Gearbox has like one successful franchise among a 20 year stretch of scandals and failures, and the marketing and timing of this specific game was not something that a smart person would have gone with. Just be smarter than a plank of wood, and you'll be a better dev than Gearbox ever was. Grats.

Anyone who actually played both games knew how different they really were.
They were both hero shooters with some similar character designs. The experience of playing both games was very different. It was neat that Battleborn actually had a campaign. Still bummed OW couldn’t even pull that off after 7 years and a sequel. I’ll be honest I enjoyed both.

Y'know when the beta came out I played I tried it out and I thought it was fun so I bought it. It seemed pretty interesting as it had campaign and multiplayer and different classes but the day it came out there were only 3 people queuing up for multiplayer for the next couple of days it was just the same couple of people queuing, so then I went into steam and changed the region to include Asia as well and I only got 6 people I spent more than an hour trying to get into a game. The lobby needs 8 players to start the game :(
the games staff could have had the decency to play with you guys for the first couple weeks atleast but even they didnt want to play the game.

WOaH Battleborn deserved better, the only and biggest miatake that gearbox did was launching it almost at the same time as Overwatch
They launched before Overwatch did, but Blizzard just outplayed them, so to speak. They put the open beta for the game right at the same time as Battleborn's release, to lure over any potential players before they got there.

I don't think so, I think Overwatch is just a better game judging from the reviews from people who *did* play both games. I actually played them both as well, and Battleborn didn't even come close to Overwatch. That's not to say it was a necessarily bad game, but it was very mediocre and Overwatch was so good it won game of the year, it just didn't stand a chance. If it hadn't released around the time Overwatch did it would have done better, but it just wasn't good enough to compete regardless of release dates and would have died over time anyway.
I come back to this video every few years and cry

If they hadn't released it right beside overwatch it probably would have done fine. But instead the decided to commit suicide by trying to go against blizzard.
Had they done it like paladins and make it, say, f2p, they probably could have been around for longer. Blizzard can turn any shitty game into a pot of gold (hearthstone), so you can't compete with a Blizzard game by making a similar game and sell it for a similar price.

The studio that produced the borderlands games went under, that's why borderlands the pre sequel never got any DLC
I like to imagine that borderlands the pre sequel is a scrapped idea for borderlands' story that they turn down and instead they make a different story for borderlands 1 and after succeeding in the process and eventually releasing borderlands 2 and its DLCs, they felt bliss and empty so they decided to get the ditched story running back for the pre sequel

It was a genuinely good game, despite all the competition. It’s frustrating that people constantly compared it to Overwatch when in reality it was a vastly different take on the team shooter formula. It had great potential, but unfortunately the market was bloated with these games, and Randy Pitchford being as stupid as he is wasn’t as good a marketing genius as he thinks.
Paladins was way closer to Overwatch and it still thrives today, and Overwatch has only become more and more abysmal in quality. I wish more people had given it a chance.
Finally, someone here who speaks some fucking wisdom.
Overwatch was just a Team Fortress 2 clone anyways. Crowbcat should be old enough to know that, not sure why I'm defending Gearbox on this because I have boycotted them for 20 years but I call it as I see it lol

One of the biggest problems that Battleborn had is that 2k can't into effective advertising.
Of the few ads they put, none of them gave you any idea what the game even was. This is why people are saying Battleborn is an Overwatch clone, when in reality the two games are nothing alike.
If they had made more effective advertising efforts, I think the game could have been a moderate success with a small, but dedicated playerbase. Now it's a ghost town, and it sucks, because there's a good game to found in Battleborn.
