Game Show Garbage - Bullseye (1980 Version)

  • On this edition of Game Show Garbage, Cyndi enters some self-reflection and takes a hard look at one of her favorite shows from awhile ago in the Jim Lange hosted show called Bullseye. This shouldn't be confused with the Jim Bowen version involving Darts in the UK, this one involves being a complete knockoff of The Joker's Wild, done by the same folks who did The Joker's Wild.

    Personally, I liked Bullseye, when they had civilian contestants. When they added celebrities to the mix, that's when this show jumped the shark.

      @JMFabiano The problem with Celebrity Whew! was the celebrity took away half of the civilian's control. If you're a smart contestant that ended up with a dum-dum celebrity you'd be screwed. You were in good hands with Betty White or Jamie Farr, but if your partner was Gary Collins or Mary Ann Mobley...lotsa luck.

    This to me is a spot on review. The single biggest flaw to me is in theory, If one player takes a category for $100 and is on a Bullseye, they could, in theory at least, answer 19 in a row, miss the 20th, then control goes to the other player, and with just one answer, could win the game. I am sorry, but for one player to answer 19 correct and lose to a player who gets only 1 right is a huge flaw. Card Sharks 2001 had a similar flaw. One player could call every card right, miss the last one and the other player would win doing absolutely nothing at all! The bonus game dragged out too. Was extremely yawn inducing when they had the ten spin maximum. Still was very slow and tedious with 7 spins. Maybe if the dollar amounts had increased with each progressive spin, and a bigger threat of the lightning striking with each subsequent spin, that might have added a bit more drama to it. There was at least one or two times that I can recollect where the show began in the middle of a bonus game already in progress. That should never ever happen. The game was fun to play along with as far as the questions were concerned, and yes it was quite a neat and unique and bright set. Jim was pretty decent as host, although to me his best work was with Name That Tune. And indeed, the addition of the celebrities just made a sub-par game even less enjoyable to view. To make it even more tedious, having it be a best 2 out of 3 game match really made it draaaaag on. Then the end game was often worth less, another huge flaw.

      "Card Sharks 2001 had a similar flaw. One player could call every card right, miss the last one and the other player would win doing absolutely nothing at all!"
      That was done on the original versions, but in a far different (and better) fashion-- in Sudden Death (if neither player had cleared the board by the fourth question [third on the tiebreaker]), the fourth (or third) question was played for the all-important control of the board. It was all-important because whichever player had control had a choice; he/she could change the base card and try to finish his/her row, and if successful, he/she won the game/match; else, the opponent did. Or, he/she could pass to the opponent, who had to play from whatever card was his/her base card (even if it was the worst card in the deck); same rules applied in reverse (if the opponent cleared the board; he/she won the game/match; else, the first player did).

      There was something addicting about Bonus Island, even though it was the stupid,
      a) spin until you win,
      b) spin until you get electrocuted,
      c) spin until you wuss out.
      One of the many reasons I hate Face The Devil, and the syndicated Martindale and Caldwell, Beat The Dragon. Pat Finn had the only good bonus round on Joker's Wild, while Wink's original CBS run, and Patrick Wayne's Tic-Tac-Dough bonus round does it correctly with X's and O's instead of the idiotic dollar amounts.
      And yes, I hate the interrupting of bonus rounds. (Jeopardy! style) Double Dare had that same problem with Beat The Spoilers. A problem that would have not been one if they SELF CONTAINED the episodes by going "most money at the end of the show" goes on to fight the Spoilers, instead of the stupid "first to [insert dollar amount]" rules.
      It especially doesn't help Bonus Island with Jim Lange constantly STRETCHING OUT THE DRAMA like that! Millionaire may have been the trendsetter (just another reason to hate that show), but (Joker's Wild style) Bullseye was one of the first to REALLY stretch out the drama. Thanks to Bullseye and Millionaire, it gave birth to more drama stretching shows with Deal or No Deal being the worst offender.

    Personally, I liked Bullseye, but I agree, once it became Celebrity Bullseye, the writing was on the wall.
    I think if they simply got rid of the bullseye in the "contract window" in the front game, it would have improved the game alot. Also, reducing the number of questions in a contract from 1-infinity, to 1-3 (keeping with the theme of "3") would've helped also.

    • @EricLimasTPLEra77
      @EricLimasTPLEra77 Před 6 lety +3

      I disagree about getting rid of the bullseye in the contract window but I would change it this way: Keep the Bullseye in the contract window and it acts as a money doubler to lead the fast track to $2K instead....for example, let's say I got It's The Letter at $400 a question and I got Jumbled Words at $400 a question, and the contract is a Bullseye and instead of answering 5 questions to win,I would have to answer 3 because the $400 will double to $800 due to the Bullseye.

    There is a reason this looks like Joker, if you knew why this was created. CBS cancelled Joker in 1975. They realized they made a mistake and B&E created a game called Double Cross, which was the origin of Bullseye.

