I'm African and I'm totally against the idea of China taking more African immigrants. The engagement we as Africans need with China is investment in infrastructure, technology and industry in the African continent. This should be coupled with training and technology transfer to upskill the labour force here in Africa. The immigration policy will not benefit Africa in any way shape or form because African immigrants have an unfortunate tendency of staying permanently in their host country and that is not what Africa needs right now. We have suffered enough brain drain during the last few decades from educated and skilled Africans who left for Europe and America for opportunities but ended up becoming permanent citizens of those countries.
ideally that is what should happen, but china is never going to do that, they would never do anything that benefits any other country in the long run.

Africa needs its people to develop the continent. We need to stablize the political system in Africa and eliminate tribalism and ethnic conflict. China has more than enough people to develop the country for a long time to come. Africans need to build infrastructures on the continent . Develop technologies and businesses to rival other continents. We will never succeed if we keep going abroad and becoming 2nd class citizens in foreign countries.The brain drain in Africa is only hurting the continent.

Africa as a whole will surpass China and India in population. That'll be a massive pool of new surplus labor. But give the sheer size of China's workforce it'll never solve the issue. I live in Australia which has a high immigration rate and our population is only a fraction of China's but still we have "labor shortages". I can't imagine China will ever find enough workers to fill the gaps. Plus by the time China even considers such a policy it has to compete with Japan, S Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and maybe even Vietnam and Malaysia or Thailand who all have rapidly ageing populations.

Given a choice every African wants to flee the continent, it is not just hardship that they are fleeing, it is the brutality. The police and armies in Africa except for 1 or 2 countries, are some of the world's brutal and cruellest ever. They are awful, they get away with murder, gang rape as does happen in the DRC which is now the rape capital of Africa. They are fleeing the high crime rates, the tribalism person the nepotism which means you cannot get a job even if you are qualified but not connected to the upper echelons of society, they are fleeing the hopelessness endemic throughout the continent.... It is so depressing.. If Africa does not change it will just become a dumping ground where the world dumps whatever it is they have no use for. Africa needs a complete change of mentality. That changed mentsli6id what will bring the desperately needed reforms and transformation.
Strong Africa means strong potentials for the Trans-Atlantic economy powers and it also could benefits Europe. which US seems to be much trivialized because of their trades with China (cuz cheap labours duh) in Pacific corridors until politics divide them in 2017's and it getting worse in 2020's, such initiative like 'investment' (in good ways) by China should've lessen refugees flow from African and Mideast countries to Europe, unlike US, Russia, Saudis, UAE and Israel 'involvement' to these regions which seems add more flow of that to Europe and not improving anything 'stability' right in that region.
We African need to stay in Africa and develop our own independent counties we need to stop running away to places where we are discriminated and not wanted! We need to build up our own nations !

However, they are building Africa in such a way that Africans don't get uplifted and they keep dependent on China. In many of these infrastructure projects, you will always find that almost all junior and senior workers are Chinese and most Africans are employed as labors, in sales person, or in some kind of job that doesn't require practical experience. This will not help Africa in any case and although Africans will be benefited by these projects one day but do you really want to keep yourself dependent on China??

China will invest in AI, robotics, automation, any other possible ways to improve production of goods to replace a declining population. It will never resort to meaningful immigration from African countries to mainland China. I just don't think Africans should count on welcoming work visas or citizenship, that will never happen in their lifetime.

The Liberal West's idea of "open immigration" does in fact not address the core issue of declining birth rates. Why don't people want to have kids? As long as you don't fix this, then immigration can only be a temporary fix to slow down the inevitable. In 2-3 generations, the immigrant family's descendants return to the means of not having as many children as the old locals. Second, the idea of solving this solely through a readily supply of immigrants is actually a form of *imperialism* predicated on the fact that those poorer workers from developing countries must remain poor to continue supplying the richer countries. As Singapore's LKY puts it, the core issue is that our current economic system rewards people for being single consumers while punishes those who want to start families. To balance this, the late LKY suggested the state must provide support and welfare to the family as a unit (not the individual) for only several generations until the mentality shifts. Tangental to this social dynamic is the need for affordable housing and better education shifting the populace from a manufacturing economy to a service & information based one, combined with MORE automation. Rather than moving people from the Developing World to the Developed World, it is far more humane and morally correct to develop the developing world so people can CHOOSE to stay where they grew up in without forgoing better opportunities. (Most immigrants would actually prefer living in their home country if they could enjoy the same economic benefits).

I agree with your point, but are you implying that Singapore's circumstances differ from those of the "Liberal West"? From my observation, Singapore has a high cost of living and a steady inflow of affluent immigrants as well as both high and low-skilled workers.
China has gone through a lot of pain to reduce its population using one Child policy simply because people saw there is not enough farmland to support its population. Now you have achieved your goal of reducing the population. If you start to allow large-scale immigration of low-end foreign labor, it would not be acceptable for the population and government.

I am just being honest. China is NOT an immigration country like US. I don't mind to have some African merchants settling down in China due to long term trade and familiarity of the new home. It is similar to Africa taking in Chinese merchants who settle there after living there for a long time. But I really don't think China should take in Africans as migrants. As many people already said, China should focus in INVESTING in Africa so Africans can have better opportunity in Africa and build up Africa for their future.

Compared to many other countries, China's farm land per capita is still low, yet tens of thousands are waiting to get feed. At the same time manufacturing are moving to countries with lower cost, the tension between China and the US also accelerates the process which leads to possible higher unemployment rate. So I don't see a change of the immigration law in the near future.
Even if one day China needs immigration, Chinese ethnics in South East Asia will be the first option, not only the Han Chinese, but also Hmongs、Zhuang、Iu Miens、Akha、Lahu etc. They come back to China and it won't cause any social problem at all.
I doubt ethnic chinese from south east asia will want to live a democratic state to move to a totalitarian one. accepting in high fertility African men to help repopulate China with Chinese women will be the key to saving China from a population collapse.

