  • Holy crap this was such a massive undertaking. I was looking at a computer for about 16 hours on average! I cannot say how f-ing glad I am to get this over with! I own nothing. Thomas is owned by Hit Entertainment and Mattel. No copyright infringement intended. Purely for commentary.

I think its a pretty good special and if the show had kept to the style here it would have been still tolerable. I didn't know you had Aspergers! I know I have stuff in common with you in that we have a disability, but yeah I have severe autism and it makes me often struggle to function in society. It was interesting seeing disability being portrayed on a character again, because I think the only other time I could remember Thomas & Friends doing an engine with a disability thing was Henry with his old shape story, which was way back in the early days of the series.
It was also interesting that the characters now seem to bop around, though I guess that may be due to the new animation studio working on this, Jam Filled. This was definitely the darkest Thomas & Friends special to date, and the atmosphere of the steelworks felt like a solid nod to the Season 5 episode Stepney Gets Lost. Heck, even the crash Henry had at the start reminded me of his famous crash in The Flying Kipper, since it did involve a goods train and a signal problem.

Great review. I thought the new movie was really good. I really liked it. It didn't exactly top Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure, but it definitely topped The Great Race. (I still enjoyed TGR but I think JBS was better) On a scale of 1 to 10, I give Journey Beyond Sodor an 8. If they hadn't added the "engines moving their bodies around" effects, and made some improvements on some parts, then I believe it would have shared the top spot with SLOTLT, I enjoyed the songs, and I loved all the new characters, my favorites were Merlin, Hurricane, and Theo.

Here's how I felt it should have gone down:
After Thomas arrives on the mainland, he doesn't see Beresford, and goes to The Steelworks right away. After realizing that Frankie and Hurricane are holding him hostage, he escapes and runs into the experimental engines, who he becomes fast friends with after realizing Theo was Fergus' cousin. He then tells them about Hurricane and Frankie, and how he wanted to go back home. The latter then pass by. Merlin explains that Hurricane and Frankie used to make deliveries to their yard, until it went out of business, and that they would most likely come here looking for Thomas.
Thomas then travels past the canal, and meets Beresford, who accidentally dropped a boat on the line. Thomas then spots a barge, which he suspects will take him back to Sodor. He tells Beresford to lower him onto the barge, which Beresford reluctantly complies to. The barge then arrives to a mainland harbor, where Hurricane is making a delivery, and is caught. Theo sees Thomas being taken back to The Steelworks, and alerts the others, who devise a plan.
The Experimental Engines arrive at The Steelworks, and see that not only is Thomas trapped, but James as well, who came looking for him, only to be caught in Hurricane and Frankie's trap. With two engines to rescue, the plan is halted until Merlin came up with an ingenious plan!
The plan started with Merlin luring Hurricane and Frankie off the property, with Lexi blocking the entrances afterwards. Lexi and Theo would then locate the captives, and escape! The plan was put into effect, but when the time to escape, Lexi and Theo realized that they had just trapped themselves inside, none strong enough to push through the blockades.
The captivators return, and begin to chase them down. Lexi manages to derail Hurricane behind some shelves, with Frankie chasing down Thomas and James. Thomas then runs out of coal, rendering him trapped, much to Frankie's joy! With Frankie and James going off in another direction, Theo couples up to Thomas, gathers some trucks, and charges for one of the blockades, only to smash into the refueling station, bursting one of the tankers and detaining Theo. Thomas then gets picked up by a magnet, and is almost dropped into a vat of molten steel until one of Theo's gears bursts off and knocks the vat over towards the refueling station.
The magnet breaks, sending Thomas onto the ground. Merlin rerails Theo, and shunts Thomas back onto the rails. Frankie almost catches James, but is knocked off the rails by the overturned vat and into the molten steel on the ground. With her immobilized, the engines escape.
After making their way back to Sodor, the experimental engines are cleaned, and given new homes. Even Theo meets his cousin again!

I pretty much agree about the bouncing, it's stupid, but it's no worse than annoying. And I hate how everyone in the fandom says if I'm not deeply offended then I'm not a true Thomas fan like they are. The soul of Thomas and Friends has always been their storytelling, not the visuals, while we the fans care about the visual legacy Wilbert Awdry I'm pretty sure wouldn't give two shits. Awdry has always hated the character designs from day one. And never accepted anything less than 100% unrealistic other than the locomotives and rolling stock having faces. All he cares about is the storytelling and realism in the story.
The fact that people are calling this the worst Thomas movie souley because their bouncing just erks me. They'll stop at nothing when they have to defend Magic Railroad and Misty Island just to say that this is the worst, even if it means contradicting themselves as well as common logic.
I think I'm pretty fed up with the fandom. I still respect fans like you, DieselD199, Unlucky Tug, SidekickJason and such since you don't call people idiots for having an opinion on the special. But I think I'll try to stay away from the rest of the fandom until they grow up.

