  • In 2019, Burrendong Dam in central western New South Wales was at such a risk of running dry that local councils implemented strict water use restrictions for residents in the already parched region.

    But in the three years since, La Niña's exceptionally wet weather conditions have brought heavy rainfalls and flooding to the region. Now dam authorities face a delicate balancing act of releasing water to reduce the spill risk while minimising flood damage to downstream communities and landholders.
