Product comparisons are great but I would akin this to comparing a Corvette Z06 to a Camaro LT. Both sports cars? Yes, but vastly different. The Moleskine showed here is comparable to the Leuchtturm1917 softcover A5. For an accurate hardcover comparison the Moleskine would need to be the Professional version.
The elastic band on any soft cover book will be loose. If it is tight then the book curls.
The soft skin books also tend to be used for stuffing or adding pieces inside. If the elastic is too tight it's like an older rotund gentleman with a too tight Speedo. It tends to slide off if you know what I mean. :)
The hard cover Moleskine Professional has a preprinted index with page numbers and all pages well, of course have page numbers. This is extremely handy. I loath going back to write the page numbers. The pages of the MP version is also laid out in a format that is very hand for journaling and bullet journalling in particular. It also has a separate section with tear way to do list. Epic.
I'm a minimalist when it comes to journals. I don't want to have to spend a lot of time with set up. I'm an art director for a printing company so it's not that I'm adverse to creativity, I just like my journals to be clean and efficient so anything that can set up as part of the book is handy.
I've owned several Leuchtturm1917 books and they are wonderful. The orange color steals my heart. In no way do I think one is better than the other quality wise. I will say that Moleskine has more options and sizes available but that is all dependent upon one's needs. I also own the Adobe Creative Cloud version so I can upload story broads from meetings. From what I understand the Evernote version is really nice but these are very specialized journals.
To be fair I felt the comparison should have been of two comparable items from both brands.
I love Moleskine but I wish they would offer the Pro with a dotted layout rather than ruled. Ruled doesn't work for more freeform setups like Bullet Journal very well.

you didn't compare the same notebooks, you should have used the moleskin professional which would have been a fair apples to apples comparison.....

I think the looser band on the Moleskine is so the book can expand once it's stuffed full of ephemera, paintings, etc. since the Moleskine is known for being a favourite amongst art journalers.
+Melissa Angelik i agree. i also think it is a looser band because it is a soft cover. (the one in the video, that is). i had stopped using my moleskine journal for a while and it stared getting crooked, even though its band was somewhat loose.
In the way you're talking about the moleskine I get the feeling that you already prefer the leuchtturm and that disappoints me.. Would love to see a new review with the hardcover Moleskine, you'll see its an amazing notebook ;)

I got the feeling right away you already preferred the Leuchtturm to the Moleskine. I also agree that if there was a hardcover version of the Moleskine, you should have used the hardcover to compare with the Leuchtturm. I think the sports car analysis is a pretty good one. That said, I did like your editing and filming style. It was a well made video. Thank you for sharing.
There is a version of the moleskine which is a hardcover.

Anna Morris you have to remember that Moleskines are VERY expensive, especially the hard covers. it's also very difficult to track down hardcover dot-grid Moleskines.
my dad has been using Moleskines since he was my age, they're fantastic, but they're not affordable at all.

I LOVE your videos and style. I just have one problem, it's an issue with many CZcams videos. It's the background music, for me it's impossible to listen to a loop of music for 3 min+ (I have a really low tolerance, I know.) I always suggest classical music because it's lengthy, if you can get your hands on some that you can afford the license on of course. Otherwise silence isn't always bad either. Anyway, I had never expected you only started CZcams fairly recently. I figured you where a prominent figure in the planning community I just discovered. The quality of your work is so high, my gosh YESH! Well done! Love, your most recent subby. xxx PS. I use a Sigel conceptum btw and love it, the quality of the book is so high and it's so sturdy and it's a few euro's cheaper then moleskine.

Moleskine for life! Love 'em and the fact that its not numbered or have a table of contents is not a big deal. I like that Moleskine wears really nicely and gets a cool weathered look after tons of use :) Never used a L1917 though...but if it ain't broke, don't fix it is my motto!

+iseezombies82 Moleskine's ok. Not great, not bad with the made in China paper that varies from batch to batch. For use with fountain pens, a Rhodia Webnotebook beats it hands down.
But newer moleskines have so-so paper which is really thin. Using fountain pens is a pain now.
My Rhodia leaks when used by a fountain too.
Except moleskin is now produced I'm china. The paper is now thinner and quality of notebooks has gone down
I think the reason she compared these two notebooks specifically was because at the beginning she said that these two are the more popular ones being used...which makes sense for her to compare them to each other. I was also looking at these two specific notebooks and wondering which to buy, so I found this really helpful
this video is really biased towards the leuchtturm notebook :D if you're deciding on the notebook you are picking up, i suggest you watch an impartial and unbiased video on it. which this is not.
I agree. she uses a soft cover moleskine vs a hard covered leuchtturm and doesn't realize that moleskine is available in both soft and hard covered. the "flimsiness of the band is so that once the notebook is full the band is expandable

Exactly what I thought! She didn't even get the hardcover moleskin.
For me it would be how the pen writes on the paper and the quality of the paper (fading, durability) you guys love your stationery!! 😎🤓😎🤓😎I am more of a gel pen enthusiast.

