There's a lot of great guitar players. Some are sloppy players like Steve Clark. Others are right down the middle. Then there's the guys I admire the most. The guys like Phil. The technicians. I've watched every Def Leppard documentary I could find, and they talk about the duality of the guitars. It's not a lead and rhythm. It's two melodic lead guitars. Not only that, they explain Steve was a sloppy player. Held his guitar too low. Still a great player and writer. Phil being on the constant hunt to be that well oiled, perfectly running, efficient machine. So they weren't just melodic, they complimented each other by not playing the same way. Guys like Phil, Joe Satriani, Gary Hoey, Eric Johnson, Marty Friedman, John Petrucci, (insert G3 guitarist here). They are great to listen to, but also great to watch. Eddie Van Halen often played both rolls. The idgaf garage rocker, to some of the most moving guitar works ever written.
Those 20 years certainly flew by. Still love "Adrenalize." I think "Stand Up" is a hidden Def Leppard gem. And "White Lightning" is fantastic. Thanks, Phil.
@Greg Smith Yes!!! Neither Phil Collen nor Def Leppard get enough credit for the excellent Adrenalize album. Not even the band seem to like it that much. Recorded too close to Steve's death, I think.
I wish phil could read this, but man you were literally the first band I was ever introduced to when I was just a little kid. Though I play nothing like you, you wouldn't believe the impact you have had and the inspiration you've given to me. I'm glad you're still crushing on stage and I hope you live forever! Much love, even though you'll never read this.
@@agent19kentuckypotbaron15 Phil, I picked up a guitar 20 years ago thanks to you, Pete and Steve. Thanks so much for the inspiration and music. I hope this message finds you well. And once again, thanks for inspiring me. You're a class person. Rock on mate. Cheers. X
Write a letter and send it to manager. If it's a kind letter and not the scary, stalkery kind of letter (which goes to law enforcement), they'll pass it along.
Def Leppard, if you monitor your CZcams at all, please consider playing this at some point soon. The band is at the point where you are playing some of the more obscure older stuff. This is one of my favorite songs ever done, and I think it's Phil's best solo ever. And it's a great memorial to Steve. The Pinnacle of it, would be if Phil played either the old professional series, or, one of Steve's old guitars.
It was a haunting, brooding song and an excellent tribute to an awesome guitar God who we lost far too soon. The words should act as a warning as well.
I was literally driving down the street with this full blast watching my neighbor's look at me as I drove by. I had to come listen to this again. Possibly the coolest video on CZcams. RIP Steve Clark
When I got the Adrenalize album in high school we were all big fans. I got the cassette lol.. and went out driving to listen to it. Let’s get Rocked was already being pushed as the big single. When I got to this song I was driving though stark semi-desert, with the sun low and bright but dark storm clouds around the horizon. The song blew me away and became my favourite instantly. When I was bad in school the next week, some friends were discussing the album and I finally said: “I kind of like White Lightning”, not expecting much reaction, since it’s a low key song and I had listened to it in the perfect environments, BUT all my friends said instantly “YES!”. VERY underrated song. The fact that it’s about Steve’s deterioration just made it all the more poignant.
This is beautiful. It must have been so hard for Phil to play this for us. And the strings he played parts of the Solo on have never been changed....awe😢. That says alot for how much he cherishes and misses his bff Steve. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS VIDEO WITH US PHIL!😙💙
Adrenalize was my first DL album. In my opinion this was clearly the best track on that record and one of their best period. Fittingly adventurous tribute to a very unique guitarist.
So hard to believe it's been 20 years!! White Lightning will always be one of my favorite songs. It came along at just the right time!! Thank you Def Leppard!!
Effortless! This solo and song has always been close to my heart. Wish they'd still play it on tour! Seeing them next week on tour and I hope Phil is back from his "family emergency" and all is well! Love Def Lep!!
I always hear people saying he's not the greatest guitarist, but you can tell he doesn't try to be. He has his own unique style and sounds like no one else. Instead he focuses on the songs. What he just played was incredibly badass. The greatest guitar player in the world couldn't come up with something that cool.
I think he is fucking amazing at solos. People nowadays think that playing up and down scales really fast and who can do arpeggios the fastest is what makes the best guitarist. Honestly careful phrasing and artful playing is so much harder than just shredding.
I didn’t become a fan of the band until much later. Only knowing a little more about the history of Steve Clark, I first heard this song. Without knowing the background I immediately thought “man! This sounds so much like Steve Clark’s story!” And then I came across the posted interviews on CZcams that helped me realize how much I hit the nail on the head. This song is absolutely a hard rock masterpiece, and not just because of the subject matter either.
I always thought Phil Collen was awfully underrated. Very melodic, very emotional, killer tone. Those melodies behind the bridge and chorus of "Love Bites" are some of the best guitar sounds I've ever heard.
Adrenalize...the album that made me pick up the guitar in the first place. Now I play it for a living and its all because of you Phil. Thank You for being my inspiration which you continue to be. Much love, Tony. Newcastle England.
Adrenalized was the first cd I ever owned. I still have it. I was 12 when I got it in 1992. You guys have been my favorite band ever since. White lightning is an amazing song. Keep rocking and the hits coming. Your the best.
'Adrenalize' is my favourite Def Leppard Album! How I wish the band released a Singles box set. All the 6 singles ('Let's Get Rocked', 'Make Love Like A Man', 'Have You Ever Needed A Someone So Bad', 'Stand Up Kick Love Into Motion', 'Heaven Is' and 'Tonight') with all the B-sides included. There're several that didn't make into that "Deluxe" edition. Also I'd love to have that full Germany 1992 concert on CD. I can even remember MTV broadcasting the show. Long live 'Adrenalize' and Def Leppard!
I saw these guys last night at carolina rebellion..they were great..the energy and just to see and feel how much they enjoyed playing music..just great..love you guys and the families that support them..as well as the fans!! :D~
Rahadimas Samiaji “steve who?” Are you crazy😂? Steve Clark of course. This song is about Steve. He’s the best guitarist the band ever had. He died back in 91.
Best DL solo and it ain't even close and one of my favorite songs of all time. Very cool dedication to Steve. Phil is and always has been one of the most musical solo writers on the planet. Steve and Phil were PHENOMENAL as a team! Steve might be one of the best song writers in rock music. RIP Steve Clarke
Now it’s been 30 + years. I remember the days when this album came out… I remember the girl dated…her Def Leppard mania friend who was so happy to listen to the new album before getting drafted to the military. I remember the Mazda 626 I used to drive. Ah the old memories.
Such a good song, I swear Adrenalize is one of the few albums where damn near every song should've been a hit! Where the "fillers" were worth listening to as well!
What I loved about their music was their solos went on and on for miles and changed keys and all that. I wish they'd bring that style of songwriting back.
Saw them twice on that tour. Birminham NEC and the Sheffield Don Valley Stadium gig. While the in the round set up in the NEC was amazing to witness, I remember a much more energetic vibe with them in Sheffield. Both very memorable gigs!
The beginning of that solo with the repeat part is so bitching good. You knocked it out of the park with that solo. One of my favorites and to write that for your mate I know he’s so proud of you 👍🏼👊🏼✌🏼
That song and God's Of War I think is the best guitar driven technically Phil played up to now in a Def Leppard records. The feel of the guitar is awesome!
Phil collen, dude you have been my biggest guitar idol. White lightning is my #1 Def Lep tune. One day im gunna record a rendition on fo the tune as I resonate with the tune. Ive see ya guys twice live in Indianapolis, each time was the best live experience of my life lol. Some day I wanna jam with you man when im on tour, till then brother, keep rockin and once this covid has run its course me and Joni will see ya guys out there! Much love from your friend and fan-shadd.
People ref to Steve Lukather for melody but Phil is also in the league of creating amazing Melodies that will stand the test of time and be instantly remembered.
Thank you Phil..enjoyed watching you play...still able to capture the sound and tone..with out a big amp..amazing..love your playing style...thank you again for sharing.
20 years, time has flown by so fast. I was working overseas, my brother sent the CD in the mail and I was never disappointed. Always wondered why there was no video for that song.
This song needs to be brought back in the setlist.
Yes it definitely does
"something like that" he said, that was spot on and he knew it, lol.... Quality
paul scott, it's just a habit he has of saying that. He works very hard but he's like Steve was, very humble... very real.
That just blew me away. Mastercraft. How many hours has he played to get that good?

