  • Dictionaries define a humanitarian as someone who works to better humanity. In this talk, Erin challenges this mainstream definition and argues that it is much more than that. Through her own journey, she shares a few key points that can either make or break one’s experience as a humanitarian.
A doctor, a humanitarian, an explorer, Erin Kilborn is a Glasgow-trained physician working both on the front lines of the NHS in Scotland and in with organisations such as MSF (Doctors without Borders) as an expedition doctor in environments such as the jungles of Borneo, post-earthquake Haiti, the capital of the war-torn Central African Republic or the Peruvian Amazon.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The way how I re-define humanitarian is doing things that are considered human, or what we basically do as human beings. For example, sometimes we imagine of saving everyone, but you cannot always save everyone by imagining things that would not come true. The only best way we do as humans is basically a charity, or donations by helping a lot of people from different countries, and backgrounds. But no matter what, we are human we need to do things that are considered human. Like opening the door for someone else, helping someone who puts the grocery items in the bag. That's basic that's okay.
From personal experience, I realize that not many people are absolutely good at helping other human beings. While other human beings do not have the problem with helping because they don't mind helping those who are having difficulty with doing homework, trying to study for a subject, and etcetera. Actually I hate getting tutoring because of my mental health and how I truly feel which makes me sad, truly anxious, and I do not like making a lot of eye contact. Because eye contact can show how we behave especially when it comes down to non-verbal communication.
Getting help from someone actually help benefits them. Unless mental health and the way how I truly feel about getting academic help is not for me, or my mental health is getting in the way. A lot of people should be aware that depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide have gotten the attention of millions of people. Because many people suffer from depression, anxiety, or something darker than that. I do not feel like getting help is not for me, and I do sometimes help others, especially those around me, but I do not as often. I rather do things that truly makes me happy, smile, and laugh, and I like doing work that requires less effort. Unless if it is difficult the most important is knowing how to do it step by step by just working it out slowly.
Explaining into my own words like words that has every meaning is like you try to put them into your own words. Learn how to cope with yourself like painting it does not have to be perfect, or look aesthetically pleasing.

Just to chip in, I think what Gandhi meant by "whatever you do will be insignificant" is coming at it from a more existential point of view, and the "but it is very important that you do it" is meant to summarize this whole speech, so she's actually agreeing with him.
