  • @Adam-ui3yn
    @Adam-ui3yn Před měsícem

I've recently started kickboxing and noticed there are other things it demands.
    1. Strength through a wide range of mobility. Most sports require motion in all directions, kicking adds an extra dimension because now your legs are operating at or above your waist too.
    2. Unreal conditioning. Twisting, jumping, punches, elbows, kicks, sustained for a long time. It demands you're always focused. Unlike other sports if you let your guard down for a second you don't just lose a point, you will feel a world of pain.
    3. Balance and agility. I'm usually pretty good at most sports I try so I was surprised at the discrepancy between how easy fighters make it look vs how hard it is to perform correctly. There are so many moving parts you need to be mindful of. Pivot the foot and hips, stay on the ball of your foot, distance management, protect your face, and combos that emphasize working into a flow so you keep your momentum.
    4. Resilience. This is a painful sport, I took my first leg kick and I'll never underestimate their effectiveness again. Building your body to take that damage and your mind to focus through it makes you tough in ways that I think translate to all areas of life.
I've only been to 5 classes now but I absolutely love it. I'm not even discouraged how poorly I can kick it's actually exciting because it means I'm going to improve quickly.

i was informed i had a naturally disadvantaged build for kickboxing.
my legs, arms, and subsequent reach are pretty much evenly proportionate with my height, however my thighs and calves have been bulked to the max from all the rugby, and basketball i played as a kid.
my back, traps and shoulders are disproportionately large compared to my chest and core muscles, and although i find i can generate a lot of power from almost all angles i test, i do find it incredibly difficult to work on speed and consistency because my hips and torso just don't have enough strength to move my legs in a smooth, technical, and quick fashion.
i find myself resorting to simple, effective combinations that i can defend and counter from as well.
but i would really love to learn spin kicks, jumping kicks, flying knees etc.
love my basics but am struggling to work on the muslces needed for the higher tier kickboxing/muay thai/TKD combinations. any help?

You can develop all these qualities and probably even better from getting to a high level in breaking, so I doubt it's all that unique. However, at the end of the day, if you have athleticism that you can depend on in a life or death situation, then it's a win in my book.

At a certian level its all about frames. You can eat your way up to heavyweight but if you are a middle weight frame its pretty much selecting survival difficulty. Its more so about bones than muscle, which is why most guys do the exact opposite, they get as skinny as they can to have reach advantage per their weight class. Like tommy hearns making 145lbs and being a tall skeletal figure, sure he couldve been more muscular and fought at 175 but he was so OP at 145 cause his frame was just huge.
Only a rare few have gained weight above their natural class such as holyfield who came up with muscle, james toney who just ate his way up, and even roy jones jr who only did it for one fight

From my experience, striking sports in general make you extremely skinny but ripped and a lot stronger than they look. The endurance needed to fight really eats away a lot of muscle and fat. They look like skin, small defined muscles, and bones. So you'll see guys shrink and have small tight defined muscles, which is perfect, because I've noticed that the skinnier the guy gets the more UNGODLY the speed/reflexes they have and they can keep that speed throughout a long fight. What people don't talk about is just how tight and hard those little muscles are, and how disproportionately strong they are compared to their size. Those small super defined muscles all over their bodies are hard as a rock, and they are MUCH MUCH stronger than they look. As far as which muscles are the strongest and most pronounced on an elite striker are all the core muscles, the front and rear delts, and the lats. Which makes perfect sense as the core is where power is generated, the delts for extending and retracting the arms, and the lats to anchor the delts to the core. You'll generally see strikers with stick figure legs, small arms, skinny but muscular traps/necks, super defined abs, thick delts, and thick lats. The limbs staying small/lacking mass(but rock hard) and the core being super strong gives them ungodly speed in their arms and the ability to almost "whip" their strikes due to the difference in mass. The lats anchor the core to the delts and transfer the most power to the delts. The huge delts are like super strong springs. So, an ideal striker in my mind is tall, lanky, super skinny small legs, skinny small defined arms, defined but not thick traps/neck, super defined abs, protruding delts, and disproportionately huge thick lats. The number one tell tale sign for an elite striker in my mind is when you can actually notice the rear delts and lats popping out of their back. That's a red flag for knock out power to me. Even in kickboxing, the legs are a little bit thicker, but still skinny, small, well defined, and rock hard for the same "whip" reason I explained above for the arms. Wrestlers on the contrary tend to be just a little bit shorter but thicker everywhere. Their backs, lats, core, traps, glutes, and quads are a LOT thicker than strikers which gives them ungodly strength compared to speed. Their arms don't necessarily have to be huge because wrestlers power also comes from their core. All their muscles are rock hard as well, but they actually look like they should be rock hard. A tell tale sign of an elite wrestler to me are HUGE traps, and super WIDE lats. Which makes sense because wrestlers use a lot of strong pulling movements in different directions in the neck area. So, strong traps help defend their posture and anchor to their lats which are super strong pulling muscles that can generate a lot of power in different directions. These are my opinions.

As a gym rat who also started muay thai:
    - abs are dictated more by the low bf combat sports (usually) require
    - shoulders yes, definitely
    - back: not much of a v-shape, you can grapple to obtain that
    - legs: most important ones that you didn't mention Gabriel! Kb creates very (specifically) strong and conditioned legs, including the calves!
