  • Sailing Fast - 9 knots as we sail up the UK coast
Welcome to Cactus sailing where we are sailing the uk, and sailing uk waters, This season we’re heading west to the scilly isles but in future we hope to go sailing and travel further to France or Spain.
Our true ambition is to go sailing around the world cruising along the way in our sailing boat, although our boat might not be up to getting to the Mediterranean (for our comfort levels anyway)
To that point we may change the Bavaria 30 in the future for a bluewater sailing yacht or a liveaboard boat which we can live full time.
But for now the English channel is our ocean and sailing the pacific can be left to other sailing yachts, we will stick to the south coast sailing until we follow in many others footprints.
This sailing vlog and this season you will see our life on board namely boat life in our tiny floating house as we avoid the storms and go off cruising the uk south coast which isnt quite blue water cruising but the tides and winds sure make for a challenging ride!

Great video, just come across you guys so just looking at your old footage. Like the passage planning, really informative. What tide app do you use?

Thanks, the tide app is “Imray tides” it’s about £2.99 for the year but it’s worth it in my opinion as a quick reference.

Apologies for all the questions! I see you guys use the autohelm a lot. Our drive belt came off ours and all the ball bearings went over the side! Anyway I had it repaired but have never quite got the settings right since. It's usually too slow to react or too severe. Looking in the raymarine book there are gain settings etc. Not sure if you've ever looked at the settings but yours seems to work nicely. I'd be interesting in knowing what your settings are at. I might be able to get ours to work as good as yours!

Not a problem! - Yeah I’ve played with the settings a bit, the best way i find is to set it up on a perfectly calm day (with no cross tide! And no sea state!) and under motor and re-teach / calibrate it through the menu. From there all I mess with is the “style” from performance for small frequent adjustments and onto “cruiser” for less often and more severe corrections. Each have their use in different sea conditions I find, but I don’t tend to mess with the gain I figured the autopilot knows better than me :)

Enjoyed watching that. We’ve done that leg a few times. One thing I spotted though was you guys were going to enter pompy via the small boat channel but then I saw you went back out to the port channel marker. Was there not enough tide in the end with the low winds? I always go out to the channel marker as I never quite trust the small boat channel!

Just the little wind we had made joining the channel at no.4 buoy a better option, as we got closer in the wind died! depths on the inner swash way can get quite shallow but we have gone out this way before when there's enough water.

@@CactusSailingI thought so. I've also seen the depth disappear fast there! looked like a good sail up until the wind died off.

Assume that was 9knts SOG i.e more like 5knts boat speed given likely flood tide flow in Solent?
