  • In this video, Mr. Krug gives students an introduction to chemical kinetics and discusses how reaction rates are calculated. He works several example problems throughout the video.

    How would you find the slope of the tangent line? I understand that we can take a derivative, but in that specific situation there was no formula for the equation.

      Good question! The simplest way to do that at this level is to just draw a tangent line (a line that touches the graph at just that one point) and use algebra (rise over run) to determine its slope. It might not be the most accurate method, but it will work for AP Chem.

    So, will we ever be asked to find a tangent line on the exam? I feel as if all of unit 5 really needs calculus to make intuitive sense and calculating a tangent line by hand feels a little trivial.

      They don't ask students to calculate the slope of a tangent line very often on the exam. More often they ask students 'how' they would determine the rate law, without doing any calculations.
