Damascus, the capital of Syria, is widely regarded as the oldest capital and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with evidence of human settlement dating back to the 3rd millennium BC.
It has been a major cultural and commercial center for centuries, earning it the nickname "the Pearl of the East."
Prior to the Syrian civil war, Damascus was a popular tourist destination known for its rich history, architecture, and vibrant culture.
    Some key attractions included:
    - The ancient Umayyad Mosque, one of the holiest sites in Islam and an architectural masterpiece.
    - The winding alleys of the old city souqs (markets) like Al-Hamidiyah, offering traditional crafts, spices, and the famous Bakdash ice cream.
    - Historic sites like the Straight Street mentioned in the Bible, the Nairabeen viewpoint, and the Damascene houses/palaces turned into hotels.
However, the civil war has severely impacted tourism. As of 2019, Damascus was ranked the least livable city in the world due to the conflict.
Despite this, the old city remains relatively unscathed and life continued with shops, cafes, and bars open to locals and the visitors a like.
