  • Recognizing the need for better food access in the communities they serve, Virtua Health created several programs as part of its Eat Well initiative, including a mobile farmer’s market and a free Food Farmacy for eligible patients. The newest addition is the Eat Well Mobile Grocery Store, which they built using a donated New Jersey Transit bus and launched in early 2020.

This is a great idea to alleviate food deserts until a permanent fix can be found.

Check your local requirements to get a mobile vendor and food safety licenses, or if you need any. (many places require them) Find an old city bus for sale, if it's a low floor model, even better, gut it, and fit it with shelves and refrigerators for the food items. Some buses may have an empty space in the back above the engine compartment where you can fit a generator or a solar battery system to run the refrigerators, lights and other equipment inside.
