Mountain Camping in Heavy Rain and Strong Winds in Snowdonia with the Hilleberg Soulo

  • Join me on a mountain camp in Snowdonia, Wales! The weather is terrible from start to finish on this trip. I hike up the mountain to a small llyn where I setup camp for the night. Despite the weather I cook a nice meal, steak and brussel sprouts, inside my tent using the jetboil and brace for a long night. The Hilleberg Soulo really got put through it’s paces on this trip. Mountain forecast said this area experienced winds up to 95km/h (59mph) that evening. I definitely did not experience sustained winds of that speed as I was able to find a slightly sheltered spot, however I definitely experienced gusts coming through of up to 60mph. In fact, on the way down the mountain a gust hit me from behind and knocked me off my feet. First time I’ve ever experienced that! Anyways, I was unable to film with my normal camera gear for the majority of the trip so most things were filmed with the GoPro. I apologize if the audio and video quality is a little worse than normal. Also, as a result of being secluded in my tent for over 12 hours I decided to just start talking to the camera. I know this is not my normal video format but it never hurts to try something different! Haha, I use words like battered and lug a few times which I normally never use. Not sure why. I think I was a bit nervous talking but eventually I become more comfortable with the camera as the video goes on. I decided to keep all my awkward ramblings in the video because it’s the first time I actually ever talk! So despite not getting much sleep because of the noise throughout the evening, I really enjoyed this trip. I definitely plan on doing more trips to Snowdonia in the near future. Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching and if you have any questions please feel free to leave a comment! ATB

Was caught in a thunderstorm with five days and nights of continuous rain and hail with 3 friends in the bed of river Indus.
We were all in early twenties and were saved by our kerosene stove that burned constantly, keeping the tent comfy and dry all the time.
The roaring of wind outside your tent recreated those moments in my mind after almost 20 years!
    Stay blessed and safe ever!

Just trying to share the experience as best I can. I don’t think I was in any real danger this trip as the low temperature that evening wasn’t too bad. However, I’ve had a tent fail on me in the past in strong winds, so I try to never underestimate the weather or how quickly it can change. I’m pretty confident in the durability of the Hilleberg that I use. I probably wouldn’t have even left the car with any of my other tents. If I did have to hike out because of a tent failure in rainy windy conditions, in the dark, that definitely could be dangerous. I also always carry a personal GPS SOS beacon (Garmin inReach) on me for these types of trips. I may be overly cautious, but I’m a father of two young children so no harm in that! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

Welcome to the Land of my Fathers! I was brought up in Snowdonia, and this was my back yard. In my childhood, when all my friends were playing football, I would be out exploring my local mountains, solo, and I would estimate that 60% of the Welsh mountain weather was like that… character building! Great video, made me feel homesick!

I wonder, where the lightnings are? Making it more exciting. Not in the borderline boring… Reminds me of a friend who were on a long drive one night, raining and alone on highway 55. From Mississippi to Chicago. Thunderstorms and lightnings suddenly appears few miles away around his car. He steps on the break to slowdown. A lightning strike half a meter away in front of his car. He regrets that he left his camera videoing the excitement. Could have been viral. And of course thanks our maker by saving him.

If the weather is cooperative I will always leave the door open when cooking, but even with it closed I’ve found the ventilation to be pretty great in the Soulo! I am not a fan of cleaning the dishes either. If I have a dirty fry pan that can’t be easily wiped clean, I will usually just seal it in a ziplock bag and just wait till I get home to clean it. Making your own dehydrated meals is great! I’ve only ever done Beef jerky or a simple marinara and pasta with my dehydrator. It’s definitely the most convenient way to cook and I agree you can’t beat the ease of dish washing with just the lick of a spoon! Really appreciate you watching the video and taking the time to comment! Have a great week!

Yeah it can definitely be a hassle sometimes. Normally with these types of trips it’s way easier to bring the dehydrated meal. Especially if you are short on space when packing or may end up stuck cooking in a small space. Although when I’m by myself, cooking a nice meal can serve as the entertainment! And in this instance, take my mind off the terrible weather! Definitely give it a try. Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment!

And you're right; food is a great pick-me-up and something to look forward to when confined to the tent (especially in the autumn/winter months). I must admit that I enjoy watching bad-weather camping vids. Especially when chilled at home in my pjs with a cup of coffee! 😂 Have just subscribed, looking forward to watching more! I really enjoyed this and as i said before, keep talking to us because your a nice interesting guy with a calming voice! We once had to rock out a frame tent during s storm, right by a beach! Then a few weeks ago, we camped on site with our new Vango scafell 300 and there was a dreadful storm in the night. It kept hubby awake but i sleep to bad storms. Anyhow next morning, all the tents except our little beauty, had sufferred so it's Vango all the way for us and we have since bought the Cairngorm 3 person and Vango's large hub as a shelter when needed!

The Hilleberg is overkill on most of my camps, but I’ve always told my wife you don’t need it until you need it. On this trip I was happy to have it as I’ve had other tents fail on me in bad weather and that’s no fun. I’ve also been able to pitch it on only rocks (like in my Jurassic coast video) and because the floor is so durable I don’t really worry about it!