I believe the Moleskine elastic is loose so it doesn't cause the soft cover to fold over on itself. It's actually really well thought out.
What's the point of having calligraphy pens if you use them like regular ballpoint pens :(

I am just starting this and for a few days now I have been playing around on some paper that has the squares in the back of another planner. Now I'm trying to decide what notebook to get. You've helped a lot. Very thorough reviews of the notebooks. I really like the paper with the squares so I hope I can get used to the dots.
There are also Moleskine with a hardcover and Leuchtturm with a softcover. And the Moleskin's loose band is connected to the "history" - put everything you want in your notebook (so after few months you really need that loose band or you cannot put it on the cover of the notebook).
I got both of them and agree that paper is better in Leuchtturm, especially if you write by pen...
I have used both notebooks. Prefer the L_1917 but moleskine does have hard cover notebooks that are very nice.
Not really a fair comparison as Moleskine has a 240 page hard cover notebook which is v similar to your l..l... nope. I can't spell it. They're about the same price mark as well but no index and only one bookmark but there is a "professional" Moleskine that offers more. These soft cover Moleskines are intended for stuffing and so theyre super flexible. But you're biased to it anyway, you sounded just generally more enthusiastic about the.. the... one I can't spell. :') interesting none the less! nice to see more inside the books

Yeah, I don’t quite get the comparison this video is attempting to make. This features a Moleskine cahier, which goes for about $6. Comparing that to a Leuchtturm1917, which retails at literally 5x the cost is kind of odd. Especially when Moleskine has other offerings that *are* comparable. A video outlining the difference between the Leuchtturm1917 and a Moleskine hard cover notebook would be more helpful.

Thank you for the comparison, which was exactly what I was looking for. I have a Moleskine journal (in soft version) as my current journal and I just recently bought myself my first Leuchtturm, so this video helped. :) I do agree, that for better comparison, it might be better to use both journals in the same (hard cover) version, but for my current situation, perfect information. :)
I love that you say right at the start any notebook will serve well to bullet journaling. Even if most " journalers" prefers these two bullet journaling is much about organize and have a visual way to look into your own system, or ditch whatever don't work for you. Thanks for that.

The way all the english and american CZcamsrs pronounce Leuchtturm bothers me so much...it sounds like an english word, I guess it's quite interesting to see how brands are just pronounced differently in different countries...but still

I've been living in Germany for many years and yes, Leuchtturm is supposed to be pronounced like: "Loykt-turm" (that's the closest you can get with English phonetics. The German CH is a very guttural sound that is impossible to imitate for native English speakers. It kind of sounds like the sound that you'd make if you were to clear your throat aggressively.)
Moleskine is pronounced the same as everywhere else though.
Can you guys teach me how to pronounce my favorite vacuum brand?!? Miele - is it meeelah or mileh or mielee??

I've used Moleskines for my last several notebooks; they also come in hardcovers. I'm a calligrapher, and with the graph/squared A5 I use for calligraphy practice, the feathering and bleed-through are so bad that I use a piece of Tyvek cut from a mailer between the pages, or else ink will bleed through several pages at a time. I got a Moleskine with Art paper, which is quite thick and does not feather or bleed through, but there aren't as many pages per notebook and it costs a lot more. Now I've ordered a Leuchtturm1917. I actually got a journal to start a bujo. It is the "essentials" from amazon, it's 12 $ CAD (approx 10 USD), and it's a hardcover one, there is a pocket at the end and there are more than 200 pages, they are not numeroted but it is not a big deal, same for the index! You just do it yourself (; There is an elastic too. The pages are pretty white and thick! It's less expensive than the leuchtturm and it works reaaaally well! I can be an alternative if you don't want to pay more.

I really appreciate your comparative video. I've recently been looking into getting some Moleskine's and I was searching some reviews on YT when this video popped up. I hadn't heard of Leuchtturm1917, but I think now that I have I'll go with this brand instead.
I wish Leuchtturm made their softcover notebooks in more colours! I prefer the layout and quality of the Leuchtturm but use a softcover Moleskine purely because it weighs less and I can take it with me wherever I go.