      @donkeykongbrawlsmash4745 Před 7 lety +5

Exactly, I see what you mean. Many people in the fandom are making fiends out of themselves.
I didn't read the RWS as a kid, and the few books that I did read, I didn't like it too much. My fandom in the show came from Seasons 1-7, and Magic Railroad. So I really don't care about realism or the rws.
Now, People will mistakenly claim that I am not a true Thomas Fan... Correction: I am not a Railway Series fan.
Not a Railway Series Fan does not mean Not a True Thomas Fan.
I don't call people idiots for having different opinions. It may be hard for people to tell, because of my Theo-like disability.
Just wanted you to know that you are not alone.

I Honestly love the movie, and for me is tied with SLOTLT. The characters were great, but Beresford was ok. His scenes could have been taken out, such As fleshing out the ending a little more, and instead of picking up Thomas, an engine instead could have hid him such as pushing into a siding or something like what Duck did in BEST FRIENDS. I like the bouncing, and people really overreacted saying things like AWDRY IS ROLLING IN HIS GRAVE or that it goes against the rws, and acted like realism is the most important part of the series, and say that the show is going to go into another dark age because of very small things in JBS and a few images and titles.

    • @DukeOfBenreBay
      @DukeOfBenreBay Před 7 lety +3

So characters, character development, and the story are not as important? If realsim was the most important, then why were there stories in the classic era, renesanse era, and the RWS, that depend on things that are unrealistic. If realism was the focus or most important, then they show probably wouldn't be round do this long.

My Fourth in my top four favorite Thomas and Friends movies. This order: SLOTLT (for it's awesomeness), TAB (for pure feels and story), TATMR (for pure nostalgia- not to mention the music) and JBS. I liked it. It had me laughing almost every two minutes, but when I wasn't there was usually quite dark and/or emotional. I wish Hurricane had done the special's second Wizard of Oz reference, y'know first there was "Thomas, I don't think that we are on Sodor any more." and then Hurricane would obviously pull the "I'm melting!" bit. I also loved the references to the fandom (not to mention Fat Hatt's Winston Churchill impressions). Brilliant! The subtile moral of "Slavery and forced labor is not a good way to get new friends" was very entertaining.
I have all of the songs stuck in my head. There even getting rid of some of TGR songs. (Which have been stuck in my head for a YEAR)
I think that the I Want To Go Home would've been a great place to slip in some returnees, but I don't mind that they didn't.
I agree with you on the bouncing completely.
I loved the soundtrack SOOO MUCH.
I like Victor Tanzig's personal canon explanation of the engine and driver relationship and what they each can and can't do, and I wish it was TVS canon. (And in the RWS engines can move by themselves a bit- look at Henry in his tunnel incident. He put on his own brakes.)
P.S. GWR Studios is going to have a field day with this! xD (No offense intended)
P.P.S. Lexi is based off of an actual experimental engine, a cab-forward 4-4-0 built for the (narrow gauge!) South Pacific Coast Railroad here in my home state of California.

I think these specials could be masterpieces (to us at least) if they were given the time. I think Mattel's just trying to push new content out too quickly. I also think they're getting too focused on the "new plays- er, location and characters" to give the writers enough time to focus on working with what we have.
I think they need to refocus on quality over quantity.

Now, I wouldn't be able to tell how close to BR it is (seeing as I'm American), but everything does look generic and stock-standard, or else (like the bridge scene) looks like a lazy Trainz route.
That's why I think Thomas' seasons and specials need to be spread out more. Give more time for the animators as well to sit down and make something really good instead of a quick buck and then onto the next.

Why is Duck not in there? Bigger question, why the hell is Rusty in the group!? He's not even standard gauge for one & for another he's not even owned by Sir Topham Hatt anymore. Mr. Percival has been his controller since season 8 or 9. Why couldn't they simply just replaced Rusty with Duck? Sure you could have the argument of Rusty being there to represent the Narrow Gauge Engines but if that's so one, why Rusty of all characters? It would've made more sense that it be Victor to represent that seeing how he's the only narrow gauge engine currently owned by Sir Topham Hatt. And two, with that said why weren't the miniature gauged engines in there? Sure you could say that they were only in so many episodes/movies but they are still a part of the universe so why not include them in that sequence? That's my only gripe with that scene.

