1972 when this song was released . Thirteen years old. It'd seems like Yesterday yo me. Nevertheless was 50 years ago!!!!!. Great song! Great remembrances of my youth.
I was 16. This music took my breath away then, always has, and still does. It will stand the test of time. (My daughter is 20, discovered this song on her own, and loves it.)
I wasn't born is California but worked there as an adult for 35 years. I lost my job and had to live back east for 6 years. The whole time back there all I could think was to come back to Southern California. I did last year. This song was one of the reasons.
What's more is that this song has a story people can relate to. The narrator goes to California with all the hopes and dreams of making it big mainly due to stories he has been led to believe. However, once he is there, he finds that California was not at all what he imagined. Hence, he leaves disappointed and disillusioned.
Only those raised elsewhere, that later resided in California (both back then, and also recently, to now) can "relate." I left for GOOD, recently. Timelessly, Apropos song!
Surprised how many people listen to the song and think it's about rain when in fact it has nothing to do with rain at all. Great lyrics so many of us can relate. The best 70s
Years ago, I graduated from the great University of Michigan. To celebrate, I decided to drive out to California from my home in Detroit. The first day, I reached St. Louis . I had never seen it rain so hard. I thought I wanted to go home. But, I continued on with my trip and it turned out to be maybe the best trip of my life.
The first time I heard this song, I was at my Dad's friend's ranch.. they had an Oldsmobile station wagon that had many windows in it and on the roof. I just remember driving out to some ranch where I rode a horse for the first time. On the way back home we were in my Dad's 65 GTO, and it was the Hollies playing a Long cool woman in a black dress. RIP Dad, I miss you and all the wonderful times and adventures you gave us kids.

"Brings back sweet memories" -- really? did you read the lyrics past the chorus? It's not a 'happy song', far from it... "Out of self respect, I'm out of bread I'm underloved, I'm underfed I wanna go home" "Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it?... Please don't tell 'em how you found me Don't tell 'em how you found me Gimme a break"
@@mambi74 thanks for your comments. Sweet memories, I mean a time when I was a kid, where my father used to play this song. I am not referring to the lyric but the tune and nostalgia of the 60s 70s era.
@Matias_V , For many people including myself, the song brings back memories of hearing it when I was a kid and the music is happy sounding. However, I totally agree with you. When you listen to the lyrics, you find they are not happy at all. The narrator goes to California with high hopes and dreams of making it big only to find out it was not what he imagined. Therefore, he is homesick and wants to go home to his hometown.
One of the great American songs of all time. A song that's loved and cherished all over the world. Haven't heard this for a long long time. Oh, how it reminds me of my youth growing up in Southern California. It was so much different back then, so much different. Gonna be 60 in a couple years...God I miss those days. At my age, you do a lot of harking back, especially considering the state of the world right now.
This song reminds me of my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battle with cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, life could be so unfair most times but sometimes I wonder why bad things always happen to good people. She’s always in our hearts
Thank you for your kindness yes i do play well you may think that is old music but it is the best thing you ever Heard you probably have the same person who loves the taste of what was there but it is still available and thank You for excepting my own music
He is from my home town of Gibraltar and btw we are bi-lingual ie we can speak and think in this case in english and spanish. Plus his parents and my parents knew each other going back to WW2
The melody of this song is truly beautiful. I danced this song many times and still do. Reminds me when I went to California many, many years ago. I was in Los Angeles when California was a beautiful state to visit. Love this song, it is very pretty indeed.
Our music teacher would come to our school once a month, or so. She would bring her guitar, and we kids would all sing. I still remember singing this song. It was probably 5th grade, or so.
Heard this the other day by chance for the first time in 25-30 years. Reminds me of going to my grans as a kid, listening to the radio waiting for the football coming on on Saturday. Miss u gran x
Albert, when I was a kid,.. My family in Tijuana we lessening your music, late 70's. We just live by the Beach. Good memories!... Thank You,.. for your music.
1972: Hammond, with co-writer Mike Hazelwood, wrote a number of hits for various artists in the 70's and 80's. The Hollies "The Air that I Breathe" was likely the biggest. But this one Hammond did himself and hit #5 with it.
My teen daughter asked why so many old songs are about California. I told her California has not always been a dump. Not too long ago it was a dream for people all over the world to live there.
Love love this song. He has such a great voice. I think we will never get sick of this song. Been to Calif. Wish I had stayed. Such a great singer.. wish I could go back to this music. Love it. .🥰😇💯👏👏👏👏💖🥳🥳🥳💯🤗
Been to many parts of the country and lived in many of them. I have to say it rains in all of them no matter how great they seem to be before you get there. Love this song.
@@michaelkoszowski3716 , Actually, when you think about it, this is song is not really about it raining anyplace. Rather, it is about someone who goes to California in pursuit of his dreams of making it big. However, when he is in California, he finds it is not at all what he was led to believe. Hence, he became disillusioned and wanted to go home.
Jimmy B others are correct here. You totally missed the point of this song. The title is sarcastic. It Never Rains in Southern California is part of the fake picture painted by Hollywood and many people about the beauty, glamor and weather, etc. It's ALL an illusion, just like the movies, the plastic surgery done to make people look "perfect" and all of the other hype about California and Hollywood. He didn't find it to be true because it ISN'T. His dreams were shattered and he realized the truth in the most painful way. This song resonates with many people because there are so many things in life we can be disillusioned by.
When I was a teenager I had been listening to this particular singer. Now I am still playing his lovely song and rhythm music for the past 50 years. Very interesting song and one of my best. Keep the song going.
I was 12 years old...when I heard this beautiful song for the first time. It impacted me...that it has rained a lot in Southern California... this year ! , which means that since the 70s through the present time, there has been a significant change in the weather. However, I love this song, because it takes me back to those magical years when I believed, the world was better than it is today ! Thanks Mr. Albert Hammond for this BEAUTIFUL song !!!
Folks, as I'm sitting here watching this, I can't help but wonder if today's kids will ever look back with nostalgia on the music they're growing up with
Back in January of 1973, I was living in Southern California, and it rained unusually a lot that year. This song brings back many memories of driving through the rain while this song played on the radio.
The voice of the singer is outstanding, considering it is real, and the music backing him is good too, this is one of those old songs I still like to listen to.
Thanks for everything Albert. You brought beauty and happiness (even with a sad song (Hey, that sounds like a great song title!)) into a lot of peoples lives.

