The Joys of Researching Tanks.

- This actually went up on the WoT Console channel a couple of years ago, but it seems not too many people go there. So, re-posting here. Although this primarily refers to World of Tanks, the problems inherent in research applies to basically any game or even scale modelling.
Since this video was made, the priorities in game design and balance may have changed.
The address for that bookstore, by the way.

My copy of "Can Openers" just arrived yesterday, and I have greatly enjoyed reading it. Thanks for all you have done, and keep up the good work.
rather jealous, that book looked amazing!
Fascinating to see all that goes on behind the scenes! Color me impressed.
Another 40min lecture by the Chieftain?
Awesome.
I'm 4 minutes in and already laughing at the NapkinWaffe, this is gonna be a good one.
what is it?
"wargaming wants you, to buy more bundles"
Lol... but how do u think they pay this research...
By not paying tax and selling overpowered tier 8 premiums...in bundles. =D
Watching these videos while modelling, I find a lot of relatable points. In particular, the contradictory nature or patchiness of sources when recreating things that are hard to find or don't exist any more.
Glad you had the qualifier in there about the operator manuals. don't know about then but in the 90's I was an instructor at Ft Gordon, we had new equipment coming out. We were given copies of the proposed Technical Manual to review, and promptly found all sorts of errors between what the manual said and what existed in the equipment. Dimensions, weights, all sorts of things. We wrote detailed critiques which were promptly ignored ... hope things were better back then.
Really miss new content, but a repost of missed content is definitely better than none.
"Wargaming wants you"
Mom, they've finally lost it.
These are the best Chieftan videos. Love it :D
Intereview was from a couple of years ago, making reference to the book Can Openers, which finally got published last year (2017.) How time flies.
I'm gonna make an unpopular statement, and stress the importance of archived information like effects of mold on 2.5 ton trucks in the Pacific theater for the long term storage and readiness of equipment, like the storing of equipment in Norway or other locations in the event of large scale war. Not interesting or relevant to war gaming, but interesting and relevant to real world.
*n o*
Only highly important and specific factors should be noted. Severe storage failures and the like not obvious things...
Great vid, I'd like to see more up to date things like that.
When you started talking about the napkinwaffe I was just about to comment on the rather dubious historical accuracy of the japanese heavy tanks. But then again you are right, I can't prove you wrong.
Excellent presentation, thanks!
Illuminating and enjoyable. thanks!!
Awesome explanation. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ the presentation. So true.
Thanks Chief, always enjoy listening to you talk, wish I could get a job as a Library technician at the archives , would be able to help out cataloguing their.
"Mild Violence"
Are long talks violent nowadays?
very violent burns made by the chieftain

We need an "Inside the Chieftain's hatch: M4A3 76W HVSS" video.......
Get out ya Weeb
I really think the M4A3 76W HVSS is a wonderful topic: Later version of the upper glacis, Ford GAA engine, T23 turret, 76mm gun M1, Wet ammunition stowage, and Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension. There are so many interesting things that have not been covered yet in this channel. And it could be an excellent comparison to the British Firefly.

Paciat that is not an A3/76 HVSS
Gets to the bit about upcoming WoT changes: "Wow, this is an old video."
Thanks for pointing me out where that bookstore was in the original video. It's a terrible shop for my wallet, but love to visit whenever I'm in Brussels.
ief kaizer was also curious about this - what's the shop name and address?
this lecture is very important because it showa the mechanisms of how WG implementED into the game. I posted and forced it among our Russian community and gave a tranlsated version. one of my fellows Yuri Pasholok accepted it. I wish WG act more like Mr Moran said. I wish Mr Moran beat Murazor endly up. thx
Can you do an inside the hatch at the Perola tank museum in Finland?

Is the Chieftain tank going to be made available to PC players in the US and EU?
Thanks.
My first detail at A/2-1Cav/2AD was to hump the excess 20mm barrels for the M114s to be disposed of. The M114s were already gone and replaced by M151 MUTTS. As a Sheridan crewman, I was depressed.
Flying in UH-1s over many Army bases it was always a surprise to see just what hides amongst the bushes. Anyone going out of Ft. Campbell KY headed out directly over CV Bastogne ever spot those 2 Mopar wing cars? Light blue and a white one if I remember right. Hidden from the road in the middle of the corn field.
I once spent three days at the Bovington archives researching Churchill tanks. Absolutely fascinating, but trying to find specific information was a a bit of a pain.
I was very surprised how little they had on Firefly. I presume most of it is in Kew now.
I can imagine a lot of documents go missing. Especially seeing how much they charge to use the photo copier per page.
The_Cheftain Can you post a link to the picture of the T95 that you describe in: 10:58 Im really curious and cant find it :
yeah me too
hey, I did :)

