dig Stuart Copeland but Jimmy Chamberlain will always be my favorite drummer, just hearing him makes me want to practice.

      Tristessa is an absolute masterpiece. I can actually SEE in my mind when only listening to it, when he plays that song. It's hard to explain, but when that first snare roll happens with the rimshots it looks like a little angry tornado spinning around the snare and then evaporating into the rest of the music.

    I know nothing in the technical sense about drumming, but Jimmy is literally the first and only dummer in a band to whom I truly enjoyed listening. He adds so many extra layers and undertones to an already enormous sounding band. While certainly competent, most drummers I’ve heard could never add anything to or complement the Pumpkins’ music. Jimmy’s chops are so lively and full-bodied and timbre-rich that the drums stand out as a primary instrument rather than just a platform for the band to ride upon. When I’ve heard SP with another drummer, things sound ordinary, pedestrian. With Jimmy, there’s so much energy that it’s like hearing two extraordinary drummers propelling SP off into a higher orbit. Just outstanding ✌🏼
