  • St Andrew’s Hospital was a mental health facility in Thorpe St Andrew in Norwich. It was said to be the oldest mental hospital in Britain. Originally opening as the Norfolk County Asylum in May 1814, wings to the ward blocks were added in 1849 and a large auxiliary building for chronic patients was completed in 1881. The hospital was requisitioned for military use as the Norfolk War Hospital during WW1 and was then renamed the Norfolk County Mental Hospital in 1919. The hospital joined the National Health Service as St Andrew’s Hospital in 1948. After the introduction of Care in the Community in the early 1980s, the hospital went into a period of decline and closed in April 1998. After closure the original site to the south was turned into housing. The remaining annexe site was placed up for sale and continued to be partially used as offices until 2013 before it was sold and partially demolished. Today only the central section of the auxiliary building remains. The water tower along with the mortuary behind to the north also survive. Since its abandonment this site has become a hotspot for urban explorers with many reporting an oppressive and unwelcoming feeling inside the old annexe building. Some claim to have experienced poltergeist type activity with stones and debris being thrown by unseen forces along with inexplicably loud bangs in a seemingly empty building. Previous employees speak of strange phenomena being commonplace with shadow figures witnessed along with the unexplainable movement of objects. One spirit still said to reside here is a faceless grey lady spirit believed to be a nurse who was badly burnt in WW2. A long forgotten burial ground hidden away on the former hospital site is thought to contain the bodies of over 1,000 unmarked graves. Shallow indents in the ground are the only marker for the souls buried here.

    I live down the road from this site. Thanks for sharing information. What a shame about the number of unmarked graves here. An area with a dark past. R.I.P. to all those patients who lived a tormented life.

      Thank-you for commenting. It is strange old place with the old annexe building and morgue just standing isolated on waste ground. Very sad that there are over one thousand unmarked graves here of former patients on the old burial ground.

      @@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk It was full of elderly people when I worked there. functional and organic mental illness. I worked on ward 2 i think it was called and it was definately spooky, patients used to say they had seen people in their rooms which many staff members put down to mental illness but I mostly believed them...
      Myself and a colleague used to wander around with pendulums on the night shift and ask spirits to speak to us, the pendulum used to swing wildly, one night as we asked this question all the lights went off one after the other down the corridor towards us and this rush of air and like whispering sounds went through us.. 😳 we actually screamed and ran back to the office lol.. another time as we asked the question all the big heavy doors down the corridor swung shut and they were held open by electricity like proper fire doors..
      One night i was resting on a spare bed on my break and woke up to see a women in an old fashioned nurses outfit coming through the door...
      Im sure there are many other things that happened.. I had similar experiences at hellesdon hospital too..
      Great video thanks for the memories 😀

    This is so beautifully shot, so interesting and fascinating to read and learn about St Andrews. It certainly looks very abandoned, eerie and haunted, i would still love to explore inside though. It's very beautiful to look at the water tower is spectacular but i can imagine there is some creepy ghosts haunting inside. Wow, lobotomys are so crazy to think of. and that footage inside the asylum with the rock is pretty mad! wow! Another thought provoking and interesting video, thank you HAAN!

      Thank-you for taking the time to comment much appreciated. This remaining annexe building certainly has an eerie vibe to it. It just stands isolated partly demolished on waste-ground looming over the abandoned morgue behind. This section was used as the male ward before being requisitioned as the War Hospital during World War 1 and later also helping those badly injured in World War 2. Thanks again for your interest 🙂

  • @childrenoftheboneyard2465

    One of the closest asylums to me, would have loved to have seen it before they knocked the majority of it down. Funny I never put two and two together that other building was the morgue. Really cool video, thanks for sharing 👏🏻☺️

      Thank-you for taking the time to comment. It is a shame the vast majority of the annexe complex which was added later to the original asylum has been largely destroyed. The central section of the large annexe building has strangely been left completely alone with the surrounding and adjoining buildings knocked down. There it now stands isolated on wasteland watching over the old morgue in the distance behind. Definitely an eerie place - thanks again and appreciate the feedback.

    A fascinating, atmospheric video. I appreciate the depth of your research and the fantastic footage and photographs you have been able to source. I often used to drive past the hospital, and it always seemed such a daunting, sad place to me. I cannot imagine what it was like to be an inmate there in days gone by. I'm wondering whether any residents who now live there since the refurbishment have experienced any paranormal activity?

    • @HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk
      @HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk  Před rokem +1

      Thanks so much for the complimentary comments 🙂. Many staff who worked in the building have been in touch with me sharing their paranormal experiences although I haven’t heard from anyone now living in the original plot which has since been changed into luxury housing. The abandoned annexe building pictured is a very eerie place. The central section has just been left derelict on wasteland and the morgue behind this building is very spooky too. An atmospheric place with a somewhat unwelcoming oppressive vibe - sad to think many patients possibly suffered quite badly here.

      @@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk I am surprised to get a reply,so thank you.👍. I noticed that the back extensions had been demolished too. There was an occupational therapy room and a snooker room in those areas. Overall,I think it a shame the whole system got changed. Psychiatric care in the community has been a total failure as many people are left without proper care or support whilst a few developers have made millions out of old property. Talk of ghosts, I would not like to live on the South side, there were some underground parts of that,that were not comfortable at all.

    • @HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk
      @HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Yes such a shame about the many of the buildings being demolished - some of the older original buildings have since been turned into housing. I can imagine the underground areas are very spooky given the history of the site. The old morgue does survive though along with the central annexe. Thanks again for your interest 🙂

    I explored this hospital in about 1999 maybe 2000 - it was winter and it definitely has a creepy vibe there. One of the strange things was that I found the remains of a bonfire outside where people had been burning VHS tapes (close to the large tree on the right of the entrance). One of the surviving tapes was One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, and the other was Evil Dead - very appropo. I poften wondered what had happened to the building, so I really appreciate the video. I seem to rememmber that the back of the hospital faced out to some pretty bleak Norfolk countryside, but heck, that could be anywhere in Norfolk!

      Yes the asylum been closed a fair while now - the surviving annexe building (pictured) was requisitioned for use during the First World War and later used as the male ward. It continued to be sporadically used as an office space until 2013 despite the fact the asylum closed in 1998. Only the central part of the annexe building remains along with the morgue behind it. The original asylum buildings have been sympathetically turned into housing. Thanks for your interest 🙂