      I remember Ron Greenberg saying this was supposed to essentially be "spinning Who What or Where Game," but that they changed it because, ironically, it was too much like Joker. The interesting thing is, "spinning Who, What or Where Game" actually sounds like an intriguing idea.
      This was one of my first game shows when I was a kid, and one of my favorites, though Cyndi has the show's flaws right on the head. A better host and better game material might have made the show work better, but in the end, Cyndi's right: it's just a rehash of TJW.

    I'm torn here, because I still think that the civilian format had many good things going for it. That said, I concur with the suggestion of removing the potentially open-ended nature of the contracts--certainly with regards to not having the Bullseye contracts, and maybe also with not having contracts continue on a miss. The worst thing for me, though, is that B&E was pushing this show in syndication while both TJW and TTD were at their peak; it might've worked better if the company waited a few years, especially if it couldn't sell the show to a network.
    Also, I don't think anyone has yet mentioned one of the worst parts of the celebrity format: its abrupt debut, which didn't even allow for the final civilian game to air its completion.

    Cyndi As someone that liked this particular show. I have to say you did a great job at deconstructing what was WRONG with the format (the big set and bombastic music covering up weak TJW/TTD hybrid) and why exactly it didnt last long. I think this video along with Mike Burger( of gameshowpilotlight) are the best critical deconstructions of the format. Its safe to say with TJW and TTD strong Bullseye was overkill and showed in the low clearance and low ratings. And as for Celebrity Bullseye, lets just say it was pure GARBAGE headed to the Game Show Landfill! Great critique. Sidenote its nice that you also critique flaws of even the most successful and iconic franchises. thats the mark of a quality critic. Kudos.

    One thing that was overlooked, the pilot. Link below. $1000+ which you kept, but now you get to Bullseye Island and that $1000 would be the base for what happens next. There's a bullseye there that the contestant presses to find out how many chances to double that pot you have. It could come up 3, 4, 5, or bullseye.
    So say you hit 4. Then you can spin up to 4 times to double you $$$. So you could double $2k-$4K-$8-$16K. But lightning would be in all 3 windows (no freezing) and if you hit that, you go back to the amount you won in the game. So you had to decide whether to go on or stop (basic Barry-Enright)
    The real fun...and Jack Barry's increased intake of Kaopectate...would happen if you hit Bullseye at the small board, That meant you could spin as many times until you quit, hit lightning and lose everything, or hit the $Million. That's a 10 spin proposition if anyone was willing to sit through that and Barry was willing to pay out that much.
    Here's the pilot: czcams.com/video/QGlo5IOuH6Y/video.html

    My views:
    1) If the champ runs the table & have a perfect game - the challenger has a second chance & stuck around for the next game
    NOT FAIR FOR SOMEONE WHO STRUGGLED TO GET ON THE SHOW IN THE FIRST PLACE JUST STAND THERE & LOSE WITH NO CHANCE TO PLAY THE GAME. - EVEN WORST, THAT PERSON GET TO ANSWER A QUESTION & BLOWS IT DOESN'T GET ANOTHER CHANCE.
    2) TRYING TO CLEAR A BIG CONTRACT - ESPECIALLY WHEN MANY QUESTIONS WERE MISSED & CONTROL IS GOING BACK AND FORTH BECAUSE THE PLAYERS KEEP GETTING WRONG ANSWERS.
    Back to Joker's Wild - I hated the (3 Jokers & ANSWERING A CORRECTLY FOR AN INSTANT WIN)

    I always liked Bullseye, but I do have to admit that you're right. About the only unique thing with it among B&E's shows was the option to bank money after the end of a contract. And, of course, there's no denying that the contract idea slows things down if both contestants happen to suck at a particular category. And, of course, turning into Celebrity Bullseye made things exponentially worse, a mistake they would repeat with Hot Potato and that the producers of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire would repeat in late 2001/early 2002.

    Okay I have thought a lot about this since watching this video. I think these changes would make the gameplay a lot more fair and reasonable.
    1. For a contract, you only get asked the number of questions from the bottom window, right or wrong. A contract should not end on all questions being answered right.
    2. After completing a contract you have to bank the money in the pot. That wouldn’t take away the purpose of the pot, because any wrong answer would give the other player a chance to take over the contract.
    3. A bullseye contract ends after a wrong answer by both contestants. Rather than continue to allow the spinner to keep going. If you want to take advantage of the bullseye you have to rip off a lot of right answers in a row.

    • @bmasters1981
      @bmasters1981 Před rokem

      "A contract should not end on all questions being answered right."
      So in other words, if both players happened to not know anything about a particular category being played in a contract (one player missing, and the other missing as well), that should not be grounds for a possibly interminable contract where the number of questions indicated in the window was strictly adhered to and was not finished until that number of correct answers; is that right?

    • @christhomas8729
      @christhomas8729 Před rokem +1

    For a show where daring determines the fate of a player, there were just too many flaws. How I would do Bullseye is this...
    Dollar values would now range from $200-$1000, 5 categories in each window with a goal of $5000 to win the game. Also, after each contract is completed, you bank the money automatically unless you give a wrong answer. Do that and the contract is voided out plus any money already in the pot as well as control goes to the opponent. However...I woud add the lightning from Bonus Island to the main game. If you spin the lightning in the bottom window, you lose control. Bonus Island plays as before except the dollar values range from $1000-$5000, goal is either 3 bullseyes, $25,000 or 10 spins - whichever comes first. Also, if you get a natural triple of dollar amounts, it's a $50,000 payoff and an automatic win.

