  • A few months ago Flight Outfitters sent a few things for us to put through long-term testing, and I’ve been loving the Bush Pilot Flight Bag so much that it’s become my recommendation for most general aviation pilots. I had been looking for a flight bag but had a long list of important, hard to meet requirements:
    Lightweight
    Non-bulky
    Durable
Ability to withstand elements and be set down on a wet/snowy ramp
    Easy-to-access pockets
    Organization without complexity
The Bush Pilot Flight Bag solves all of this for me. The dimensions are 16”l x 9”d x 10.5″h and my scale shows an empty weight of 2 pounds 7 ounces.
As you’ll hear in the video, I’ve chosen to remove the interior dividers seen in the photo above. I think they’re great, and I might add them back in soon, but at the moment I like it better without them in place. The beauty of the dividers is that they operate like you may have seen in a camera bag. They’re velcro so you can remove one or both, or place them anywhere to fit the gear you carry.
The bright orange interior color is a great feature. Gear tends to get lost in black bags but I’ve never had that issue here.
If you often set your bag down on wet or snowy ramps, you’ll love the five metal bumpers on the bottom of the bag. If you’ve accidentally set your bag down in a puddle of oil, hydraulic, or de-ice fluid, you’ll appreciate that this bag is probably fine and won’t spread a huge puddle to the inside, or even the next place you set it. The bumpers keep the bag slightly elevated and free from contaminants.
I made a comment in the video about pleasurable zippers and I really mean that. If your bag is in the seat behind you and you need to grab your iPad, you’ll find that most of the zippers can be operated with a single hand.
I’ve only been using this bag for a few months now, but over 20+ years I’ve used a lot of bags that I can make comparisons with. I expect the Bush Pilot Flight Bag to hold up even better than any other bag I’ve used before and you’ll likely still see me using it many years from now.
At the time of writing, this bag retails for less than $150 and I think that’s a great value for gear that you can expect to use (even grow into if you’re just starting out) for many years.

This is a big problem with flight bags in general. If it can fit a headset it’s normally without the case. (If it can even fit a headset at all), if you can fit it with a case it takes up most of the room in the bag. (Meaning if you have a headset in the bag you can’t also fit knee bored, iPad, etc…)
