Convai GDC Demo: Stormgate Free-form Mission Briefings

  • In collaboration with Convai, we are experimenting with the idea of interactive AI characters in Stormgate. This would be in combination with existing pre-scripted and human voice acted scenarios that we are already working on including in the game.
What if you could have a conversation with a character in Stormgate's universe ahead of your next mission? Asking questions about your objectives and gaining more backstory behind a core villain, for example? In this demonstration, we show you what that could look like.
Taking one of our characters from Stormgate's announcement cinematic, Tara Reade - A Xenoarchaeologist, Convai converted her into an Unreal 5 Metahuman asset, training her with some of our lore and character backstory information.
We then have a simple conversation with her, asking some questions about an upcoming mission via voice chat.
A.I. technology and the conversation around it is quickly evolving. At Frost Giant, if we ever decide to implement this technology, we would first need to make sure it makes the game more fun, feels immersive, and also has the blessing of the actors union. For now, we hope you enjoy this experiment, and be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Why not both? The one thing does not has to exclude the other.
It can be like in SC2 where certain responses and main stories are "hardcoded" but if you wanna ask any other question about whatever interests you, you can
Its absolutely not there to beat anything, you see that so wrong. The games story is not interactive but a well written, intentional story but for side dialogue it offers limitless opportunities.

I see it more of an addition to well written intentional stories. Sure resources are finite, but the AI wouldn't even need that much. I don't know about the mission briefing but imagine the sc2 NPCs on the hyperion all being able to have conversations with you. Instead of uninspired one liners you could actually talk with them about the last mission or whatever else is happening in the story. Could be amazing.

Yeah I'm kind of on the same boat as others, I just want to be told a story and keep it straight forward with some hand written, voice acted dialog exploration (aka Wings of Liberty where you can chat with Raynor, Horner, Tychus) and they feed you some back story, or builds up a characters mystery or motive. I enjoyed exploring the dialog, especially since I was a Raynor fan boy as a kid in Broodwar up to Wings of Liberty.

AI voice software still feels like an incomplete technology and comes of as very uncanny.
There’s no doubt that such technology will be able to do this flawlessly in the future, but it’s certainly not ready for this right now.

Okay, the example provided does not strike me as prompts a user would make. Expect users to try to get the AI off topic, talk about ridiculous stuff, etc. Could be fun, but probably outside of its intended function.
I also think it looks fairly sterile. I think that can be solved by not using a humanoid will full body animation. An adjutant like robot with fitting voice is an obvious choice, or a voice in your head kind of deal for other races if applicable. Think that would vastly improve the presentation.
That said, this should not be more than your mission briefing person. A storyline should also be present and voice by real actors imo. If you make an adjutant thing to talk to, and if its worth the effort, sure why not. Im neither for nor against. Could be a fun novel toy. Make sure it accepts text prompts though, mics aren't a given.
Now, this thing would be amazing for singleplayer though, if you could talk to your ai allies ingame to communicate strategy. That would be super awesome and more than just a quirky novelty for mission briefing, such campaign ai would make stormgate really stand out.

I'm not sure this comment will be read by the developers at all, but!
Generative AI is a contentious topic due to the quality of the output, the safety of data to which the AI has access, the (at times) heavy resource cost of training and running such an AI, and not least the compensation and rights of performers and developers on the project. While it is a comfort to hear the team's concern on the last point, it's far from any concrete plan to work with a union and establish a provisional contract.
That said, assuming the best in terms of accessibility, safety and performance, it would make sense to present the AI as just that: as a machine intelligence, the players interacting with an entity similar to Starcraft's Adjutant. Having a robotic assistant, or even some kind of machine faction might make it a little easier to play with, and the occasional nonsensical output easier to rationalize. I think in that way the team can present this idea and at least not come off as underhanded, trying to "sneak one under the table" and deliver what some might immediately disregard as substandard, hackneyed work --- even if these projects are no simple task, and to imagine this kind of stuff being capable 30 years ago would have sounded insane.
So, it *is* a neat idea, it *will* have some stumbling blocks, but I'm hoping if it is seen in the game, it's presented as an AI *character* (rather than just including "convai" above the captions) so we have diagetic feedback that the output might be wonky or unpolished. Also, allowing for text-based input would be very nice!

I can only see bad scenarios coming from this, such as the AI getting confused and giving inaccurate information and lore regarding your setting or the following level, which again, can simply be mitigated by not using it in the first place.