Before, when an engine cried, you just saw the tears, like in Seasons 1 and 2 or Percy in Day Of The Diesels. I have Asperger's myself and Thomas crying in Season 1 makes me feel bad, so I get it. He cries in my FanFiction, but always with comfort. No one tells him not to cry, but they may dry his tears. I read a fanfic in which Caitlin asked her driver to dry her tears, so I've an engine do that. Engines other than Thomas may cry with comfort, but I don't personally need them to have comfort, so I have engines like Henry or Molly comforted for my readers. I don't want a fan of Henry or any engine I have cry that's a canon one other than Thomas flame me because their favorite engine was crying big fat tears and no one came. The boiler theory sounds like something from Tootle. Did you read Tootle when you were little? I have a book Here Comes Tootle, leftover from childhood. A comment on a blog led me to find the original book.

I will say that I agree with what you said about the movie except for one thing. And that would be the movement of the engines during the music numbers I think personally think it's a little too distracting for my taste. But the movement of the engines doesn't really bother me when they're speaking it gives them a little bit more Expressions particularly between the conversation between Sir Topham Hatt and James where James was a little bit more moving around trying to describe his situation with Sir Topham Hatt and Sir Topham Hatt just saying hey it doesn't matter because it's just getting the job done. Similar to say a person trying to describe something by getting fatigue and like drooping of shoulders. But overall it was a really good story and the movie was pretty good in my opinion and thank you for your review you are amazing CZcamsr with your projects with Thomas & Friends.

You have Aspergers?? I respect anyone that comes out and says that they have Aspergers since I, myself, have ADHD. Sure, ADHD and Aspergers are different in some ways, but I was almost diagnosed with Aspergers and, therefore, can relate to anyone who has Aspergers.I will say that the movie was a good movie, the movements of the engines was definitely a new approach, there were some dark moments, the songs were "interesting," but some of the new characters blew me away, especially Theo. The fandom was saying that Theo was suppose to be Autistic and I was like "We'll see about that." Well, Theo has become one of my new favorite characters. His characteristics did not scream I HAVE AUTISM, rather it showed some of the characteristics that did not stereotype a person with Autism so I give kudos to the one who created Theo. Overall, I did like the movie. I don't love it nor do I hate it, I just like it. The movements had me going "Ehhhh" but that's beside the point. I did laugh at some points of the movie, but Henry's only line in the movie had me rolling with laughter. I would recommend this movie to anyone who still loves Thomas but I would warn them about the movements.

I feel like they should have swapped Henry and James' roles around, seeing how Henry originally was a faulty steam engine before he got his new shape at Crewe; not only would he have had more chemistry with the Experimentals, it could have been an opportunity to show Henry's backstory as mentioned in _The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways_ book that Awdry penned himself.

Also, having seen BWBA and the entirety of Series 22, the body movements of the engines was still being used, but now it's much more well integrated.
They move more naturally with their dialogue and half the time they don't even need to say anything in response to a question; just a subtle shake or a slight jolt is all they need.

Yeah but when your world is populated with trains that have the capability to comprehend human thought and can think for themselves, the realism is already gone. Now if this were the model series, then yes it looks weird, but since the series is now animated, they can get away with more. And no I'm not going to accept "Rev W Awdry would never approve" as an argument. I lost respect for the guy after what he said about series 3.

I'll be honest, I didn't think they went too far with the bouncing engines. It's only really exaggerated during the songs, or when the engines are showing strong emotion. The Experimental Trio are definitely more exaggerated than say, Thomas and James, but since they're EXPERIMENTAL, test models that failed to pass said test, I think it makes sense that they would have some quirks like that. I can understand why people hate the bouncing, but I don't think it reached "Chuggington" levels like most have said. ......Now if they start physically jumping, then I might have a problem.
That said, I really enjoyed Journey Beyond Sodor. The story was solid, the new characters (besides Discount Cranky) were a lot of fun, the animation was great, the songs, while not as memorable as the ones from The Great Race, were still good, and the instrumentals, as well the score, are the best of any special so far, IMO. Not as great as Lost Treasure or Adventure Begins, but still very good.
