- Cohen is interviewed about his descesion to join a zen monestry, but the interview steers towards his depression, relationships. The chick who interviews Cohen is quite intrusive, and insulting at times.

Leonard Cohen's voice is like a warm blanket for the soul
Ville Ällä WHAT a lovely description!!
It sure is
God bless Leonard Cohen. Rest In Peace, and thank you for music. So sad this woman treated you so crassly and cold.
Man, his voice is great even when he talks.
cigarettes
Yea, even when he talks about depression .
TheRadFactor the voice ! Yes!
TheRadFactor
Yes
Leonard's voice, especially when he sings, sends chills down my spine.
There are other effects too
The best singers always talk melodically and sing conversationally
That women is VULGAR. Leonard Cohen on the otherhand shows what a beautiful person he is.
i cant stand her ! how did SHE get to interview him? :S :(
God, I know right? EGO-beyotch chasing a story...
@@Oo7Hola No, it's definitely not.
Oo7 Hola Amerikan, maybe
@@Oo7Hola : so true!!
Leonard is a gem , he deserves respect.
Cohen's civility in the face of this obnoxious woman is very inspiring. He takes all of her questions perfectly seriously and simply answers them.
he is the epitome of a gentleman here, very polite and straight ahead -it looks highly edited.... she's had too much coffee or stupidity, and wants to get a story and i believe has read a one paragraph bio on someone she knows nothing about.
Erich
Its called subjugating the ego.
Lol her demeanor is so crass... I came looking and found my thoughts as the first comment
How few of us could manage that degree of civility.
Such a humble, honest and good man, RIP Mr Cohen, the world loves your music and lyrics, we have loss yet another great artist
Proof that Buddhist philosophy give you amazing tolerance...
Getfitdit Of the highly annoying interviewer-HA, yes!
My thoughts exactly. Equanimity level - Gangsta
I need Buddhist Philosophy then because I want to reach thru and slap her ... She's insensitive, seems uneducated and brash
You'd be surprised how much you can stand with that kinda of wisdom
@@mollylynn9670 How do you really feel?
What a truly wonderful guy,he handled her so well, depression is an awful illness, you have to go through it to really understand what it does to you,i would not wish it on my worst enemy.
Disarming candidness, humility, and as always, great wisdom and charm. What a truly inspirational human being and gentleman he is.
The interviewer is shallow and de-respectful, everytime Lenard starts saying something deep and insightful, she stops him with one of her glamourous set up stupid questions, not all, but many. He has been very humble and intelligent, with this cheeky woman!
I totally agree with you Ordeon! She is very disrespectful!
I am surprised by the interviewer, my dog has more sensibility than she does!
Yes, you are absolutely right Ordeon abucco.
agree
Just unaware.
He still makes the point. Everybody has something. He rises above her and gets his points across.
If you can choose between cancer and adhd :-)
Even though the lady seems a bit off kilter, I am thankful she pressed him for insight.... I come back to this interview from time to time.... it has saved my life because Cohen was pressed to explain the essence of the pain I feel ....trying desperately to find a reason to keep on living.... it's hard.... so grateful that he was ask to explored the depth of his pain... he's genuine... not fake.... GRATITUDE I've lost count of the number of times I've watched his DVD in Tibet...again...insightful...
Good work is produced in spite of suffering... as a victory over suffering.
I love this!
Mr.Cohen handles this interview with grace and compassion. Thank you Leonard, where ever you are!
One of my biggest regret I did not have a chance to see this man in concert. I like the guy. When I am stuck in traffic I put his songs. It calmed me down instantly. Thé greatest!
Leonard Cohen was one of a kind! Honest, loving, kind, like so many of us ... May he rest in peace ... we'll miss you!
Valerie Pringle was so condescending & lacking compassion. Leonard, however was raw & real.
He put all his emotions into his art & created beautiful, melodies set to soul-touching, fearlessly-human lyrics. Beloved. Sad he's died but so grateful & celebrating are we that he was here.
*We'll remember you well...Goodbye, we'll think of you--often...Leonard's calling.*
Her words 'depressing songs' says it all, she has no clue. Interesting that two opposites meet Valerie a born OVERLY optimistic spirit, Leonard born with an OVERLY sensitive soul. We can't help how we are born and I am tired of people like Valerie (calling him a manic depressive - he was not he has the exact same thing I have major depression not bi polar a HUGH difference) calling major depression the same a bi-polar is ignorant and offensive.