Karl ? Chaffee racing, now that was tons of fun
Have you shared your notes on each boxes contents with the national archives?
The thing is, Wargaming has introduced the main battle tank 70 in WoT, all information is available, for example, that the tank reaches about 60 kmh with 1500 hp, so really really fast, BUT he only reaches 50 kmh has only 800 hp and reaches the 55 kmh once every 5 battles. In short, all the information was there, but it makes the tank worse even though it is underbalanced, but why...
I've got a for you Nicolas if the devs don't implement tank that they don't have any info on, then what's up with the mercenary tanks? Bdecause I've neve of The Machiche tank
Quick question: Why are some hatches designed so small and tight?
Oh, I subscribed to you specifically and not World of Tanks because Im only interested in your stuff and not patch info and dev blogs and such. Im guessing a lot of other people did the same thing.
Yup, as a scale modeler and engineer I am fascinated by how they were made and how they work, and the details of the interiors and engines.
orbitalair ugh I should get back into making models
At a high level , the accuracy detail of the game is great whilst balancing the fun requirement. It also shows the development of the tank very well. So when they need to buff/Neff a tank, they find evidence.
If I may ask. What is the name of the bookstore you mentioned?
Awesome camouflage on the T-95
Can we get a modern version of this video with up to date priorities on things? 🤔
Have you ever visited any of militarry archives in Balkans?
There are good sources for tanks being produced after the ww2 and some rely amazing stuf about reasoning for creating some specifications.
I have not, no. Besides, I'm sure Bojan will have trawled them...
With your records of what/where's in the archives is that a personal/wargaming thing or is that data that getting passed back to the archivists and other historians?
@The_Chieftain big fan from Texas keep up the hard work!. Also are you, or anyone from wargaming ever going to do an inside the hatch/tank on the su100y?
Not beyond possibility, though I have to say that a return to Kubinka is not in my near future for the next year or two that I know of.
The_Chieftain alright, thanks for the reply, keep up the hard work! Regards.

A video with Chieftain? the longer the better!
Yeah, it is the longer the better.
And it is quite sad that the previous Sherman video, which is clearly the best video about Sherman tank, could not be accessed now.
A inside the chieftains hatch on the t95 would be awesome
Just as i pick up 'Hutchinsons pictorial history of war' 18 volumes for this very reason. The New Ryefield panther with interior with options for 4 variants, doesnt show examples of what theyll look like though..I suppose ill have to blindly follow the instructions or explore the joy of researching tanks....The joy of.....where do i remember that from?
Sounds like T-95 was best tank destroyer in existence, by an extremely large margin. It kemp bush for 27 years and nobody could spot it !
Nicholas, thanks for posting your video, great stuff. I have a few questions:
1. I came across of some of whole bunch of your bootlegged videos in other language of you reviewing WWII fighters like P-51, P-38 and ect. Can you point me in a detection of where you have them. I tried to poke around this channel with "no joy"...
2. I do have interest in WWII aviation as much as in tanks, but for the life of me I can't find CREDIBLE statistics on Causalities and Victories, or perhaps sorties flown of WWII broken down by countries and aircraft type. For Example I know that P-51 shut down around 5000 German aircraft, while for a loss of 3000 P-51, and ect.
It is interesting for me to compare where was more German fighter losses in the Easter front or Western front, in perspective of how many Soviets aircraft losses. The reason is that lately a lots of Russians trying to diminish Allies contribution into defeating Hitler in WWII prior operation Overlord.(I know, its not a novel debate, but never the less very interesting subject). BTW any input from anybody greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
They were only ever released in Russian, for whatever reason. I never saw an original (english) version. I'm not sure I can particularly help you with question 2.
Thank you! Keep 'em coming. I would love to see those videos in English though.
a crying shame that. those videos would be mighty interesting
All I want to know is where do I get that banner!?!?!?
Where was the book store in Belgium? , just asking.
Librairie de l'Escadron
Rue de L'Escadron 1