Very nice review with a very thorough comparison! It was great to see the various pens tests with both notebooks. I have only used Moleskine so far and was on the fence as to whether or not I would switch to Leuchtturm, which I like a lot for its true A5 format. Seeing its paper performance with various inks has now convinced me that it will definitely be my next notebook! Thanks for sharing :)

Really like your videos! One thing that bugs me about these notebooks is that the companies don't specify the paper wieght... I don't like ghosting or bleedthrough so I'm always looking for a notebook that has at least 85gsm... So if anyone knows of a dotted notebook with 85gsm paper I'm all ears!! Thanks for your videos they are inspiring and I like that you incorporate cool ideas like the Gratitude Log and Memories of the month.. really cool!! Keep em comin'!
Fer Jen i need thicker paper too! I hate when i can see what I wrote on the other side when I turn the page. I feel like I can't use every other page. Please let me know if you found a good one!
Hi! I agree - I do a lot of mixed media and want a thicker paper that will take the weight of what I put on the pages. But gsm doesn't always give a fair representation either. For example, Copic has a marker pad with 70 gsm paper that doesn't bleed at all and I've used 145 gsm cardstock which bled through like tracing paper... So I guess an actual test is the only way to be certain if an ink will bleed through or not.

Love the comparison! Considering starting a bullet journal while learning brush lettering and this definitely helps a lot! Quick question though, I noticed the sound the brush pen made on the Moleskine, and I'm a bit OCD about sounds like that, it makes me feel like the pen doesn't flow on the paper as nicely :/ you silenced the writing part for the Leuchttern haha, so just wondering does the brush pen make the same sound on the Leuchtterm?
I just bought a hard-covered, squared Moleskine for my first bullet journal, and I'm definitely happy with it, but after watching this I'm interested in trying the Leuchtturm next for the paper quality and page numbers if anything. This is a great comparison video though, very in depth which is awesome!

i have a Moleskine journal and i notice in the using of mine that the pages swell. the journal gets thicker as each page is used, no matter the pens used or colored pencils, of which i use frequently. the elastic band gets tighter as the journal is used.
So others have commented on this as well, but a fairer comparison would have been between softcover versions or (more appropriate, since most use them) hardcover version. There is also a great notebook in the A5 format sold by Peter Pauper Press which is in between the two in many ways qualitatively, and far cheaper (about $10-$11 on Amazon, depending on when you buy). I'm a Leuchtturm girl myself, in part because I am from Germany and in part because I just really like that they have proper A4/A5/A6, etc. sizing. I would love the Moleskine if they just changed their sizing so that it would match my other books on the bookshelf. I'm a bit OCD about that. ;-) In particular, I use a combination system with a weekly planner book and a blank book, rather than having to do calendars in my blank book. I LOVE the Little Prince series of weekly planners by Moleskine, but I've stopped using them because their sizing is off and doesn't match my blank Leuchtturm and Peter Pauper Press journals.

A moleskine hard cover notebook has a much better quality band and has 240 pages.mI know that moleskine do not have dotted hard cover notebook, but still... Bullet journal has to be dotted? Is dotted notebook better? I am just curious. But I loved the review anyway, please do more like that! I would love to try Leuchturm, but in my country (Hungary) stores have moleskine only and Leuchturm would be double price if I order it online. :(

I've always gone for moleskines at Barnes & Nobel but I only heard of leuchtturm from boho berry. Moleskines are easier to get, but I was always looking for something more from them and leuchtturm gave me that. The hard cover moleskine just isn't built to get beat up in a book bag and doesn't seem to lie as flat when open. Plus the paper is different. If you want something that will last awhile go leuchtturm; if you want something that you can get tired of in 2 months, get moleskine

I've just bought my first bullet journal, but I went with a Moleskin. I had great trouble finding the other brand and when I did, it was so expensive.
I have a hardcover Moleskine with a fabric cover and I love it! Better for the environment (maybe?) than a leather one. The band is not loose. There are no numbers on the bottom of the page so I have no idea how many pages there are. It does have a big pocket in the back. I kinda like the "as a reward" because I always put something funny there and it starts the journal off in a creative, fun way. Small differences between the two! Love em all!
I use a Hallmark Stationary Journal with 160 pages and I am very happy with it. The only problem with it I can find is the pages are thin and some of my pens bleed through. The expandable poket in the back is larger than both the molskine and the Leuchtturm.
Have you ever used the Erin Condren dot grid bound journal? It doesn't have an index or page numbers but I just ordered my first one anyway. I'm thinking of adding my own index and page numbers and using it as my next semesters school notebook instead of carrying around multiple notebooks. Wondering if you know anything about them. I don't know what to expect
Thank you so much for that interesting comparison between Leuchtturm1917 and Moleskine (that I don't know). But please could you make the same between Leuchtturm1917 (80g) and Rhodia goalbook (90g)? I have bought both, but don't know which one to choose... (because of the color of paper)! Your advise would be very welcome!
When you tested out all your inks/pens on the two notebooks, you mentioned feathering... Do you know what causes the feathering? In your experience, is it the ink or the paper, or a combination of the two?
Awesome review! Got my first LT1917 dot grid 2 mo. ago & loving it for all the reasons you stated. Previous notebook was a Baron Fig which I liked & wanted to love, but the LT1917 has all the extras that push it over the top, as you mention in this video. For the record, I've had many different notebooks (& cahiers) the past 10-15 years, including Moleskine -- & I now like LT1917 the best
+Andy Van Engen Thanks Andy! I have yet to find a notebook that tops the LT1917 in my opinion. I know there are others with even better paper quality, but the page numbers and bookmarks really push it over the top for me :)
Do you use the Staedtler Triplus Fineliners often? I like to think I take good care of my pens, but I bought those pens a while ago and they dried out so fast ):
Did you mention at the start comparing how well they lay open on the table when working? Curious about this. I have worked in spiral notebooks because I like how they lay flat ( but not the intrusiveness of the metal spiral.) Wondering how well these lay open? Heading over to the give-away - very nice! +Kwilts54 Oh my goodness, totally meant to comment on that towards the end! I'm going to do a little video on how to "break in" your notebooks so that they lay flat soon. As far as these two notebooks go, yes they both lay flat once broken in properly :)

