Castro hates the internet, so Cubans created their own

  • A few years ago some computer gamers based in Havana strung a small web of ethernet cables, from house to house, so they could play video games together. The network has grown quietly and today its called StreetNet: a bootleg internet for Havana with over 10,000 users. It was an innovation forged by necessity in a country where only 5 percent of the citizens have access to the uncensored internet. Watch the why Cuba's internet is stuck in 1995.

    Cuba has some of the worst internet access in the world, with just 5 percent of Cubans able to access the uncensored web.
    Since the communist revolution of 1959, the Castro regime has enforced a strict ban on all forms of information flow that challenge official policy and history. Enforcing such censorship has been relatively easy for an island nation that has a monopoly over all media outlets. But when the internet arrived in the '90s, it complicated matters for the Castro's.
    As Cubans get a taste for the wonder that is the internet, they want more. As internal pressure grows, the Cuban regime will likely continue to find creative ways to offer the internet without losing control of the flow of information. The opening of Cuba to foreign investment and travel will only speed up the process.

    It's so bizarre for me to watch this because I've read Castros biography and all the struggle and war they fought to gain freedom seems pointless if the country is like this. The people seem like they want to revolt but they feel morally obliged to wait a little longer because of the initial pure motive that Fidel had. Pretty peculiar

    • @Cubannerd
      @Cubannerd Před 7 lety +24

      The Castros didn't do much themselves. Even if they were not in the picture the Revolution was inevitable. They just started it in the East side of the country but many revolutionary movements were fighting the dictatorship before them. The Castros only took advantage of the situation and placed themselves as the face of the Revolution to have more power over the people. They back stabbed many of the people that helped them.

    The reality: The Internet in Cuba is severely limited due to the United States embargo against Cuba. THE UnITED STATES REFUSES TO ALLOW an undersea cable to pass 100 miles from Cuba to Florida. Instead, Cuba's Internet connection is via the ALBA-1 cable to Venezuela, which has had technical problems limiting its speed.

    I used to work at an airline before the pandemic. Whenever we would fly to Cuba to stay overnight, the hotel we stayed at would give us all a little paper card with a very long username and an equally long password, which you had to enter every time you connected to the internet. It worked for 24 hours, but only the actual time you’d spend online was logged in. When it was time to leave most of the flight crews would give them to the drivers that took us to the airport, and they would be very thankful. If we forgot about them, they would go out of their way to ask us for them, if we still had them.

      Ethan You know there are different governments (coservative, liberal, etc) and circumstances play a role in this, right? The FCC became this way BECAUSE of 1)the former government appointing Ajit Pie and 2) the inaction of the new government on the topic of the internet didn't help the situation (all of this is how it got out of control), therefore the current government must fix the blunder that has arisen from the series of stupidity (since it has time to do so), as per the will of the people. That's how democracies work. So no, I'm not stupid, but you most likely are for not assuming this.

    My Latino people are savvy they make it happen no matter what I wonder if it's better to live in a world that you know you are being controlled opposed to a world where you are being controlled but makes you believe you are not it's one thing to be in a cell and see the bars and physically touch them then to be in a cell and not realize you are in one...

      Coño, qué poético. Claro que prefiero comprar lo que a mi me de la gana en el mercado y tener internet ilimitado que trabajé para tener. Y te voy a decir un secreto, toda esa información que se recopila de ti, tú voluntariamente aceptas que sea recopilada cuando aceptas los términos y condiciones de las apps que instalas en tus dispositivos.

    It’s amazing to hear the lady at the end say that the flash drive will get a monument when you will be able to speak your mind freely, it’s amazing that the flash drive will overlap Castro if it came to happen. Crazy to see how a well intentioned individual can become so consumed with power that he forgets he was trying to free his people, not enslave them. This is why we have so many hurdles for any law to pass. It’s important that no one man has complete power over everything the country offers. You have people to keep them in check. It may not be perfect but it’s about as good as it can get... I mean, 1 hour of internet?! I would have used 10% of that hour just in this video alone! Sometimes I need stuff like this to put things in perspective.

    Cuba doesn't hate internet. The US refuses to give Cuba access to the sumarine internet cable, which would immensely improve the internet situation. There is only so much they can do without a proper way to connect.