    There was a similar pilot to this show called double cross which had each contestant select a specialty category b4 game play to be added to the set of categories in the match. The difference is two windows had dollar amounts from 10 to 100 dollars and the top window had a category. The contestant could answer questions til they miss in the category or bank the money and respin to increase the value of each question but the category is respun how each money window had a cross which if came up ended the contestants turn. First to 1000 wins however both contestants took equal turns. The bonus game had the same money windows but the top category windows now displayed random messages such as spin is zero or add 200. Contestant had 5 spins to hit 1k b4 a cross showed up to win a prize package (african safari in the pilot).

      Okay that's harsh but the duration of a Celeb game was ridiculous cos they made those two out of three. At least with the civilians they were 1 and done so there was that.
      Trying to think who I would have had as a host over Lange is hard because he always seemed genuinely excited when the constants spun the three bullseyes on the Island and ESPECIALLY if they hit the "Natural" out of the chute for $5000 (later $10000 and yes there is a clip of the rare feat).
      Want some real fun? go find the flash game for Bonus Island and try your hand at that...that's is a blast

    I remember this show. I used to watched it a lot since I was a kid. It was first aired on WOR-TV (channel 9) in the early 1980’s, and then later reran on USA during the mid to late 80's and on GSN during the 1990’s. The original and the celebrity versions are well done, but the actual game looks good. The bonus round where you can find three bullseyes for a win, if not, you win the money, and if you see a lightning appeared, you lose. This is similar to one of the bonus rounds in both “Tic Tac Dough” and “Joker’s Wild”. I like the show and it was fun, and you can watch them on CZcams if there are episodes available.
    BTW, the show was taped at CBS Television City (aka the Bob Barker Studio), the same studio that did "The Price Is Right" and many other game shows.

Same goes with Bonus Island ( only they should kept the amount of $100, $150, $200 ). Eliminate the double the money when the contestant got 3 Bullseyes & have a 5 game rule ( contestant won up 5 games they're done having the 5 time in Bonus Island trying to win a car ).

    Now that I think about it, this is correct. In the few episodes I were able to see (even in the celeb version) the advantage always was stilted against the challenger it seemed. Unlike let's say Hot Potato where there weren't any advantages. There, with Hot Potato, you litterally lived by the answer, and died by the answer.

    Normally, being a big Bullseye fan,I would have ripped this video BUT....there are some valid points you made on this video about Bullseye. And I gotta agree with Greggo's Game Shows, those dang contracts are a pain,LOL! My friend Frankie Satori hosted the show on the MVG Productions Channel in the Discord app and we had to deal with the Beatles and Poets & Poetry in 2 separate contracts and it was a battle completing those contracts,LOL! What I would have done is keep the Bullseye in the contract window and it acts as a money doubler to lead the fast track to $2K instead....for example, let's say I got It's The Letter at $400 a question and I got Jumbled Words at $400 a question, and the contract is a Bullseye and instead of answering 5 questions to win,I would have to answer 3 because the $400 will double to $800 due to the Bullseye.

    Bullseye is definitely remembered more for its cosmetics than its gameplay. And in that sense, the game is quite successful -- the set and the special effects were pretty impressive for their time. One suspects if Barry & Enright hoped the bells & whistles would distract viewers from the fact that their game was a dull, slow-paced carbon copy of The Joker's Wild.

    I absolutely agree that the celebrity format was TERRIBLE, but I really liked the civilian format a lot. The front game really involved both good general knowleedge and strategy along with a fair amount of risk, and I'd agrue that the champion getting to go first is just as much of an advantage in this game as it is in Tic Tac Dough. The bonus game was also a lot more interesting than just picking numbers or spinning a wheel trying to get to $1,000.

      Edward Shore After the show's cancellation, the name "Bullseye" was used as a pricing game on "The Price Is Right", same name, completely different game. The object is to get one of the item from $10 to $12 to win the game where a contestant choose an item, how many item you want, and then add the price and bingo! If you don't get the Bullseye, you put the sticker in the target, and if you get it wrong, the game continues when you get three tries. If you ran out of tries, you can see if a hidden Bullseye on there. If you can't find a hidden Bullseye, you lose. That's the game I was talking about.
      Prior to this, "The Price Is Right" had "Bullseye #1" and "Bullseye #2" during the first year back in 1972, and it both failed miserably, and it didn't last that long. "Bullseye #1" lasted for a week, and it was the first pricing game that doomed, and no one won the prize, except one contestant was trying to match the price and then they lost when it got close to a $1. In "Bullseye #2", they added a second player to play the game and it failed miserably, but lucky enough, one of the contestants won the game, and it lasted only one game, and sadly, both early pricing games "Bullseye #1 & 2" bit the dust big time.