Stand up is a master piece!
Yes
"Stand Up" is not a ''hidden gem''... it's a great song that every Leopard fan knows and loves...Hidden, I don't think so.
I still think it's one of his best solo's.
R.I.P. Steve. You are truly loved and truly truly missed!!
This was a fitting solo from a great guitarist, paying tribute to a late great guitarist.
Musically, I think Adrenalize is Phil's best work.
It was mostly all him.
Keira but there was still songs that Steve helped write it was just Phil playing Steve's parts
@Greg Smith Yes!!! Neither Phil Collen nor Def Leppard get enough credit for the excellent Adrenalize album. Not even the band seem to like it that much. Recorded too close to Steve's death, I think.
Greg Smith same
Have you heard Steve Clark? Phil was awesome but Steve understood the guitar more, in my opinion at least
I wish phil could read this, but man you were literally the first band I was ever introduced to when I was just a little kid. Absolutely awesome riffs phil, R.I.P. Steve, we hold close in our hearts “Forever & Always”
What a great solo that is . Phil is Such an underrated guitarist .
I agree so many people say his playing and shredding is crap even thought it isn’t he’s my favorite player too and I love him so much

Man the intro to that song is haunting and eerie... but beautiful at the same time. Always loved Phil's playing.
Phil is an icon in rock guitar history. I miss this era in music, both the songs and the sound. His contribution is legendary.
I love it when these kick ass guitarists totally crush a solo and end with “or something like that” 🤣
I think this is kind of what makes them a guitar hero? lol
"White Lightning" is one of my favorite Def Leppard songs for sure because it's a beautiful tribute to Steve!
The master art of guitar notes and riffs. Mr. Phil Collen.
This is beautiful. It must have been so hard for Phil to play this for us. And the strings he played parts of the Solo on have never been changed....awe😢.

Wish you guys would play white lighting on tour Phil, my favourite Def Leppard song of all time - we'll hopefully see you in Melbourne again soon!
They played it in Austin today
+randomdude12370 so jealous!
LMAO! No they did not! That song hasn't been played since 92! Maybe 93
It's possible you're mistaking it for another song though.... The last 2 or 3 tours including the 2016 tour is STILL the hits tour.....
I just looked it up on setlist.fm, White Lightning was NOT played in Austin........
Adrenalize introduced me to rock music when it was still brand new. I owe a lot to that album.
Clarke and Collen = master's of riffs and solos.
my god what an impressive talent he has!!!
DEF LEPPARD ARE SO AMAZING AND SO TALENTED,, I BELIEVE PEOPLE DON'T KNOW HOW GOOD THEY REALLY ARE ❤❤❤❤🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

Chills all over . Wicked Solo Mr.Phil
Beautifully done phil what an awesome song too you should be proud to have ever came up with the guitar work.
Phil does some great stuff and loves his whammy bar , the sound he gets on his jacksons is a joy ... concert onto with Women is a great example
The only thing in this solo I can do is change the pickup selector switch. Phil is the man!!!
