I'm 42 this year and I can STILL remember the Howard the Duck song they play at the end. Might have been panned, but I loved it as a kid, duck nips and all. Then again we were watching things like Police Academy and Ghostbusters, so swearing, adult themes and bad behaviour was pretty normal for us.

I gotta put in my two cents, I consider HTD to be a guilty pleasure. Ya there are parts I find creepy and I skip but one thing I really love about this movie is the music. The late John Barry really did a good job with the score, making it sound almost 1940's with the trumpet and the beginning when Howard launches into space and sounds like an epic. John Barry can really bring a not so great movie up a few notches with a great score and I really like Linda Thompson's singing especially the ballad. At a time when some tv and movie actors were cutting albums it's a wonder she didn't make a solo album.

Always learning from professor Minty. Had no idea Lucas was behind this abomination. Landis may have helped, but I think Ralphi Bakshi could've made it a phenomenon, either animated and/or live action. And interesting you mentioned National Lampoon, as in it's early years it tried to promote Wobbles The Goose as it's mascot symbol. Thankfully canned, I couldn't help think watching this review that Lucas was no doubt a fan of the mag, and to make Howard work would be a 'in your face' fusion he could gloat over. Too bad Lucas lost his mojo after THX1138, American Graffiti, and Star Wars. Those one can sense he had a passion for. Everything after was like he was just 'phoning it in'. BTW, I like your accent mate, and one Minty is sufficient. But where's the pyromaniac puppet? That may work for Lucas better I think.

Thanks for the video. I really enjoy your channel.
I just finished watching Howard the Duck for the first time 10 minutes ago. My thoughts? On a technical level it's excellent with great cinematography and some amazing special effects for the time. I was constantly astonished at how detailed and nuanced Howard's facial expressions were considering his 'performance' was produced by a combination of facial animatronics and puppeteering in addition to the live performer wearing the suit. It's quite an amazing achievement when you consider that each of the individual components that constitute any one emotion on his face (eyeball movement, eyelids, beak, brow, head movement etc etc etc) are controlled on set live in front of camera by a team of puppeteers and all of them have to work in unison like musicians in an orchestra to build his expressions. I've seen and worked with a lot of real life performers who can't 'emote' as well as Howard does. His 'performance' not only has precision it has nuance. I can honestly say that there wasn't a single moment where I didn't believe in Howard as a living breathing character in the movie - and this is sans CGI over a decade before Gollum.
As for the rest of the film? It has flaws for sure but it's not at all bad. At 110 minutes it has definite pacing issues and a lot of scenes in the first half are just redundant and can easily be excised. The draggy pace is made worse by Huyck's insistence on belabouring everything. A lot of scenes just go on twice as long as they need to with dull plotting, childish dialogue and embarrassing attempts at humour. Added to that Beverly comes across really bland as a character despite the lovely Thompson's decent performance (let's not even mention her band's music). The 2nd half of the film improves considerably. The plot finally finds some focus and there's a lot of well-staged special-fx action capped off by a fun, rousing giant monster finale.
I feel that the filmmakers simply misjudged the target audience for a film about a talking duck. I understand that they were trying to be (semi)faithful to the edgy, satirical spirit of the comics but had they simply dumped the more 'adult' elements the film would have been family-friendly enough to reach younger viewers.

Hey Minty, for the parts where you do cutscenes of yourself and your other self, you should get a better microphone for these types of scenes. When you're doing VO on the video itself, your mic is great! But then your mic gets awful during every cutscene..

I watched Howard The Duck again for the first time since it was released and it was so bad that I loved it. Believe it or not, the first time I saw it was in theaters on a field trip with my fucking day care. They also took us to see Teen Wolf and Top Gun. My day care. They must have really liked us kids.

I think that was back when parents didn't really pay attention to what children watched. I rewatched some old Felix the cat cartoons and um, they're kinda dark. Also, my parents picked out Watership Down (1978 movie version) for the neice/nephew kids to watch back in the 80s. I think those kids are still scared of rabbits as adults....

I'm 43 and saw this in the theater. I saw it a couple more times on home video shortly afterward. I still distinctly remember the duck tits, the duck condom in the wallet, and I still recall the song at the end of the movie. I'd be interested to see it again to see how much of it rings a bell.

I used to work at a MANN VILLAGE THEATER IN WESTWOOD we were showing HOWARD THE DUCK and the funniest thing is there was a protester ( as one person) holding up the sight that says," HOWARD THE DUCK MUST BE ROASTED." and I thought that was funny 😄 😊

This is a fun 80's movie, that doesn't get enough credit. I can't believe it came out the same year as ALIENS and cost almost twice as much to make. Phil Tippet's stop motion work on the Dark Overlords is awesome!

Cripes, if you would've asked me I would've told you the movie was a huge hit. I saw it at the theater and then watched it dozens of times on VHS. All my friends saw it too. It was better than Three Amigos and that ending credits song is just such a catchy 80's anthem that still rings in my head to this day.

Frankly, I felt that the best thing about the film was that they got the voice right. I remember a letter column in the original comic where a reader asked if Howard had a "duck voice"; to which Gerber replied "What's a duck voice?" I always took that to mean that his voice would sound normal (as opposed to a slurred, silly cartoon voice).

We might get another Howard the duck film after his cameo in guardians of the galaxy 2
Apparently Seth Green as the voice of Howard and Lea Thompson wants to be in it so I'm praying Disney won't mess this up for us marvel fans

I love Howard the Duck comics and the movie. It’s an amazing comedy and they have brought Howard back into the lime light thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy.
It was one of my favorite “cameo” scenes.
I really hope that they actually use him in the ongoing Infinity War, even if it’s a very small part.

I loved this movie as a kid! The design and movement of the H. T. Duck character was fluid and well done, The effects were great (I loved the D.O.O.T. Universe's powers, especially his thrown energy shock ability in the diner) There was an awesome flying scene with an ultralight, there was Lea Thompson