true
I hear that . Good music . One of a kind.
It Sounds good to me😊. Remember hearing it many years ago.
There is some good stuff out there, but it doesn't just pour out of your average radio anymore. You really have to look in back alleys of the internap.

Another one of those great 70's songs. The greatest decade in rockn roll.
🥀Beautiful Song Brilliant lyrics, vocals and music🥀✌
Got on board a westbound seven forty-seven
Didn't think before deciding what to do
Oh, that talk of opportunities,
TV breaks and movies
Rang true,
sure rang true
Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California,
but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours
Out of work,
I'm out of my head
Out of self respect,
I'm out of bread
I'm underloved,
I'm underfed, I want to go home
It never rains in California,
but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours
Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it?
Had offers but didn't know which one to take
Please don't tell 'em how you found me
Don't tell 'em how you found me
Gimme a break,
give me a break
Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California,
but girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours
Thank you

Haven't heard this for a long long time. Oh, how it reminds me of my youth growing up in Southern California. It was so much different back then, so much different. Gonna be 60 in a couple years...God I miss those days. At my age, you do a lot of harking back, especially considering the state of the world right now.
Better "over the hill" than under it, bro. I'll be 60 in January. But birthdays are a gift denied to many. 😎
I can relate. Born 69’👍
Ahhh, 1972-73. :) Sucks me right back in time. Makes me smile.
This song reminds me of my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battle with cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, life could be so unfair most times but sometimes I wonder why bad things always happen to good people. She’s always in our hearts
love Albert Hammond's Never Rains In Southern California. What a good looking guy and still is xx.
Thank you for your kindness yes i do play well you may think that is old music but it is the best thing you ever Heard you probably have the same person who loves the taste of what was there but it is still available and thank You for excepting my own music
Agree he was handsome in his youth and still good-looking...in his older years...
Love Albert Hammond! So talented and versatile! His Spanish songs are just as good and loved.
Man , i was 37 years old when i found out albert was british . I heard all his spanish song but not this one . This guy is so talented . Amazing
Yessss was successful in both languages😎♥️♥️♥️
I believe that Albert was born in Gibratar.
He is from my home town of Gibraltar and btw we are bi-lingual ie we can speak and think in this case in english and spanish. Plus his parents and my parents knew each other going back to WW2
He was the best in BOTH worlds, Spanish and English worlds!!!
I used to listen to his songs as a child!!!
The melody of this song is truly beautiful. I danced this song many times and still do. Reminds me when I went to California many, many years ago. I was in Los Angeles when California was a beautiful state to visit. Love this song, it is very pretty indeed.
A song to fight for life for everyone who comes to seek luck in America. The song is very beautiful.
70’s but heard it a lot in my childhood in the 90’s when my parents were listening to their vinyls! I love it, so nostalgic 🙂
There were the beautiful days. We were so beautiful!😂
Or we oo
Our music teacher would come to our school once a month, or so. She would bring her guitar, and we kids would all sing. I still remember singing this song. It was probably 5th grade, or so.
Heard this the other day by chance for the first time in 25-30 years. Reminds me of going to my grans as a kid, listening to the radio waiting for the football coming on on Saturday. Miss u gran x
This. Song 🎶 Bring good memories of my mother RIP she dint understand the words But she loved 🥰 the music 🎼 i love ❤️ you my mother ❤️💯💯💯🤗🤗🌹🥰
Albert, when I was a kid,.. My family in Tijuana we lessening your music, late 70's. We just live by the Beach. Good memories!... Thank You,.. for your music.
I love Tijuana. I miss it so much.
1972: Hammond, with co-writer Mike Hazelwood, wrote a number of hits for various artists in the 70's and 80's. The Hollies "The Air that I Breathe" was likely the biggest. But this one Hammond did himself and hit #5 with it.
Stumbled upon this song quite by accident, it's before my generation but i love the lyrics and generally it's a lovely song, thank you ♥️