This could really be great for a lore robot by leaning into the roboticness of it; voices in the style of the female robot in the SC2 command centre, or for horror games Shodan or GLaDOS.
But it really feels like it would only work for dry emotonless info dumps (like lore or mission briefings) otherwise think for real people, emotive performances, and writing the technology nowhere near good as the real thing yet.

Don't worry if it doesn't look too compelling. This is a marketing stunt. They just need to get on the AI hype train. I can imagine it could be useful for example in the actual match where you would be like. "F*** what is this damn thing killing my units? How do I counter it?" And this fella shows in the bottom like. "Hi there, you can build X to punish them for massing one unit type." Now that's a useful AI feature!

95% of the comments are missing the point. This is not replacing the written story narrative nor is it replacing the voice actors in important moments of the game. Its literally just that you can talk to a character before a mission and ask it questions about the game and the story in case you forgot something or are interested in a more detailed description. Just like when games have all the "what is this" dialogue options but you can ask about anything. Another thing people are saying is that it sounds and looks unnatural well no shit this is a technical demo from a pre alpha game. If they put it in the game, you can safely assume it will look and sound better. Very cool idea IMO although most players will probably not ask anything so idk if its worth the development time.

I think it would be a really cool way to put in an AI robot helper sidekick into the game. Would actually make it feel immersive like you were actually talking and getting help from them.
But for an RTS i dont see this more than a gimick. Unless the annoucer was the ai and actually giving you dynamic call outs based on what you had vision of the battle field. Something that couldn't be scripted. I personally wouldnt appreciate the amount of time and money it will cost to make it good.

Implementing an AI writer would still require a competent writer to edit and tweak the lines, in which case why not just have the writer write a compelling story? The example provided sounds stilted more than anything, and feels more like an in-world wikipedia text-to-speech than a character with a conversation.

I know people HATE anything AI related (I'm mostly in the same boat), but not all of it so bad. In this case, if it's just an additional feature instead of a total replacement than I think makes it more acceptable. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit curious to play around with it, it could be fun. Although, I can already imagine that the AI reactions will be rather lifeless or buggy.

I feel like this tech coukd be better user as a way to have the players interact with their adjutant. IE, in-game, you ask your adjutant to tell you how many workers are idle and it responds. You ask it a specific build order suggestion and it responds. But dialogue options? Nah, I don't feel the tech is there quite yet, and I totally see this devolving into people asking weird questions and saying really spicy and NSFW things.

A massive scope of player agency is vital for a successful RTS. It also requires tight narrative control in order to keep the game's story impactful.

  • @skipp3252
    @skipp3252 Před 5 měsíci

I think this tech has incredible potential but this was a poor use case of it. I feel like a mission brief like this would always be significantly better if it is pre written by a human. However AI NPC conversation can be an incredible tool for immersion in between missions. Being able to have conversations with characters about whats going on in the world sounds really interesting. I'm thinking about the NPCs on the Hyperion in the Wings of Liberty campaign for instance. A lot of them give you comedic or mildly interesting one-liners when you click on them. But imagine you could have a lengthy conversation with Ariel Hanson about her commitment to the colonists and how she thinks a Zerg virus could be cured. That might influence my decision about the Haven mission and could make the consequences of that decision much more impactful. Or just having a very interesting conversation with Stetmann about the artifact. You could talk to Swann and learn more about his past with Raynor. The possibilities are endless.

I think it need more work to feel a bit more natural (as is the case with most generative AIs) and also would suggest that an AI character, someone from a command console or something is powered by Ai, like terrans adjutant or something rather than a humanoid person in game being voiced by ai and giving mission briefings.

While I appreciate that you specifically called out the concern of making sure the voice actor get's paid appropriately; A.I development and A.I training in art spaces is an extremely touchy subject right now, mainly because the companies that are pushing them use so much stolen or misappropriated art, images, and voices to train their algorithms. The only ethical way I can see this working is if you designed your own from the ground up and paid everyone used in the training of it, as well as the actor who it's emulating. And I don't think that'd be worth the effort when dialogue trees already solve this problem well enough, while also giving the Voice Actor the ability to properly emote.

Imagine you can have a companion throughout the whole campaign to which you can talk to about your experiences during missions, findings etc. It remembers everything you have talked about with it previously, and can refer back to previous findings at any point in the story. That is a concept that is worth exploring and will definitely be in many games in the coming years.

Do you think this might lead to conflicting information between different players' games? On one hand it could be cool to see how different players' game worlds are explained differently by the characters (sort of a mark of the unique impression the player makes on their game world). On another, I wonder about the possibility of inconsistencies between player's experiences that make story info in new chapters conflict with the info theyve been given through the course of their sprawling conversations.
