  • I visited Larne Football Club's Inver Park to witness them win their first ever NIFL Premiership title!
    In this match they took on Linfield (the former champions) and they'll be playing Champions League football next season. Just a few years ago they were part time.

    Was at the game myself although not at the celebrating end. Congratulations to Larne they were the best team. First team outside Belfast for 22 years to win it. It will be great therefore for Irish League football and an encouragement for other provincial towns. To be a great side they have to come back and do it again. I think they can though and it will increase the competition in the league. Well done Larne.

    You should look into going to the Irish Cup Final in Belfast on 7th May, a rematch between Crusaders and Ballymena United who contested last year's cup final. Last season, Ballymena were 1-0 going into stoppage time - Crusaders scored in the last minute of the match to take it to E.T. and scored the winner in E.T. stoppage time! Declan Caddell played his "last" game for Crusaders that day, but had to come out of retirement to help the team out earlier this season - and it was his goal that won the semi-final for Crusaders to take them to the final. What a story!

In this day and age of "Moneyball", it's good to see the little guy put one over on the big boys every now and then. Here's to them being matched w/ Man City or Arsenal in the Champions League next season for a big payday. Can you imagine the crowd at Inver Park for a match like that?

    • @GlentoranMark
      @GlentoranMark Před rokem

      Harbour Rats, I kid you not!
      They have the backing of the creator of Purple Bricks, the online estate agent who hails from the town. He's done this for the love of the town, not to get rich. He's spent most of his money redeveloping the ground, not on the team. Fair play to them and they won't end up a Jack Walker, Blackburn Rovers type team as the league is minor and European money will support the club.
      They'll have to use the National Stadium for group stages but will be able to host preliminary rounds. Getting through 1 stage of the CL means an almost certain play-off place for Europa League. Get into that and they are quids in.
      Good luck to them for next season, but not too much as I want my own team Glentoran to win something for once.

      @@stefanschwalenberg8320, yes and by a long shot. The game is known as the Belclassico an attracts 6k at the Oval (ground capacity) and 10k at the National Stadium (18k capacity). Crowds have increased year-on-year in the IL and the derby is only growing in numbers.

      I'm Northern Irish and love his coverage of our league but we (Glentoran) played TNS in the Europa League 2 seasons ago and I did a bit of ground hopping while I was there. I didn't see any football but I got a warm welcome at Rhyl FC and walked around the ground. I love my wee team and league and just wish they had the same passion in Wales. There's as many travel to England and Scotland every week chasing glory but there's something special following the minnows of Europe. Support your local side, it's the only way things will improve.
      Larne are now on my hate list but in all honesty I was chuffed to bits they won it because we couldn't. Fair play to the owner (Kenny Bruce who created Purple Bricks), he's invested in something he loves, he's totally revamped the ground and put the town on the map, I've nothing but admiration for him.

    Great vid Sam, Linfield might just have a rival on and off the pitch, instead of all these other wee clubs crying about money etc, get off yer arses and support and build the way Mr Bruce has.

    Excellent story. Good luck to Larne FC in the future, from a lifelong Man United fan of 50 years. Keep up the good work lads.

    Great video, great fans and a nice small stadium. But Champions League? Well the Cap now is around 3200. They need 8000 seats to play in the Champions league. If they qualify they most likely have to play in Belfast.

      We aren't going to qualify for the Champions League Group stages and nobody would expect Larne to qualify for them. But if they can keep that squad of players together and add another few good signings in the summer then they are well capable of becoming the 1st Irish League team to qualify for a European group stage in the UEFA Conference League. They beat AGF Aarhus and Pacos de Ferreira in the Conference League a couple of years ago in the qualifying rounds with a far worse squad of players than what's there now

      Yes, they will likely play at the National Stadium if they get to the group stages. I'm sure the Larne supporters wouldn't mind with the £10m or so for getting there. I'd even say Kenny Bruce would pay for the buses for the fans.

    FYI, you should avoid P&O if at all possible, they fired most of their staff with no notice about a year ago to replace them with cheaper foreign workers. I refuse to use them ever again even though I used their service frequently.
