    Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
Though he was born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1946, John declared himself “pure Kentuckian” throughout his life. His parents, Willian and Verna, were natives of Paradise, Kentucky. The family would spend summers there in Muhlenberg County, where John listened to bluegrass music and studied the guitar styles of country music heroes Doc Watson and Merle Travis with his older brother, Dave.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

I met John Prine in Nashville one evening at the Station Inn. I walked up to him and said I was a great fan. He replied Geez, theres 3 of you now! I asked if I could buy him a beer and he said he just couldn't disappoint a fan. Great poet, great musician and a great part of my life. Thank you, John. Rest easy, my friend.....

I spent the next two hours researching his music and him personally. What an interesting person. His song lyrics are amazing. I added many of his songs to my playlist and look forward to getting to know him and his music better.

Ever since, I’ve started my day with it before work. Makes me cry, smile, and laugh all at the same time. He truly brought smiles to everyone he ever came in contact with, just like mr. prine. The father of a friend of mine who had gone off to college (leaving me behind) took me to see John at the Alabama Theater in Birmingham in 1981. I've loved John and the wistful pleasure of laughing at life in song -- ever since that day. Please be brave, John Prine. Come back to us if you will.

I heard John in '70 or '71 at the University of Houston, in a large classroom, before he became well known. The Pacifica radio station, KPFT I think, in Houston kept saying that you have to see this guy play. There were probably 20 people in the room, and I was right in front about 6 feet away. Needless to say, I was blown away. Songs about a guy coming back from 'Nam a junkie, old people, Paradise, Jeez I couldn't believe the songs. I remember looking around and some of the audience was straight-laced fraternity boys with their sorority girl dates, and it was obvious that they just didn't get that they were in the presence of an artist for the ages. Oh well. I've been a fan ever since, and, yes, when you are feeling down, there's something about his songs that makes everything allright.

I love Bill, I love John, I love _this..._ Way back in the day, we had pig roasts/keg parties/bonfires, lots of people, and lots of Rock-N-Roll. For most of the night, we would have Sabbath, Kiss, Saxon, Van Halen, and a plethora of rock and metal blasting from the speakers. At some point after midnight, there were some people passed out while others were beginning to get rowdy... Then... John Prine would come out of those speakers, and people mellowed out, sat around the fire and sang along (drunk style, thinking we sounded like a choir of angels, but the reality would be far, far worse). It wasn't just a few parties here and there, Prine was like a god to us back then (still is a music god in the artistic genius sort of way). Living in a small town, we thought we had some sort of secret JP society that the rest of the world was missing out on. With the advent of the Internet, I find out we weren't as special as we thought we were - lol. Turns out that Johnny Cash, Roger Waters, and I guess the entire world knew our secret, so we didn't have much of a secret after all. God bless John Prine for the part he played in my youth, _and the rest of the world also._ And thank you Bill, for telling this story, maybe there will be a few people left who have not yet been blessed by the music of John Prine, and maybe he'll show up just when they need him the most.

Two of my all time favs are John Prine and John Hiatt, whom we saw last July. Both from the midwest, Prine was a mailman in a Chicago suburb before he was discovered. Prine is more of a folk artist with a unique and quirky down to earth view on life. I saw him at a small venue in the 80s, he did not disappoint. I think I like the album "Sweet Revenge" the best. His song "Fish and Whistle " will be played at my funeral. So glad I saw him live.

It was somewhere in the midst of 1993, I was in the middle of a heart-wrenching divorce and was at the lowest point of my entire life. Didn't really care if I lived or died. I would love to hear you play in person. In Daytona Beach, FL. Thank you for your music, your humor, your honesty, and making me thankful that I found the rest of your music after listening to Sam Stone for 15 years.
My husband is a disabled Vietnam veteran. When we met, he was 15 years sober, and Sam Stone was one of the songs that was always in his play list. One day, I decided to see what other songs were performed by this John Prine, and I was blown away.
Six years ago my husband suffered a traumatic brain injury from a motorcycle accident. His guitar playing is one of the thing he loved that's affected by his injury, but he doesn't give up. Every day he picks up his guitar, sits in front of his microphone and keeps trying to get his music back.
Today I showed him Some Humans Ain't Human. He said he can't pick like you do, so I suggested chords and strumming. Every day we're on the right side of the grass it's a gift. That's my motto, and you can write a song about it :-)

