Watched a ton of good movies in that movie theater from 1980 to 1982. Airplane, Caddyshack, Indiana jones, ET, Porkys, The Shining, Empire Strikes back, The Thing. Base was hopping during that time period.

After the Soviet Union dissolved, the US closed a lot of bases. They kept Sembach open but the airfield was closed and redeveloped. You can kind of see it via satellite.

@@KMcNally117 Yes. I heard it was an Army installation now. Those were some good memories. I used to eat at a gasthaus right off base. Werner's pub I believe it was called. The veal cordon bleu was magnificent.

So sad to see this. I grew up in middle school on that base. One of the best memories living there was the icecream lady Mrs. Sonya. The neighborhood kids would chase after around the base to buy ice-cream. She had the best icecream.

Thank you for sharing. It's possible it's just quiet because of the summer. They were building what looked to be a new school building (you can see the construction near the end of the video).

I was stationed there from 1976-78. Place was hopping. I believe the Air Force gave the base to the Army. The Army gave it to the Germans. Now it’s abandoned

Thank you for sharing. Based off what I I'm able to see, the converted the runway into a field and the area I was running on was only part of the military base. Additionally, it was July and its likely the German employees and their families were on holiday for the summer.

@KMcNally117 back in 1985 I entered the air force as an E1 and Sembach Air Base was my first duty station. This was the cold war so we had fighter planes and helicopters. The flightline was where we worked and the housing side was our off duty living area. The only thing that really sucked was the chemical warfare training we did often which entailed 12 hour shifts wearing chemical suits. In 2003 before I retired I visited the base and was really disappointed in the flightline which was run down and Givin to the German public. Time really changes especially in regards to the military and I'm glad I served during this time period.

I served at the ‘Bach in 76-78, and it was insanely busy. Ch-53’s, F-111’s, A-10’s, OV-10’s, and the occasional F-4 and even occasionally the F-104. C-130’s, C-141’s, C-5’s and even the little O-2! And as mentioned before, the dreaded 12 hour NBC suits (MOPP 4), ugh. Still, great memories and revisited about the time you were TDY. Enjoy Germany!