***** agreed. Great comment you made. Yeah Valerie's pretty shallow & insensitive...tad sadistic too imho.
What about DRUGS,,
This woman is clearly someone who has bought into every cliché ever uttered re depression/artistic expression. Leonard doesn't just display good grace here; he shows what it must be like to be enlightened.
Yeah she was probably hoping he would just get overwhelmed and kill himself like some artists do. He just does not perform when he does not feel up to it.
She is so socially predictable, but Leonard is on his level, she isn't, she is on a transcript, poor woman...come on Leonard, you taught her something, I hope
Leonard outrightly handled her terrible questions as only he being the man he is, could.
Sort of heavy-handed questioning, but Leonard accepted the opportunities to dredge up the truth from within him. I think he could easily have shut her down if he wanted to.
Craig Ferich I totally agree with you. He proved once again that he's always going to have the upper hand in situations such as this.
Marten Dekker
I was thinking the same thing as I watched this. She talked to him like a friend - with spontaneity and authentic interest.
Indeed; she almost seems antagonistic. Strange...
Love this Man's Honesty ....and integrity
A class act to the very end. Even though the interviewer is a bit annoying Leonard is still charm personified. I'm going to miss him so much.
It is a complete myth that Leonard Cohen's work is depressing. Most of it is extraordinarily uplifting.
John Malcolm You know, his work, through the years has HELPED me overcome depression and has aided me in becoming a poet of sorts...all due to my absorbing his words and singing his songs SINCE 1978....I was late to come to the party...but I have stayed on and have invited many to join me and have introduced hundreds to L.C. I have only made it to three concerts though $$$ prevents....but what concerts they were! Standing ovations that went on and on and on and on! And he responded to them! And in his 70's! The audiences were of all ages! Beautiful! LOVELY!
Wonderful to hear
And funny ~ so many people miss the subtle witt in a lot of his work. X
@@richwindex9371 melancholy doesn't mean it's depressing.
Well depends how depressed the listener is themselves how they will perceive it.
Lenny gave us all another... lesson in tactful, gracious humility while expressing his uniquely brilliant philosophies . RIP L.C.
Every word he said in response to this interviewer was perfectly stated in honesty. I listened to every word.If you have suffered with clinical depression, this is a godsend interview for us who shared the same disease.I was and am not alone, thank you Leonard. I only hope you have been released of it now that you are on the other side.
and how insensitive she was
Insensitive. Yes
Its the woman-interviewer, lock-step go-for-the-juggler style that your media boss says "sells. "
Jugular
+Sandra Sears - agreed. Regardless of the interviewer, it's about Leonard who under his circumstances came out shining. I also listened to every word. Great man, and depression is a serious illness, he handled this with dignity and courage in a world so hell bent with stigma's on mental illness. I admire his strength living with this awful "dis ease" in life. I hope he is at peace.
Is it just me or does the interviewer seem completely clueless? I admire Leonard's patience with her.
This interview shows once again what a great man, a real gentleman, mr cohen is!! :) Despite being interviewed by a not-so-experienced interviewer, hes still very nice and patient and answer to Every question that woman ask, even the more intrusive... that was an interesting interview, hes never boring or say obvious things, im really enchanted by this man ♥♥
Holy shit that reporter ruined what could have been an interview for the ages.
absolutely
She was very Brash ,she made me squirm.
some kid writing for their high school paper could have pulled off a better interview
chilly n impersonal interviewer. Wow. so cold n distant.
He is getting anoid with her. He was as I am a HSP, it is not easy.
Leonard Cohen, you were and are a legend. Thank you for giving us so many beautiful lyrics. ❤
A predisposition for depression is a big part of the artistic personality. This interview has helped me to understand Cohen. He is a very smart and educated man.
wow- talk about an arrogant interviewer- and he is such a beautiful and transparent soul.
The contrast is striking..such total opposites!!
He handled this awful woman with such grace.
Rude.
The woman has no class or manners whatsoever, and its irrelevant how well-known she is !!!
Yep Lorraine I am American. You say Pringle I think potato chips, lol. I listened to it again I would guess she's Canadian since she said ooot instead out. Regardless of where she is from or how well known she apparently is, I thought she was rude and clearly I am not the only one as even the person who uploaded the video used the words intrusive and insulting.