Does the archive require that people that access the data provide information of what was in the box for future historians to use.
No, it does not require it. However, it is not turned away if you offer it up. I've had a number of people ask me for my notes, which I've forwarded freely.
I suppose that does make it more accurate.
Just chilling on the porch with a cigar watching The Chieftain. Hard life.
T95...that driver knows how to Bush camp like a boss!
Dat Masters of Orion joke.
If it's any consolation, I laughed.
Interesting video as always, but I can't say that it has aged well considering the recent additions to the game.
this is an awesome video, the T-95 found in a bush you mentioned was actually a T-28 no? found in 1974 if i'm not mistaken
DatBoyGuru the t28 and t95 are the same thing. It was renamed after the war
Technically the T28 is a T95 without the extra tracks so it fits flatbed railroad cars to transport it.
@@ADudOverTheFence1 nope. Video games use the different names to differentiate between the different modes but in reality both names refer to the same vehicle.
what's the gun depression made me think of the LT-432
"And then we have scraping the barrel"
Ah yes, tovarisch! You have found the Soviet Sekret Archive of Super Secret, Secret Tank!
Poor Chieftan, that Masters of Orion joke was funny.
Chief, Arnold was a tank driver in the Austrian Army and has purchased the tank he drove. It's reportedly derivable. Arnold!!!!
Of all tank simulators I've played only two:
1) old 1980s "Abrams Tank" (I guess, that was the name), it's pretty much unplayable now, as the speed of the game was tight not to the timer, but to the clock speed of the processor, imagine the difference of speed of 286 processor and modern multicore CPU - when you try to traverse a turret, it spins like a propeller on a helicopter. Thus the only was is to use special software to emulate old PC or throttle your processor several hundreds of times down in speed.
2) T-72 "Balkans on Fire"
Anyway, even there games were sort of arcades, still games, I'm not a big fan or real simulators.
I will say, seeing the comments you made about the Japanese heavies and their armor being "not Maus levels", then thinking about their armor now...its hilarious!
How are yall doing today?? :DD
I wanna see the archive info on the wt auf e100...
“The problem with doing this in public is that it takes away a lot of your latitude”

Has anyone bothered to try and organize and/or file the archives? Like every time they bring somebody a box that has not been checked out in a long time, they respectfully ask you to record subject matter of the items you find? Like you get a new box and as you rummage through it you have a little note card so you can record for the archivist that Box 23A has a post test report for the M3 37mm, the specs for an M1 helmet, a detailed nutrition breakdown for a D-ration chocolate bar and a requisition form from the supply officer of the 4th ID asking for more pencils. Has anyone tried doing anything like that?
Wait? Masters of Orion? When does that video come out.
Would you mind linking that thread? I felt like my 5 minutes of solid laughing just imagining it wasn't enough :D
when will the chieftain do a study on the Pacific amtracks?
I could care less about world of tanks, but I like your content in particular
i had an "encyclopedia of german tanks and armor vehicles" that was published in late 50s early 60s? it was written in english with german titles on the photographs. i bought it late 60s very early 70s but it included Everything the germans built, designed or proposed during the war. i believe there was a proposed Porsche design of a concept T-34 copy.
Not sure about Porsche, but the Daimler-Benz VK 30.02 could be described as such.
thanks for the reply!🤗 it was a very informative book to an early teen fascinated with ww history. ive learn more on this channel than covered in history classes.
I can agree with the fun to a game... World of tanks is more of a fun arcade shooter than full on simulation. Moving over to War Thunder, I learnt that the hard way. In world of tanks, traverse speeds as well as track speeds are all enhanced so you can rush in at speed and play it almost like an FPS. Moving over to realistic battles in War Thunder though and I spent the first several hours of gameplay dying a lot. Rush in in world of tanks and you can often win. Rush in with War Thunder and its likely that you get sniped from over a kilometer away as unlike world of tanks where enemies can be hidden only a hundred or so meters away until they're detected, with war thunder, it's pure line of sight. Doesn't matter if the tank is 3 kilometers away... If there is no intervening terrain, you will be seen.
All that in mind, War thunder is a nice in-between game between the arcade of World of Tanks and the pure simulation of Steel Beasts.
Can someone tell me the name of that book store? I'd love to go there!

Panzer Tiger it is. It’s glorious.
I get this feeling you guys will just casually drop one of the mild steel prototypes of the MBT-70 that will either be German or American depending on the gun you cram on to the damn thing since pretty sure your info raiders already have 100% crunch on that lumpy tank
Darjeeling is epic
I've always noticed The Chieftain makes mention of the Archives. Does he mean the National Archives? Or they have an in-house thing going on, I'd really like access to it and do research on my own.
Yes, the National Archives, mainly in College Park, Md. There is a WG collected archive as well, but I tend not to use it as it’s mainly in languages I don’t speak.
Oh boy. That's a good 10 hour drive from where I'm from. I'm guessing there's no online resources I could rely upon?
