Yeah I usually do not gatekeep but I think anyone who doesn’t see it that way genuinely has no idea what they are talking about. The Bloodborne soundtrack should have won a Grammy, and the nier automata and hollowknight soundtracks are some of the best music I’ve ever heard.
I guess maybe someone who says that is someone who plays mainly the most mainstream of games, where their music isn’t as “memorable”, I have no doubt those soundtracks are great as well though.

While I dont mind orchestral and classic instruments being used, I wondered what about metal and rock? If you played, say Half Life 2, you would know the soundtracks also used metal and rock in them. Now we have almost every game using orchestra. I'm just asking why we need orchestra in everything in video game? Sure it helps players have a job, but I want to hear some good rock or metal tracks from video games.

There are some exceptions, but I think there is weight to the idea that new video game music is generally worse than old video game music.
Some of the examples you listed are indie games from small teams, and aren't indicative of all music in video games.
Also Undertale is a particularly bad example of modern game OSTs being good since that game's music is intentionally similar to the music from the GBA/Snes soundchip. It's literally meant to sound like the music from retro video games. It even uses direct samples from Earthbound's soundtrack.
Also God of War has generic orchestra and so does a ton of triple A releases now. You could replace the music in God of War with the music from Assasin's Creed or Uncharted and literally nothing would change. It's all just epic/grand/wilderness type orchestra tracks. Compare that to something like the OST of LoZ; Majora's Mask or something, and the difference is night and day. A game like Chrono Trigger absolutely bodies something like Horizon Zero Dawn in the music department.
Part of this is selection bias, though. I am comparing the music from mediocre modern games to the music from the greatest retro games ever made, so obviously there also exists really bad OSTs from retro games as well. However, the primitive console soundchips at the time prevented composers from using high-quality studio orchestra, so they needed to rely on making memorable compositions with MIDI programming of individual samples. In addition to this limitation, retro games often had their entire soundtracks composed by a single person, while most modern soundtracks are composed by large teams of composers and sound engineers. Because of these circumstances, Retro games tended to have very recognizable music, even if the music wasn't always the best. Pretty much everyone can recognize a track composed by Koji Kondo or Akira Yamaoka, but can you honestly be able to tell a song composed by one of the many God of War composers?
Better yet, can you even tell apart the music from Assassins' creed Odyssey and Assassins' creed Orgins even though they were made by different people? I'm not so sure you can...

People claiming video game music has gotten worse are just nostalgia blinded people clinging to the time when they were 11 years old. It also has a lot to do with technical limitations of music back then. The NES for example couldn't produce more than 4 sounds at a time (6 with specially made chips like the VRC-6 used in the Japanese version of Castlevania III) and because of that they had to have a strong focus on melody in order not to be grating as fuck. People cling to melody more than anything else so as games were able to strip the technical limitations and have bigger ideas than "just" melodies that stick in your head some people naturally think it got worse.
A great example of what vidya music used to be like and what it can be now is comparing the original versions of Final Fantasy songs with their renditions in Final Fantasy XIV. Stuff like Dancing Mad or Terra's Theme were amazing when they were first written by Nobuo Uematsu but the FFXIV versions completely murders them and takes them several levels above that.

Provide a list of other Japanese composers that have created soundtracks similar or identical to the types of tracks offered by NieR. Go ahead, I'll be waiting. The only one that comes to mind is Motoi Sakuraba's remix of Destroyed Skyworld in Smash Bros Wii U, which is *one* track that has a somewhat NieR-esque vibe.
NieR, and NieR:Automata both display Keiichi Okabe's particular style very well, a style well-defined to the same extent as that of Yuki Kajiura's. @IronicHavoc Před 4 lety +9

I get what you're trying to say, but I think you might be reading into things unnecessarily.
I think he just picked an image of a video game character playing music, not making a comment on Nier specifically.
And he was probably referring to a lot of triple A games, which I can understand that movie comparison more for. Considering specific exceptions were made for two well known indie games in this makes me think he would also acknowledge something like Hollowknight, Undertale, etc., but likely doesn't play many games. So I wouldn't say his impressions are completely baseless when interpreting what he says in that context.
And even then, the ending lines seem to indicate he's not totally dismissing modern video game music, just contrasting it with the sort of creativity and iconic simplicity you saw in technologically constrained early years, mostly for the sake of acknowledging where that tweet is coming from (which is largely the premise of this show).
I also know plenty of people who are into less mainstream movie stuff that would disagree with the other side of that original tweet, but a majority of people immediately equate movies with Hollywood and thus take less issue with that generalization.
So in that regard, just mentally rephrase the tweet and discussion to be about "Hollywood/Triple-A Games" - and disregard the choice of Nier as a background as a likely unintended irony.