Oh god, the interviewer actually suggested that some people deliberately cling to clinical depression to remain creative. Just one of several cringe-worthy moments.
That's the thing! I love his interviews so much because he always displays such amazing grace and (even if superficial?) respect toward any (silly) interviewer! The example to look up to. If only there were more people like that in this mean world.
holy shit, I cannot stand this woman Jesus Christ. I don't think I have ever loved Leonard Cohen more than after he answered the "Prozac" question because he acted more gentleman like than I would.
Well said.
Not as well said if he followed Leonard's way of dealing...no cussing or swearing coming from him. That's because he is a gentleman.
She is absolutely horrible. She sounds like she wants to destroy him. She couldn’t be more insensitive and rude.
This is a masterclass for me on how to gracefully handle, shallow and intrusive people. Thank you, master Leonard!
I met Leonard Cohen in Phoenix, Arizona after a concert just before he was leaving the Celebrity Theater in his limousine in 1976. He actually made the time for me to pose a question regarding his yet unrecorded song, “The Swan”, which appeared in 1979 on his album ‘Recent Songs’. (‘The Swan’ it floated on the English river…’). He actually took the time to have me express my reaction to this recently composed chanson and gracefully put up with my having interrupted his attempt to exit the area to thank me for expressing my favorable reaction and shook my hand before stepping into the waiting limo. He was living in Los Angeles at the time and chose to perform at this theater two or three times in 1976 as it was the perfect venue to sort out new material for his upcoming recording sessions given the intrinsic intimacy of this theater in the round. For me, his patience in allowing me this generous opportunity was typical of the attitude in never allowing himself to feel above any attendee but rather had the innate capacity to relate on an individual level with any admirer of his work.
the interviewer is a little immature for the depth of feelings, emotion, experience that Leonard Cohen is relating. In the last 10 years or so people have become much more open about sharing the difficulties and confusion about life.
Well said, i agree with you, totally!
I was a haight-ashbury hippie..there was so much turmoil in values, attitudes, actually was surprised that Leonard Cohen was still alive, People may have spoken idealistic words but many were seeking to advance their own agenda with the usual bag of tricks lying, cheating, stealing, taking advantage of naive souls..it was still a dog eat dog world filled with drugs and the sentiment, not my fault, casting doubt & denial. It also was the beginning of the media circus.
+LukeKlondike Reminds me of the Johnny Cash song, I've been everywhere, man, across the desert sands..etc. What brought me to vid was my search for an old folk song, Passing Through. recorded by Pete Seeger on Folkways Records. I grew up on East Coast, California, the Haight, was my culture shock.
I don't think it's that she is emotionally immature so much as she's just a condescending bitch lol
A fond Adieu `The man of words` RIP
dear tv-station producers: please consider which reporter you send to which celebrity. thank you.
A pretty cold interviewer and at times, rude. Must not have been hard to get that job. Cohen was a dear. He also almost seemed childlike.
she wasn't as insulting as she was learning... his honesty just blazes and she was learning about creativity from a master, Leonard Cohen.
agreed....she is unendurable herself....myself i would of walked away...she is full of narsasistic ignorance...shameful...
love this man love his songs he's true and real and understands depression
Good God that woman is abrasive
He did handle this with grace. I love him too. Never want him to die
Indeed... I found myself talking to my computer, telling her to shut the fuc* up. I don't know how she ever scored an interview with Leonard...but then again, he is much kinder than I...
The woman's name is Valerie Pringle. I remember her from years ago. I don't like her attitude or the style of her questions either (per some earlier comments).
She is the absolute pits.
She's o.k. Leonard doesn't seem to mind answering the questions. He doesn't have to answer if he doesn't want to and although her questions are personal, she seems sympathetic.
@@Numinosity1949 DON't you mind it if I call you Luminosity referring to your most understanding & compassionate analysis of the events & characters in the interview ; Leonard HAD FOUND the RIGHT PLACE & PEOPLE BEING ORDAINED A ZEN MONK ; here he demonstrates it was not for fake ; I hope his journey to be a PRAJANA PARAMITA one ; in this life , he was already on the way My humble thinking
A prayer was answered later on when the veil of ‘shipwreck’ lifted for this beautiful human being. He came to realize his own truth: he came to Victory and Lightness and undeterred, he continued to write and sing his gifts 🙏🏻💗
I agree. I've dealt with depression for most of my life, on and off (I'm in my mid 50s now) and, while nothing he said surprised me, he has such a gift with words that his description of the difficulty at the worst of it in even moving from one moment to the next provides me some comfort. Perhaps it's partly knowing the company I keep isn't bad at all. What I really think is that his willingness to be so naked about it felt freeing for me &, I'm willing to bet, for others who struggle with it.
