Most of my local courses don't tamp the hole after so the hole is slightly raised like a tiny volcano.

Challenging golfers is part of it. Adding variety is a bigger part. Green health and playability is the reason tho. Imagine if the hole stayed in one spot. The area around it would be destroyed bc it never gets time to heal.

Cutting cups is one of the most important jobs on a golf course. Sadly 90 percent of the courses I've played gave zero Fs about doing this job well.

The nicest course in my hometown puts the plastic rims on the holes and it raises the hole on every green🤦🏻‍♂️

​@@justinsanders195 plastic liner helps hold the shape of the cup longer so cups are cut less frequently. We only do it in the wintertime, but I would imagine if a place is understaffed they would use them in season.
