I grew up with these trains and got very fond of them, but I was extremely disappointed to see them go, and even more disappointed about the crap replacements. This video is a good tribute to the worlds fastest third rail train.

the wonderful thing about the 'piggies' is, apart from their unique snug bar and compartments was that every one was named, and aged around 7 when they were in service, i can recall particularly enjoying seeing what they were called.

Heard that the Class 442s have now been permanently withdrawn and South Western Railway are retaining the Class 458s to replace the Class 442s and reforming them from 5 to 4 coaches and re-rated to meet the need for 100mph operations and other modifications to associate them for Mainline services to the South Coast

I'm going to Weymouth two days after this year's London Marathon and wonder if the 12:35 service there (19:03 back to Waterloo) will be a 442?
Where I live its a collection of pacers, sprinters 153 single car units, 156s and the Transpennine 185 desiros.
Last time I was in London last Autumn I could've sworn I was on a 442.
They really are top notch comfortable trains and put most of the NW England rolling stock into the sidings.

They're still a bit too young for scrapping. They're just middle aged

And when they do hit Brighton I hope that Southern do run them as 10 car like they intend because there will be so many enthusiasts on them there wont be any room for the commuters. SWT made a big mistake getting rid of these. They could have kept the Weymouth route happy for at least another 10 years!

they probably couldn't keep them up because
they use a lot of plastics thats why the called
pigs and 442001 and the other part of the first
    batch were built in 1987 . I hope southern's
    interiors aren't plastic wasters

I think the Class 442s were great trains. The 442 suspension goes up and down on bumpytrack The Desiro desighn is diffeent, it goes side to side. Ive known people hurt themselves because of this.
The class 450s look very colurful but why get rid of the 442s and just refurbish the 455s.

who got rid of the 442's?
who needlessly replaced the 421's, sending them to a place where they cant run on their own?
who took away the eye catching dinosaur livery from the isle of wight?
and who is now trying to turn the stunning 460's into suburban trash?
    south west trains.