Just thought I would threw in another option for people like me who are broke. I am currently using a Piccadilly and it is working out great! The only bad thing is that unlike the moleskein or Leuchttrum the Piccadilly only have the grid paper in black and no dots as of yet; however they are only 6 bucks bucks at Barnes and Noble compared to the 20 the moleskein costs. (At least at my Barnes and noble).

Thanks for the informative video! I will say that I have the same Moleskine that you do in this video and the elastic strap on mine is more taught and snaps when I pull it up. Just a heads up that some may be a bit looser than others for people looking! :)

It would've been nice to have seen the Leuchtturm 1917 (A5) compared with the Moleskine XL instead. With the XL measuring 7.5 X 9.75 IN (versus 5.71 X 8.27 IN for the A5) it would've been a much fairer comparison, at least format-wise.
Have you tried putting water color on the Leuchtturm journal? Does it bleed through?

There are softcover Leuchtturm notebooks, too. Almost like the Moleskine.
There are also hardcover Moleskines.
I've been using Moleskine notebooks for over 20 years as my primary work notebook. I love it's form factor, compact, plenty of pages, and cool minimalistic look and feel. I switched over to Leuchtturm about 7 years ago, because of it's fountain pen friendly paper, no ink bleeding through the paper. I do find it a little bulkier than the Moleskine A5 size, but you do get about 60 more pages (249 vs 192) which is a nice bonus. I think the Leuchtturm is a better value too. With Moleskine, I found Montblanc permanent black and blue fountain pen ink works well with the paper. No bleed through and feathering. I wonder if Montblanc developed their permanent ink with Moelskine in mind. I wish Moleskine would improve it's paper, then I would come back.
Not sure if you've mentioned - for the leuchtturm do you prefer using the dotted, lined or gridded ones? I can't decide which one to get!

as far as leuchtturm sketchbooks go they're not the strongest at handling the majority of art supplies that differ from pencil and pen. whereas moleskine offer a much stronger sketchbook with firmer paper that(as far as I know) can handle most art supplies. to evaluate leuchtturms are the professional planner whereas moleskine, as well as offering an alternative, win on artistic grounds.
Agreed. Leuchtturm also has a sketchbook line that's more suited to mixed media :)

I just received my very first lemon yellow Leutchtturm in the mail yesterday. It's so unbelievably gorgeous. I had watched tons and tons of videos before buying it to make sure it was the one but actually holding it and flipping through was such a treat. I'm switching over from the new Recollections horizontal spiral planner and I'm so nervous to start because I don't want to ruin this gem lol. That being said, I do think Moleskine makes some good products as well, definitely hit or miss. I loved their cahiers for my Midori but hated the sketchbook I got from them.

So lately I have been wanting to get more organized. Two of my friends just recently got their own bullet journals. I really want to create a journal like this but im not too sure where to start. I want a nice journal that will last me a while but i need to make sure to get the right one because i really don't want to waste money on a journal that doesn't work very well. I think im leaning towards getting the Leuchtturm 1917 but i want to be 100% sure before i buy it. Plus i have pretty sloppy handwriting should i even bother doing this? And if so, with my sloppy handwriting should i get dotted or squared? Which do you think would help everything look neater. Thank you and great video btw!! I subscribed!!
+Luisa Marie Thanks Luisa! Maybe you could try out the bullet journal system in whatever notebook you have laying around? Just see what you think of the system, and get familiar with it... decide what works/doesn't work for you before investing in a more expensive notebook? As far as the ruling of the paper... dotted or squared won't make your handwriting better or worse. That part is just all about practice :)

Does the Moleskine have the same number of dots as the Leuchturm down and across?? I'm thinking if they're the same length and width they should be similar in dots, but from downward view the Leuchturm seems bigger...
