No Binding Potholder Trick!! Easy DIY Sewing

  • Hello Shiny Crafty People and welcome back to the channel!
    Today I’m using the technique I first described in my placemat video ( • Store-Bought Quilt Hac... ) to create a potholder that looks like it has binding but there’s no messy binding required! And the technique even lets you add a fun decorative second border to highlight the main fabric.
    I made sure to use cotton batting because polyester batting would too easily melt. Don’t, don’t, don’t ever use a premade quilt for this!
    Here’s the link where I got my cotton batting: amzn.to/3wMEnfF
    I doubled up the batting but you could easily triple it to make it even more protective.
    For this you’ll need a 10” piece of your back and border fabric. Four 9” strips of accent fabric. The strips should be however wide you want. But I suggest between 1.5” and 2.5”. And one 8” piece of your main center fabric. All fabrics should be cotton so they don’t melt when you use this for something hot.
    If you like the portable travel iron I used here, check out the link here: amzn.to/3Ist7rg
    And here’s a link for the spray adhesive I use: amzn.to/3TtyRr9
    Don’t be fooled by cheaper cans of this on Amazon. Check the ounces and you’ll see that saving $6 isn’t a bargain when it’s only half the size.
    I love the Odif 505 adhesive as it appears to be less toxic than the stuff we used to use. I still recommend you spray it in a well-ventilated area.

    I've made so many potholdes using the backing for binding, turning inside out, real binding and more yet still never thought of sewing binding this way. It's a little more work then using the back for binding but this way adds that touch of color and flair. Thanks

    Neat idea. I made 🦋 fabric for my kitchen window. Now I 🤔 I'll use some of the leftover for matching potholders, and the towel thingy you showed us. 👍🏻❤

    That is pretty. I might attempt to make a pot holder with this technique but I would quilt it so when I wash it the batting won't wad up. Nice job.❤😊

      I do not Quilt them. But I bet you could change it up and quilt them. Go to CZcams type in Self Binding Baby Quilt. Look for the one that says Missouri Star with Jenny Doan. There is 2 ways to make them But the one with the Blue background is the easiest one. I make mine with Flannel. The inside piece I do 36 x 36 the back that I fold over I do 43x43 and hem the big piece 1/2 all around it. I do not want it to fray when it is washed. Have fun if you decide to make one,

    So ... on this last sewing rendition ive found some yardage store items to be on the expensive side for just sewing and every day items. Batting was one such item when i wentnto make some imexpensive hot pads in the same fabric as the table cloth. At that time, i went from the yardage store to the the thrift store down the road and found a wide striped, thick, pool side, 100% cotton, terry cloth bath sheet for $1.50; it wasnt even on any type of clearance. I am not a pieced fabric quilter and since then ive been using thrift store towels as the "wadding" (as the Britsh sewist call it) over purchased "batting".

    1) Great fabric choice! I've seen other videos on non-binding edge techniques and normally would have skipped this one, but the fish pattern lured (no pun intended) me in. I'm glad that I did, as your technique is different from the other videos I watched. 2) I have never seen someone hold a ruler on edge like that while cutting. I immediately had to pause the video and try it myself, and by golly it worked a treat. I even tried it on the little mat I have where the ruler *always* slips, and I got a nice straight cut. Thank you for that handy tip! 3) At 6:19 - is that one of those thingies you put under the dish drainer that you're using as an ironing pad? Brilliant.
    You are very personable and engaging onscreen. This is the first of your videos I've seen, and I'm going to go right now and check out some more.

      I’m glad you learned something! And yes, that’s a dish drying pad from IKEA! I couldn’t find my wool pad and this worked fine for light pressing!

    I have a suggestion. Add a layer of InsulBrite between the batting layers. Otherwise your potholders may not protect you sufficiently.

  • @elena3831
    @elena3831 Před 4 měsíci +1

      I couldn’t find any. Plus, many people have cotton batting left over from other projects, so I thought it would be fun to show them they can use it.

  • @kathyburt3294
    @kathyburt3294 Před 4 měsíci +1

    will this be insulated enough? You don't need to use that special insulated batting?

    • @timothytotten9409
      @timothytotten9409  Před 4 měsíci +1

      For standard stuff, it’s fine. But if I was going to handle super hot items I would look for the specialty insulation.
