- A customer brought in a Jonsereds 70E chainsaw stating that it hadn't run in a while. After rebuilding the carb it still was lacking power in the cut. I'll show you someones mistake and how to fix it. #smallenginerepair

This was back when they made "meaty" saws! Id love to have that saw!! I had an issue with a backpack blower a while back...the "mechanic" replaced his carb. And on OEM at that...but had the intake gasket upside down...now this guy was supposedly a GREAT 2 stroker..so he brought it to me to fix it...then tried to say his son worked on it...then when the son came in...he said "Daddy did that" 😂 i just said...we all have bad days...but thats a component that im VERY conscious of going back together...GREAT VID Brother!
Once you've seen that problem you always know to look out for it. Thanks for watching!
Great catch. Devil is in the smallest of details. Thanks for sharing the issues and your findings.
Yes details can make a difference!
@@TheGreasyShopRag did I miss how you found the problem , or just experience?
@@steveriggenbach90 I already had my hands on the fuel line, filter and carb. Needed to check the impulse and discovered the wrong gasket. I didn't suspect tank vent because it never pulled fuel after the rebuild. Even a sealed tank would have let it pull enough fuel to at least pop.
@@TheGreasyShopRag yep, experience. Knowing how each system works when proper.
Excellent job finding that. You have learned that if everything else is good, what might still be bad? Good lesson for us!
Reminded me of my Dixie Chopper... replaced head gaskets. The kit came with new intake and exhaust gaskets. Short story is one of the intake gasket had a similar issue; during the manufacturing process a previous gasket didn't move out of the way, so it left an imprint on the next gasket and that imprint caused an air leak. I put the old gasket back in and it ran great, best it had run in a long time. I didn't realize how I got used to the low power until it was back to running normal again! Love your videos, thanks for posting them.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
I love working on older saws... but I don't often get them running well! Good job bringing this one back to life
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Nice to see a old Jonsered saw live on. They were great in thier day. I put lots of hours on a Jonsered 80 and a 90 in the 1980s. Switched to Husqvarna now. Thanks for sharing this with us old guys. ❤👍
Pat from northwest WI
Thanks for watching, Pat.
Lol....still using an 80, 90 and 910. Great running saws all of them here in the PNW.
Love to see a nice old saw getting back to good
Yep, me too.
Really good find on this one!! No telling how many are misdiagnosed with this same gasket problem....love the videos brother..keepem coming..
LATER
Thanks for watching!
Great find, Scott 👍🏼
Thanks for watching!
Great vid, love those old saws
Me too. I wish more of them would come in for repair, but then, finding parts can sometimes be disappointing.
That Saw Sounds Great 😀 Nice Find on The Gasket Issue And Tillitson Carb Refresh I Can Remember Working on Only 1 Jonsered Saw Don’t See Them Around My Area 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Not super common here but I see a few newer ones.
Lots of room around the carburetor to work on it. 👍🏻
The backyard yahoo like me would have a lot of trouble figuring that out.
Great job.
Have a great Sunday. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋
If you know all the possibilities for lack of fuel and start checking them off the list its really not that hard to find. I like to think anything can be fixed if you just use logic, even if you've never worked on it before.
👍🏻👍🏻👋👋
Good old saws! Good work and see you next time!
Thanks for watching!
Once again, great job
Thanks!
Brand new sub Scott, love the content and commentary style of your vids. Great pacing and explanations. Later!
Thanks for supporting the channel!
Another job well done bro!
Thanks!
Great video as always
Thanks for watching!
Nice catch. The gaskets in the tillotson kits can fool a guy in this regard. Not always the right fit.
Yes that seems to have been the case here. Thanks for watching!
Great catch Scott! Too many aftermarket gaskets are just thrown on with no regard for form or function. Happened to me recently on a Honda engine, sucking air. Later!
I wonder how much time was spent chasing down this issue.
Awesome... Nice Jonsereds saw... love old quality made saws... Nice change of pace for you...I bet...
Yes I like the change of pace. Thanks for watching!
Good find, they likely used the gasket that comes in the Tillotson HS kit
You may be right.
I own a two Jonsereds, a 451 and a 910. The CJ7Y NGK removable nut equivalent is the BPM6Y.
Yes, when the parts person doesn't let the stock run out 🙂
Donny Walker always says in his videos to be careful using the gaskets that come with tillotson kits for this exact reason
Donny is a wise man.
Ya 41 on my bench has the same issue ppl just throw whatever they can find on sometimes. I like your video neighbor LATER
Later.