Fell in love with you and this song back in the 70s when I was a teen 😊😊❤️❤️❤️❤️
What a genius to write a song like this it's timeless

I love this song.❤
Such a sad song. He brings out the emotion.
A well crafted pop song that still sounds brand new even after all these years... & it tells an interesting but sad story.
My teen daughter asked why so many old songs are about California. I told her California has not always been a dump. Not too long ago it was a dream for people all over the world to live there.
New York and California are the Best states to live in. The nicest and smartest people in the U.S.
Still lovely for me
@@scottross6404 The massive population exodus from both states say otherwise. Smart people know to leave.
@@scottross6404 I wouldn't live there if you paid me to!
Still is "the dream" for many. Just depends on one's attitude. I loved the years I lived in California and I still like to visit on occasion.
Love love this song. He has such a great voice. I think we will never get sick of this song. Been to Calif. Wish I had stayed. Such a great singer.. wish I could go back to this music. Love it. .🥰😇💯👏👏👏👏💖🥳🥳🥳💯🤗

Albert Hammond's music is well known throughout the Universe.
Really love this man's voice. A great song for a great singer.
Been to many parts of the country and lived in many of them. I have to say it rains in all of them no matter how great they seem to be before you get there. Love this song.
Interesting observation . 👍
@@williamlandolfi7858 ..yeah , especially when that mortgage bill came in . 😖
You missed the point brother, he sings about the beautiful picture they paint about Hollywood to young aspiring actors and actresses
It’s amazing MR. Hammond is a great songwriter and talented singer.
Agree. 💜💜
Albert's indeed the icon of early 70's pop music. Love his music to bits!
Back in '89, I owned a (tired) '73 Dodge conversion van. This song was (often) on the radio! My '70s WERE LATE, BUT I LOVED THIS!
This is saying it never rains but it pours in Southern California!
Me trae recuerdos de juventud, la he bailado muchas veces, sus canciones me gustan mucho ❤️❤️❤️
Folks, as I'm sitting here watching this, I can't help but wonder if today's kids will ever look back with nostalgia on the music they're growing up with
I don't think they will.
IS THAT WHAT THEY CALL IT NOWADAY'S ,,,,,,,, MUSIC? I HAVE OTHER NAMES FOR IT!!.
What’s to look back on? We have a generation of writers who took Frost and Shakespeare, who got replaced with a group with studied poetic illiteracy.
Still listening to this song in 2023. Listening from New Zealand 09/23/2023, 7.08pm.

Back in January of 1973, I was living in Southern California, and it rained unusually a lot that year. This song brings back many memories of driving through the rain while this song played on the radio.
It is raining hard now
The voice of the singer is outstanding, considering it is real, and the music backing him is good too, this is one of those old songs I still like to listen to.
Thank you for the good memories, and go back in time and space.
My mom had this song on 45 record, she played it until she wore it out , I learned it I love it
Hello handsome, your song is Happy to the soul. This song 😍💕😍 is never been gone but stay for ever. So so so beautiful ❤️❤️😍💙

Thanks for everything Albert. You brought beauty and happiness (even with a sad song (Hey, that sounds like a great song title!)) into a lot of peoples lives.
