Okay, so it took me a few listens to really understand "Chinese Satellite" so I don't blame you for that first impression of it, mine was much the same. I think the song (at least from my own understanding and interpretation) is about how Phoebe, who is not a spiritual person, wishes to believe in some kind of higher power but is not able to. I interpret the lyric about the stars not being out so she wishes on the satellite as her attempting to look for guidance from a God or higher power in the stars, not being able to see/feel it, and instead putting her faith in something she can see and understand; the satellite, or science (Phoebe has apparently stated before how she believes science is the closest we can get to supernatural forces, and she really wishes she were able to believe in things like ghosts or spirits or life after death in some capacity). Keeping this in mind, I read the lyrics as sort of a desperate plea for something to believe in in the face of the inevitability of death. Especially when she mentions how she would join in with the evangelicals If it meant she would be able to reconnect with a passed loved one after she herself dies. The song references religion, ghosts/spirits, and aliens as things Phoebe wishes she could believe in, and I think this is because she does not /want/ to believe that "when you're gone it's forever". It's a song I very personally relate to so it has become one of my favorites on the album. I hope you can give it another listen with this theory in mind, and I would love to hear your thoughts if you do!! :)

This is an awesome insight! I didn’t know who it Phoebes spirituality (or, I guess, the lack thereof) but that’s super interesting. I relistened with this in mind and yeah I can totally see how the lyrics are more impactful this way

I love how your first reactions were exactly what mine were, I was starting to get bored and then I heard Moon Song and it really made me bring my attention back to the songs and I was able to enjoy the rest of the album completely. What I love about I Know The End is that is makes me want to listen to the album again and it feeds back into DVD Menu so well. I enjoyed the album so much more the second time around. I found Phoebe’s music earlier this year too and so I think i was expecting a little bit more Stranger in the Alps vibes because I didn’t really process the time passed since that album came out and all of the change and projects Phoebe has done since. I quickly become enamoured by literally everything Phoebe touches. I don’t know if you’ve listened to Christian Lee Hutson, but Phoebe recently produce his new album Beginners and I felt like I could feel the Phoebe touch on the record. Loved this video! I’m definitely going to check out more!

“Punisher” (the actual song) was written about Elliot Smith, and how a “punisher” in Phoebe’s mind is a fan who tends to go over and above in professing love for an artist/icon/whatever to the point that they embarrass themselves in front of their idol, which is how Phoebe sees herself acting if Elliot Smith was still alive today, and they had the chance at meeting (which would have been very likely; she apparently lives a block or two away from his old house in LA).

Yo, wild! I was already thinking about this before you made the alt-country request, because I just heard this album too and it reminded me of the emotional spaces that another album took me to - Dying Star by Ruston Kelly. His Halloween EP is quite good too. But Dying Star really scratches this alt-country/singer-songwriter itch for me. Similar introspective melancholia with these blasts of emotion and energy interspersed. I would put Ruston Kelly and Phoebe Bridgers songs on the same nighttime drive playlist, if that makes sense :)

@@mattlorence4854 lol it's okay! Music takes time. Even with my favorite artists it takes months for me to be able to really listen to the full album. But really, check out the others too. Chill 😉

Yo some really fantastic more indie country artists that I'd recommend would prob be Sturgill Simpson, Emily Scott-Robinson, and Ruston Kelley.

Jason Isbell and Turnpike Troubadours are good country. I’m in the same boat. Don’t like modern sing/talk/rap country about dirt roads and trucks and shit