The last decade has had some of the best video game soundtracks EVER, with Persona 5's acid jazz, Life is Strange and Last of Us with some acoustic master pieces and Nier Automata, with music that perfectly reflects the moments and atmosfere of the game. Disagree.
There's a lot of fantastic video game soundtrack getting released each year.
NieR: Automata is a great example. Not only that the soundtrack build up the atmosphere and tone of the game, they tell stories.
Each character's theme song in Devil May Cry V tells the story of the character, using the music to represent the character's personality. Even the lyrics symbolize the characters' developments throughout the story.
Monster Hunter series have memorable soundtracks that set up and gives the monsters identities.
Other memorable soundtracks came out in recent years:
    -Bloodborne
    -Dark Souls series
    -Final Fantasy series
    -God of War
    -Legend of Zelda series
    -Octopath Traveler
    -Persona 5
    -Resident Evil 2 Remake
    -Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
    -Super Smash Brothers Ultimate
    -Transistor
    -Witcher 3
-many many more, the list goes on and on.
Video games soundtrack is not there to only heighten the mood. In many games, the soundtrack has to sync up with the mechanic and act as a signal for the players to properly interact with the mechanics. Many action games have soundtrack that does this.
Also, calling most recent video games as interactive cinema is just pure ignorance.

I disagree. Games like Nier Automata and the whole Final Fantasy 13 trilogy have shown that music has not been totally gone over the last 14ish years. I would argue its more east vs west where in eastern games music accompanies a scene where in western games its in the background of scenes. Both use liscensed music in their games at times which has a varying degree of effectiveness. Say what you want about Borderlands and the company who makes them, they do have entertaining intros with accompanying music. I think the real problems is music isn't a focus. Which fair enough it isn't always a focus but music or lack their of can make or break scenes in games. Fighting Anubis in ZOE2 is enhanced by the music, fighting a tv turned android disco machine in Undertale is enhanced dramatically by its music. A game's battle theme can change how much you want to fight. Persona 5 made you want fights to last longer because the music was excellent.

God, Whang's opinion on modern soundtracks is a carbon copy equivalent to having people experiencing these soundtracks for the first time and making them feel like "they're born in the wrong generation" and I'm sure everyone knows why that phrase is annoying.
Laziness in understanding change in a rapidly evolving medium that are video games, ignorance in the effort of soundtracks that try their absolute best to connect their soundtracks to the games thematically and symbolically such as in Persona and ESPECIALLY NieR. And the lack of knowledge that chiptune is in fact a genre, not a thing of the past. Listen to "Rolling down the Street, In My Katamari" and "Surfing on a Sine Wave" by FearofDark. I think the point of the videogame discussion is not that the music is worse. Its just more diverse. A lot of the older 8-bit and 16-bit music was catchy because they had to be. They had to make loops that could be played over and over again, with limited space and gear, so it had to be someething you wouldnt mind hearing 100 times. Nowadays you dont need that. So in a way the music from that time was more memorable because it was more repetitive and in your face, but not in an annoying way.

  • @HeavensOfMetal
    @HeavensOfMetal Před 5 lety +14

Video game music isn't getting worse, the whole, "It used to be better" attitude is just nostalgia speaking - you remember the good classics, but you played about a hundred games as a kid & you remember about ten of the good games & each of them had one or two tracks you liked. You remember FFX's "Hymn of the Faith" & "To Zanarkand" because they were good tracks, but you probably don't remember "This is the music that plays on path two of jungle area" & "This is the music that plays during an underwater battle on this island". Much in the same way you don't remember any song from Inspector Gadgets Crazy Maze, Shrek's Treasure Hunt & Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge - yes, those are all games that exist.
It's just like when people grow up & they say, "My era of music was better than this", no, you've just filtered out all the shit & right now, you're dealing with good shit & bad shit. The 80s had some great shit & we still listen to it to this day, but it had bad shit & we left it there, now no one remembers it. No one remembers bad soundtracks from 90s games - it's as dead as they are.
In the past couple years I've been really impressed with a lot of video game soundtracks, notably games like Hollow Knight, Nier Automata & Persona 5. Likewise, there'll be a tonne of forgettable soundtracks & bad ones, they'll be lost to the winds of time & in 20 years people will say, "Remember Nier Automata's soundtrack? The 10s had the best video game soundtracks".
As for mood, all music is there to heighten mood, whether action packed, ambient, sombre, etc. think about Digimon World for the PS1 - used a bunch of short, simple loops for the music in each area & flipped them for night & day time. A small change of instruments or pace was there to heighten the mood - but you wouldn't compare that to like an Uncharted soundtrack, but they fill the same roles.

I truly think that the issue with “memorizing video game music” is that modern video game music is more complicated. Think about Mario, original theme is about 20 notes or less, so much easier to memorize. Games that are full experiences have complicated orchestral pieces, and those pieces are played through boss battles and stressful moments. While that can make a song more memorable, but you won’t be able to replicate it from memory because you likely only heard it a few times while you weren’t focusing on it