"Everybody's got to deal with something that is rough". Never a truer word spoken. And there hangs the key to LC's success: he puts into words those evanescent, transient fleeting thoughts that zap through your mind when you least expect them. The floodgates start leaking and seep bits of bad memory debris which engulf you.
It always makes me cringe a little when I hear somebody with depression issues cornered into explaining it like it's some kind of mental malfunction, as if a person could chalk up their reaction to this existence and therefore their life as a malady based on some comparison to "normal" peoples behavior. Some might argue that the people who carry the banners for the status quo in such a twisted and vicious society are the mentally deranged ones. I guess he said that though, everybody has their thing. I just find it a little smug when people act as if there is some prototypical way of being and everyone who can't or won't accept or aspire to it are broken.
+hal astarte I'm not very good with words but the way you explained it perfectly sums up how I feel the general public often perceive people with depression and it's very frustrating to say the least. Reminds me of a Kurt Vonnegut quote I heard "A sane person to insane society must appear insane."
eXistenZ0086 thanks, yeah, it is frustrating.
You just summed up my thoughts in a way I probably could not have!
hal astarte Not to even mention she pulled out the tried and true statement that everyone says to depressed people: "Lighten up!". Man I hate people sometimes..
hal astarte , you couldn’t have described our plight more poignantly. Yes. Perhaps they , the insensitive, judgmental, scornful, banner waving status quo of this contemptuous society, are the truly broken ones.
what a unsensible women..what a polite man of a smart and honest guy
This woman is awful. His songs are not depressing! They are laments about longing about the human condition; romantic and sentimental.
She is depressing, shallow, curt and glib and obviously lacks depth missing the point completely
Leonard Cohen was/is a great man and a true artist
(RIP)
She is so far from getting it. Thick as a brick!
It's hopeful I believe
His songs are the human condition; relationships, longing, sex, depression, fear, resentment, suffering and at the same time beauty.
I was getting really annoyed listening to this woman but then I realised it is not what Leonard would have done.RIP.💜💜💜💜
HE'S MY HERO ..
WHAT AN ELATED SOUL A GIFT 2 THE PLANET.
WHAT AN INSPIRATION HE HAS HAD ON THE WORLD..
MISS HIM SO...
Yet another reason for me to adore Leonard Cohen... and I totally get where he's coming from about depression, relationships, and creativity.
Valerie Pringle was a disgusting interviewer. Glad she''s not in the media anymore.
Oh, thank god for that!
4:05 Class-act response. This is how you do it, gentlemen.

I got 4 minutes left to watch, but had to react before I watched another second, THIS woman is clearly the MENTAL PERSON I Can already tell..just saying
The lack of the interviewer's sensitivity in her tone is shocking. Mr. Cohen has the poise and grace to answer her with an inner strength and honest and brave responses. Hopefully she learned a lot about herself after conducting this interview.
Vile women. He handled her amazing. ~X~
He was angelic in his humility and humanness . Beautiful man.❤️🌟💙
I actually really liked the interviewer. - I've suffered terrible depression for many many years, and I loved the answers she was drawing out of him. It may sound harsh or inapropriate the way she spoke to him, but his mastery of conversation actually made me wish this interview was hours long.
Glad to see, after scrolling down, I wasn't the only one who thought this woman was terrible. She seemed clueless and obnoxious to me, fake... gave me the heebie jeebies! But Leonard handled it very well and gave impressive responses to everything.
He feels very familiar, ancient even, someone who'se led a meaningful life. I was instantly remembered of this grandfatherly figure and one who'se with the times.
Love your "croaking"! You've brought us beautiful songs. Thank you!!!
Leonard Cohen is a brilliant poet, writer, musician and comes across as a genuine, wise, funny and humble man. What a pity that the interviewer is so clearly on a different planet, I found this hard to watch, all credit to him that he remained so Cool. (The capital letter was intentional!)