Please don't bury John in that cold, cold ground. Don't cut him up in pieces and pass him all around either. Instead kick the snot bubbles out of that Virus and restore our beloved John Prine to his Meatloaf Loving self to write and sing for many many more years to come.💖

That's a great story! Prine is definitely great medicine when you're feeling down. I actually have a great story about John from about 25 years ago. There was a year or so where I worked for John fixing his 1940's Wurlitzer jukebox. I was an occasional guest at his home until the project was finished. Sometime afterward, I was working third shift on my regular job. The people I was working for were horrible to many employees. I too became very depressed which is something I have been dealing with for years. One night at 3AM, the phone rings and it was Prine. Completely took me by surprise. I have to say it's is not only great to listen to his music but the few rare conversations I had were wonderful.

I’ve seen Mr Prine 3 times live in Kentucky in the last 15 ish years. To his family and friends there are many tears falling while writing this and I can assure mine are not the only in KY! I Was turned on to him in my early 20’s. The first time I saw him was when I graduated college in Lexington Ky from UK in 04 ish. My younger sister invited me! I was surprised by her and her friends had an extra ticket. I called a guy I grew up with, told him JP is there. He paid a scalper a lot to get a seat. I stood at the top of the opera house with my neck turned and my head hitting the ceiling, the absolute worst seat in the house! But I had to stand up the entire time so I could see him! This place was packed with all ages! But the most amazing thing was the whole auditorium sang so loud with every word of his songs that I could barely hear him! And what’s even more amazing is that my 80 yr old professor called me and said he saw me there! RIP JP!

I've already heard it then, grabbed that album on a "it's John Prine so can't fail" whim to listen to at work and wasn't disappointed. I liked the more minimalist acoustic style. guess I gotta go back and pay proper attention to the lyrics though. I've been a fan damn near my whole life, starting younger than I could've possibly understood the lyrics, and only recently (right before learning of his passing) really got back into it. especially his debut album. as someone who has worked on the front lines of addiction, "sam stone" became this gut punch of a song with so much implication, so subversive for its time, that once I learned what "popped his last balloon" really means I can't hear that song without tearing up. or paradise, the first song where the meaning hit home even as a young child. thank goodness for his sense of humor, as I'd be afraid his premature departure would make me too sad to enjoy his works again, and I can't abide the idea.

I found JP in the early 90's when I was in my late twenties. Freshly divorced, seriously depressed, and feeling like a failure. It was after midnight and caught a DJ interviewing John. He talked for thirty minutes, then sang "Sam Stone" and "Illegal Smile". That started the healing process. Divorce still felt like an amputation, but I no longer belived that I was a failure. Fast forward 13 years. I had moved back to my home state after 26 years. I reconnected with a friend from my very early years and found to my surprise that we had many things in common. Strange, as she was 4 years my senior. Those years did not mean much in our 40's, but they sure had back in our teens. We dated for four months and all was nice. Out of the blue she started humming a tune. I started quietly singing the tune. She started harmonizing "Sam Stone" with me. We looked at each other and both said "you know Jonhn Prine ". It took a few weeks for the ceremony, but that was the moment I decided to marry her. That was 15 years ago and we are both looking forward to the next 50. It truly is a big old goofy world.
Good luck! There are many more John Prine junkies from which to choose.

    Hello in There
    Angel from Montgomery
Those songs could not be anymore perfect but geez they are all gems.
I love listening to Prine, always brings a tear or a smile but sometimes I just like to think about Prine, about those songs being formulated in his head while he delivers mail, it just puts me right in the float

The great people of our time were in a time when governments didn't rule the world. It was great news last night when I found out John prines condition had improved to "stable". One of those lines John wrote, that kind of signifield trouble on the road for our country, was when he sung about Lady Liberty getting laid in a foreign sports car at the drive-in on Rt 41.