I love the red ones.
As long as they aren't red plastic homelites.
Great saws! That 70e will outlast all of us.
You may be right.
My bucket list, includes finding a pre strato, 2171or 2172 saw with full rap.
Just wasn't very many made.
.
For odd reasons, the handles are not universal between husky and Johnson red. So its a very hard to find handle.
Good luck in your search!
The impulse works of the plastic intake block ,
👍 enjoy your weekend
Thanks. I'm cleaning the garage...and enjoying it.
Every time you hit the throttle I swear you could see the spark jumping to the case. Guess not. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, it was when the filter cover wasn't on, I saw it too. Not sure what else it could be. I don't think he could see it from his angle. Hopefully he'll see what you're talking about and reply. Nice catch on the gasket though, he's one of the best in my opinion.
Go to frame 8:08 and I think you'll see your answer. That did look weird and I think thats what you were referring to.
@@TheGreasyShopRag That's it!!
At 13:36, you can see the spark jumping from the coil wire
@@johnclarke8180 Sorry, I don't see any spark.
Great video! I learned more again! Thank you so much! 🪵
I'm glad the videos are helping.
I just inherited a 70E from my Dad that passed away at the age of 91. It runs on spray but had some very old gas in it. I dumped it out and put in fresh gas but it probably needs a rebuild on the carb. Where is the best place to get a kit, the fuel line and filter, and a new plug? I enjoyed your video and found it very informative. Thanks!!
I always recommend supporting a local dealer when possible. A Husqvarna dealer can help you with the parts. They may want to see the carb to get you the right kit.
@@TheGreasyShopRag Thanks for the advice! I found a saw and mower place near me that I will try. I was hoping to do the work myself if possible.
My 42 special is doing th same thing no fuel in carb after rebuild, the impulse is similar to that tillotson carb.it has it’s original gasket from 94 time to get a new one
Lets hope thats all it needs.
Nice work. I can't believe you had that gasket on hand. You must work at an older dealership with a bunch of NOS parts.
That gasket is part of a universal gasket set we stock from Oregon Parts.
Update: I went to the local saw shop and they knew nothing about Jonsered and gave me the name of another shop that serviced Husqvarna saws. Called them and told them the model I had and they said they couldn't get parts and not even carb rebuild kits. They only replace carbs. So if you have a place where I could order the items in your video, I would be grateful. My carb has TILLOTSON. TRALEE IRELAND cast into the top of it. My saw also does not have the chain brake like the one in your video, but other than that is identical. It also reads JONSERED on the pull start instead of JONSEREDS. Where the 70E sticker should be it has nothing there. Must have been rubbed off. Thanks!
Question for you Mr. Rag......When setting the low idle screw how far off of peak RPM do you set it towards the rich side? I recall hearing 1/4 richer.....but am not sure. So I figured I'd ask the expert....thanks for the great content
If you set it at peak rpm you will general have an off-idle bog. Richen it up just enough for that to go away. If after that adjustment it won't idle without loading up then you need to lean it back out a bit.
This is an old, well-documented issue with Tillotson carb kits. The gasket they supply does not cover the impulse channel. I don't know what that gasket style is supposed to fit, but does not work on the Swedish saws. Husky gasket for the win or cut your own. I first had this issue happen to me in 2009 on a J'red 80. I don't know how long Tillotson had been supplying the wrong manifold to carb gasket for these Swedish saws. Back in the day when the saws were newer, it was never an issue.
Well just think of all the pennies they saved in gasket material by not using all that was needed!
@@TheGreasyShopRag Lol! I always figured those small diamond shaped gaskets would fit some popular MAC configuration...but I never knew for sure.
👍
Thanks for watching!
Where'd you get that yellow funnel fuel draining deal at 35 seconds in? I need one of those!
Google Lisle spill free funnel. Its actually for filling radiators.
Great video Scott thank you. I'm probably going to catch slack for asking such a stupid question but oh well. My question pertains to carbs Walbro is specific to Husqvarna correct? Ok is Zama specific to Stihl, does Stihl own Zama. Sorry. Thank you
Yes stihl owns zama but you can find zama and ruexing carbs on huskys. I'm not sure if ant stihls are running walbro carbs.
I like that endoscope flashlight, where did you buy it?
www.streamlight.com/products/detail/stylus-reach-18
Mine came off a tool truck.
@@TheGreasyShopRag , thank you very much!!🤝
Did you make that carb holder stand or is it something one can buy ? If so where ?
I made it and I'm thinking about offering them for sale.
