CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Navin (Steve Martin) catches thieves with a stolen credit card and holds them for the cops by rigging their car to the church next door.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Carl Reiner directs Steve Martin (who co-wrote the script with Carl Gottlieb) in this gag-laden comedy about an idiotic white man, raised by a poor family of black sharecroppers, who doesn't realize he's not black. Navin R. Johnson (Steve Martin) is told the horrible truth when he finds himself instinctively tapping his feet to an easy listening tune on the radio, instead of a low-down blues. His mother (Mabel King) tells him he's white and Navin takes to the road (in a World War II bomber helmet and goggles) to start a new life in St. Louis. A filling station owner, Harry Hartounian (Jackie Mason), give Navin his first break, hiring him to pump gas. One day at the station, Navin has a brainstorm, concocting an invention called "The Opti-grab," a combination handle and nose-brace for eyeglasses. But Navin runs into trouble when a crazed killer (M. Emmet Walsh) picks out his name at random from the telephone book and tries to kill him. Navin escapes to a traveling carnival, where he wrangles a job as the "guess-your-weight" man. At the carnival, he discovers his sexual nature, thanks to stunt rider and S&M enthusiast Patty Bernstein (Catlin Adams). But Navin meets the beautiful Marie (Bernadette Peters) and he quickly falls in love. In the meantime, the "Opti-grab" has taken off and soon Navin is a millionaire.

When he runs away laughing, like he totally got the upper hand, has always been the funniest part of this film to me
Raul Duke also like when he said “as long as I got a voucher” (not in this clip) like someone told him you can give anything away as long as someone vouches for him
Every scene is a standalone bit, every time I watch the movie I have a new favorite by his smug laugh talking about how he “rigged it” Has always been one of my favorite perfect moments.
Totally agree!
He's so proud that he outwitted them .
You sad basket get a life
It doesn't matter who you are or what generation you are from, this bit is universally funny.
“We’ll take the money in your pocket!”
“Surrrre, I’ll just put it on the card.”
Trinidad Silva is the one in the knit hat. You may remember him from UHF when he taught poodles how to fly.
I love how that church just splits right open like the parade float in Animal House lol.
He's so confident that he stopped them lol 🤣
Why not it worked in the movie...."Yeah, they're gonna be here for a while, uh huh, don't worry, I've rigged it".....LMAO
"Um, they might not be here when you get back, but it's a Blue Chevy two-door, and it'd be going south on Hurtado Street. No, I can't make out the license number but......it'd be pulling a small church, so any blue Chevy pulling a small church, Yeah I figure that would be the one, yeah. Uh-huh."
orbison classic pure classic!!
we just want some gas mo chacho
I was just getting ready to leave this exact comment
😂😂😂
RIP Carl Reiner
I love the part at 2:05 where he walks back to the phone all cool and suave.
that is a 1970-72 monte carlo with 1977 headlights
I like how the groom's are trying to hold the man getting married back from jumping off they're trying to save him from Marriage LOL
Friendliest robbery ever! :)
It's Missus Nausbsumb's credit card!
You know, in this clip he did do everything right. It's not his fault the other guys had a care with the torque of a monster truck.
Thats the same car Ramon used in the movie Boulevard Nights filmed also in 1979, beautiful 1972 Monte Carlo
Oh no, you stopped the clip before the punchline of the whole gag!
I hate that
Yeah, what was the damn purpose?
Brilliant punchline too
Left out the best part. When he describes to the police the sedan towing a church
Haha! The random guy that just pops up at 0:58 on the left.
+Tennessee Beauty Well spotted. Who was that guy?
kev3d that was a ghost caught on tape.
@@kev3d someone going to the church. The bell is ringing
He saw that trick in American Graffiti !
1:56 You just won a free oven mitt!!
:27 I love how he acts sophisticated lmfao
I always thought this scene was odd because he just glances at a newspaper for a second and immediately sees the credit card is stolen.
No ,back in the day when gas stations took their own credit cards they issued monthly stolen card reports and they were printed on what looked like newspaper so when you ran a card you had to check the report to see if it had been reported stolen this is a fact, its not a newspaper it a service station stole card report
Damn that Monte Carlo has power
Future president of texaco oil
Love the cool confidence at the end
you won a free oven mitt! hilarious
what happening to my special purpose
1:53 is my favorite part of the whole movie.
You know something?! That's not a bad idea! Hooking something from a car, whose driver and passengers rob you on the spot, into some part of a building like a church?! That ought to teach those robbers a lesson!
Harry Hartounian had his first name changed to Jack in Caddyshack II and that driver was his Spanish co-worker!
Continuity mistake, the gas pump is still in the car when he runs to the church, when comes back to close the trunk, it's removed.
" I am MEESTER Nuesbaum!"
"You've won a free... oven mitt!"
He did great in this movie I still watch in 2022.
Ending the video before the punchline? You guys really need some new editors!
and the cut out the few second of the beginning too
The groom almost slipping off the altar makes the scene.
American Graffiti!
That looks like Ramon's '72 Chevrolet Montecarlo from Boulevard Nights
my mom and I are watching this movie tonight, and had to rewind the dvr atleast 5 times to see 2:05 again and again. Classic.
1:57 - This would make a FANTASTIC meme.
The same Monte Carlo from the movie Boulevard Nights
Mr Nussbaum #lmfao you want a free oven mitt 😂😂
The spark on top of the church 🤣
where can I buy a car horn like that?
"Mr. Nussbaum" so smart
Don’t worry officer it’s obvious how to spot them.
They also stole half a wedding.
Top favorite movie of all time! I still am curious WHO did he call to begin with? Was it the cops? I always thought it was some random person...such a funny scene!
I think it was the credit card company. He takes the card into the station and looks in a book of reported stolen credit cards and sees the credit card number. Another line. "Don't worry, I can keep them here! I saw this trick in a movie!" I'm thinking "American Graffiti" ?
So ya, any late model Chevy towing a small church….that would be the one .
WTF they cut it at the best part. Wanted to hear him say you cant miss it, the car will be pulling a small church haha
Fun fact, the guy in the passenger seat played Raul Hernandez of Raul’s Wild Kingdom in Weird Al’s UHF. Just confirmed on IMDB
I just realized the same when watching the end credits and saw Silva's name as a "punk". I had to watch this again since I wasnt sure which scene even had "punks", and now I can't believe I missed him when I saw this earlier.
I never knew Frog from Colors was in this movie. RIP Trinidad Silva
this clip is so awesome
I would wait for a free oven mitt
The driver looks like he is wearing safety glasses as if he forgot to take them off while using a table saw.
"Yes sir Mr. Nussbaum..."
My favorite of all time!!
They're really socking it to us!
Him Running, enough said
The cops are not coming...
Oven mitt!!!
“I rigged it”😏
Wow. It's Angel fernandez from scar face. The guy who gets killed with a chain saw.
You're right!

Well they don't make em very good
Jeez you guys cut the best line of the whole scene.
You guys want to stick around for an oven mitt?
Nahhh!
Why didn't the guys in the car stop when they realized they were dragging something?
Who else notices that the groomsmen are trying to save the groom from marriage to a woman who looks old enough to be his mother... possibly old enough to be his grandmother?
Anyone with eyes.
Same monte carlo in boulevard nights............
did not see that coming
Anyone know what the horn sound is called at :10?
DaddySinister El Pipiripau horn

What kind of car is that!????
1975 Chevy Monte Carlo
its a 70-72 monte carlo with 1977 headlights
72 Monte Carlo. You can tell the year by the turn signal light on the grille. The 70-71 had them on the bumper.