China is not a welfare state, will not need to solve all the old age problem. Old folks either will work much longer or look after themselves. Many people are still working in early 80s. By then the younger generation will have more kids to look after them at old age. The vicious circle will self correct. Bringing in immigrants is short sighted and definitely cause major headaches in the future!
China doesn't need migrants to help with population decline. Even if half the Chinese disappeared overnight it still has about twice the amount of people as the US and with smaller space available. If the US can be the number one economy with way less people why can't China? Less population is better for sustainability. Jobs will be taken over by AI and automation soon enough. China only needs certain talents to fill in gaps as it sees fit.
That’s not as easy as that. An economy can’t change their economy which is related to its population. If china lose half its population, they will lose half its productivity, taxes, GDP.

Over the long term lowering the birthrate and population for China is still the answer for future generations to avoid having too many seniors. Having migrants isn't necessary when you're over populated to begin with and needs to reduce the amount of people. For now China has to deal with this big senior burden. Even in the US there's lots of immigrants but lots of the people are still being a "burden" in society and non productive and lots of people are saying the US social security and health and housing systems are falling apart. Every country has challenges to face with their people, choices to make, and how to deal with challenges. China is no exception.

I didn't think the shrinking population s a problem.. The so called aging population is another misunderstanding. The retirement age of China was 55 fo females and 60 for males. Therefore the retirement age for both can be easily raised to 65. The other factor not considered is technology advancements in automation and AI. Development in these fields has already started to replace some unskilled and skilled labour force. The population of China is already too big for it's resources to support. The population of China, as well as the whole world, cannot forever keep on expanding because the resources of China and the earth is finite and some non renewable..
resources are infinite but we will be out of work as most of it will be outsourced to machine and we have limited set of work based on our perception of environment in our head.

China's population can't grow indefinitely. There are constraints of resources like food, energy, and water. Automation to increase productivity will replace a lot of workers too. A little bit shrinking of population may be actually good for the long term. Regarding foreigners, China is helping their country to develop, hopefully they would be able to find works in their own country. Especially, China is starting outsourcing low skill jobs to their country as well.
Those constraints can be overcome
China could always bring in a limited set amount of temporary workers to do the jobs, provide them with a better income that they would get in their countries and then send them back. Interesting video! I am from South Africa and I worked in 5 Chinese cities over a ten year period. I am glad that some Africans have set up residence in China, in cities like Guangzhou, but the reality is that China will never offer citizenship/permanent residence to this African community or any other 'non white' individual. China may welcome Africans for business and trade like they would citizens from other countries but the harsh reality is that they do not wish to grant citizenship/permanent residence to these individuals. It was rather disturbing and shocking to see videos of how the Chinese rejected the African community, accusing them causing covid, and evicting them from their homes in 2020. What chaos, confusion and crisis for the African community! I think that whilst some Africans may feel welcomed and comfortable for now, this is temporary and won't last long, as China is unpredictable in its ever changing laws and policies.
Even Whites are not welcome to be permanent residence in China, unless they are married to the China's people, which is similar in most countries. They can stay so long as their visas are stamped every few years.
China has very strict policies toward migrants from all over the world, not specifically to African. I heard one should be top expert in his field and have accumulated enough working years in China before he is qualified to apply the green cards. Even my Chinese American friend can’t apply it, and a girl who married a Chinese man can’t apply either but just renew the visa yearly.

I live in China and I don’t see a shortage of labor. They still have a lot of young job seekers who are willing to work longer hours than people from other developing countries. Plus, most people from non-Confucius cultures cannot adapt to Chinese work ethics.
Everybody with better growing seasons wants Chinese coolies to build their infrastructure for free when if they worked half as hard as Chinese, they would be richer bcuz their geography is better. It would spare Chinese so much blame.

I have to agree with the Dr Zhao China still has significant amount of holiday that needs to be addressed and a workforce surplus. It is just that the workforce like many further developed countries don’t want to do the factory type labour. Rather than African migration they should take the opportunity to learn from what’s happening in China in terms of manufacturing or working with those cities to build out their own manufacturing base and trading hubs at home.
South Korea and Japan has a major U.S. Military presence. So that is why these two countries have a higher foreign population.

Now, because of China's massive population size, even large migration migrants will account for a small share of China's total population. But large migration will surely have negative repercusions in the cities that receive them (more crime, little fit with the job market in China, etc)

China is overpopulated with little natural resources like water, and arable land. Stats showed this plainly - circa 20% of world's population living in an area of covering less than 8% of the Earth's arable land. So, the more pragmatic solution ought to be to reduce the population by natural aging and moving to more automated and robot-usage industrial development, rather than increasing the population. Besides, contrary to some people's scientifically-unverified opinions, the world may actually already be over-populated because arable land and portable water are both quite limited, and currently constraining to be able t support an even bigger world population. For an increase in population will also mean the need for more energy consumption, which would result in greater consumption of non-renewable energy resources, which, in current state of technolgy, means more carbon emission is required. Hence, leading to more pressure on climate change.

I think if we can somehow get rid of the Chinese and Indian population, many problems would be solved.
They should not change their immigration policies....it will cause resentment among the population who are not familiar with the dynamics of immigration especially if they are African immigrants or immigrants from other countries for that matter. The current state of the amount of immigrants in China is sufficient for now and the population growth has been lowered...better keep it that way