He handled that Behemoth woman well
Noblesse oblige
*Fairly* well
At one point 'Well' would have been throwing her out of the door
Of course his empathy is such he wouldn't
She has nothing to say and no good questions. He takes pity on her and makes a good interview for her as a present 🎁
Love that man's memory. He is so articulate and feeling. Have to admit, the woman seemed a little clueless as to who she was talking to. Cohen was great before she was born and his name will be remembered long after hers is forgotten.
a little clueless? you are kind.
Teri I excuse her on behalf of her youth and inexperience.
Interesting to see the reaction here to the attitude of the interviewer, and their perception of how obnoxious and insulting she is when, in fact, her questions are insightful and right on the mark. It's a challenge to interview anyone who is famous, it takes skill, and this lady came prepared, didn't stumble her way through it, but knew about him, and asked intelligent questions. It seemed to me that both of them enjoyed the conversation, and neither one found it insulting. Cohen seemed perfectly at ease. And he is, by the way, a favorite of mine, a poet and something of a genius. I love his music, and above all his brilliant lyrics.
WHAT A LOVELY SMILE YOU HAD LEONARD SMILING EYES R.I.P MAN X X
Interviewer for sure missed a great opportunity to have had one of the best and most open interviews about Depression.
It is a clunky interview, but he handles it with admirable grace and charm.
I gave a like to that video, only for how Mr Cohen answers to that woman's questions..what a classy speech he had , great mind.. his voice reflects a kind of wisdom not many people have... some of the questions were asked in a rude way, but he is such a gentle artist and a very great one!
A humbled and wiser man is always worth listening to . .
I wouldn't want to answer this woman, how insensitive can you be! Big respect for Leonard!
He was just incredible. I know that's an overused descriptive word, but I cannot say enough about Leonard Cohen's contribution to the world.
It's amazing how the times have changed in talking about depression. When you grow up in an age where it is looked upon as a failing or stigmatized even in the sixties To it was something you hid. There are times I still cannot believe I made it this far. The main thing that I finally learned was that feeling of inertia and fear of making the wrong move, passes it's not forever. It is still very difficult but I know it's not the end. I am glad that is easier to talk about for the ones who suffer from this demon.
I've heard his songs scored to a couple of movies and that brought me here. I like this guy.
Of course I love Leonard Cohen but this interviewer is the the best I've ever seen. In spite of other comments here she asked all the right questions unselfconsciously. The questions I would have asked.
she's Awful !!!
RIP Mr Cohen ♡
striking humility
Leonard was a true poet , he worked on his darkness and revealed himself in so many masterpieces. He was truly an amazing artist , you either appreciated his intellectual deliverance or you missed out on such an amazing profound experience of his songs enriched by his poetic lyrics.
So beautiful. I really appreciate they way he articulates his (my) experience with depression. Forwarding it to my friends.
💖 good night Leonard..see ya on the other side.💖
Love Mr. Cohen's ability to be even-handed and laugh at himself... a bit of his personality shines through, despite the clunky mechanical style of the interview. Picturing the maestro Leonard Cohen being pelted by an automatic tennis server is classic.
What a gracious, insightful person. His humility is real. This guy rules.
he is one awesome dude.
Leonard Cohen was such a gem
and still is.
That man is the essence of enlightenment
Leonard Cohen shows many qualities during this interview. My perception may be wrong, but the interviewer could learn much from this interview, receive some wonderful gifts from it, listening to herself and the way her questions were dealt with again after a few years.
Wow! That is a brutal interviewer. I would have a difficult time sharing anything with her.
I love him.
What endurance! What an intelligence! The very good lesson for all of us how to behave in public with people like this "journalist".
As for being a father, this is the best poem on the planet:
This Be The Verse, BY PHILIP LARKIN
They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.
But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.
Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.
This woman is a brute....

The interwiever is awful ! What an unsensivity also in her voice! A too stupid woman for Leonard Cohen, however, he is an absolute Gentleman
I agree Janet. The interviewer lack depth and empathy , it sounds more like an interrogation
igreet abuddha and wish enlightenment for you&me
as well as for the interviewer!
Thinking back to the sort-of electric shock that his first álbum provided me, it's wonderful to
see this Canadian dude kept questioning, wondering, experimenting and finally deciding to
deal with things in a creative way,.
