- This is not a good change, it's a GREAT change!
I hop off my BMW1300GS and hop on this, to see these "Road" changes are keeping up with the benchmark.

For the difference of 14lbs between the R 1300 GS and the Africa Twin Adv Sports ES I would take the weight penalty to get the extra 110km of fuel range any day of the week.
Reliable, beautiful, dct, best sounding adv bike
Excellent review. Im trading my 2023 GS Rallye Low for the Africa Twin ES DCT, hopefully next month. I test rode the BMW GS1300 and although it was somewhat slightly better than my 23, the price is now out of my league. its near 30K or over 30K depending on model in the USA. Bye, bye, BMW. Cant wait for my Honda.
You wont regret it. Been riding a CRF 1000-L DCT with lowered suspension and a 19" front wheel for the last 3 years. Just bought the new one to for all the bells and whistles, but the ride is almost the same. have fun.
Also they make a gear changer for the DCT to add a extra level of fun, its not cheap at £400+ but i think i am going to get it because its a better manual gear change than the paddles.
@@stevo8629 how does that work? you can convert it into a manual?
@faridb40 it works just like the paddles. It just simulates a gear shift. I am going to get it, I think because shifting would feel more like a geared bike.
As a BMW GSA fan,I do think the African Twin has one of the best Adventure bike looks on the road"
Scott
Your camera quality and angles are perfect...great job. Thanks
Thank you for the great review, you answer a lot of questions for many of us I am sure . I would like this , more street focused bike with the smaller wheels but in a slightly smaller package, and I know there are more options out there, but I still haven’t seen one that really stands out from the others. Someone did an article on the Tiger 900 Road focused version of their adventure bike said it was really nice but I think it’s high priced ..thanks again
One of your best videos, Scott!
I love your videos since I've been into motorcycles. Now I am looking to upgrade out of a small displacement adventure bike to a bigger one, this info is great!
Thanks very much for your detailed and comprehensive review (as usual). I switched over the ATAS 2024 DCT 2 months ago, coming from three years of GS 1250 (standard) ans a few more BMWs in the last 20 years. What thrilled me was the DCT option mainly. I have to admit that from the pure "technical" point of view I'm very satisfied with my choice. At the same time I think the "driving feeling" of the GS is more solid and refined, like it is in a different category from the ATAS. We'll see in the next few months if the Honda is 100% convincing me. Best 🤞👍👍
Yet again, a brilliant review
Great reviews Scott ! I'm trying to hang on until the BMW 1300-1400 GSA debuts in the fall , choices are getting more difficult now between the GS 1300 & the 2024 African Twin. 😁
Great video Scott
Best reviewer!! Nice video! Thanks!
I've alwasy like the look of the Africa Twin, but for long rides in super comfort I can't find anything better the my GSA adventure bike wise
One of the best ADV’s out there. I want to see you test the new Suzuki S1000GX+.
So do I! If I can get my hands on one, I'll find out this week - fingers crossed!
5-6 lbs is insignificant except on some manufacturers bag sheet. Heck, most riders could stand to lose 5-10 lbs with good diet and exercise. Problem solved and you're healthier for it.
Very nice looking bike, smoother as any other in this segment, reliable and top capablility for touring. These are its weapons, and I don't think at all they're minor reasons.
It’s fun to just look at. It’s the best looking adv bike year after year
An excellent review Scott, particularly of the turbulence and vibration aspects on the motorway. You have also brought out the DCT dinosaurs ie those who have never tried DCT and therefore who can’t comprehend just what a game changing piece of technology it is. Thank you.
As a fully qualified dinosaur, in one of his senior moments, I bought a Honda Rebel 1100 DCT. It has much the same engine as in the AT under review. To be frank, I hated the DCT because I never felt fully in control of the machine. Yes, I tried the manual flipper as well. Now, having regressed to dinosaur form, I ride a nice, tame and obedient CB1000R. It has a stalk on the left handlebar and another near my left foot. I cannot imagine how someone would feel confident with DCT on what pretends to be an off-road bike. And a massive weight at that.
@m2menuiserie540 Mate, I am going out on a limb and call you out. I don't think you ever actually owned any dct model. As a dinosaur I imagined this is not the first time you spinner this type of comment on a dct review. The whole "fully in control" story does not make sense anymore. Anyone that has ever owned a dct bike will tell you. Evidently you have never ridden a bike with a quick shifter.
@@onskyk My 2022 Goldwing DCT is the best bike I've ever owned. The short CZcams clip showing a DCT Goldwing out sprint the manual is worth a watch. The quick shifter on my Aprillia Tuono 1100 V4 is good for that bike, but DCT is better.
@@onskyk I had the Rebel 1100 DCT for a year. It was my only bike. The reason I kept it for so long was that I had to wait nearly six months for my new CB1000RA Black Edition to be delivered. It is equipped with a quick shifter as standard. Don't fret too much, the dinosaurs died out.
Brilliant objective review
Thanks Mr nothing to prove.
Thank you great review
Very nice loving the 19” front and reduced ride height. I decided against buying one a few years ago as I felt uncomfortable being barely able to get my feet down. The DCT is awesome however not for everyone albeit I’m sure once the novelty wears off most are ridden in D as a twist and go rather than playing around with paddle shift same as in a Car.
Good review Scott, another one on my list next change, having a mere 29” inseam it might fit me now, shame about the weight but it seems too be well balanced, may I ask the model of your suit?
I swapped my NT1100 for a 1300GS, and now every twisty road puts a grin on my face. While riding the NT1100, I used to think about what I'd do when I reached my destination. On the 1300GS, I find myself pondering which roads I can explore along the way.
this is the way.
I have a 2023 manual adventure sport, wish i went DCT as i had 2016 DCT prior but couldnt justify the 2500£ difference.
10,000kms done, enjoying it. Id love the extra 7% torque for the 2024 but not with a reduced front suspension not 19 wheel as i sometimes do off road
You can shift in a DCT bike with your left foot as usual. If you spec it that way.
Since German automotive engineering quality went down the toilet, I would choose a Japanese built Africa Twin anytime over anything German. I had new German cars for decades, not any more sadly. Good review thank you.
That laugh says it all to me.😃
Did you try riding in manual mode?
I like my 2017 AT in manual mode.
Love your videos, two thumbs up 👍👍
Yep, that's fun too! Loved it 👍
Your insight is always appreciated, thank you.
However, it is unfair to state basic GS1300 weight, b/c, if I`m not mistaken, that is w/o electronic suspension, which is included on AT. Taking into account Africa`s larger fuel tank, manual transmission bike is actually lighter than the GS.
One cannot get a GS without Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA), it's been that way for a long time. If my memory serves me correctly it became "standard" some where in the middle of the 1200GS production run.
So to be fair you have to put the electronic suspension on the AT to be fair to the GS. 😊
@@NothingToProve I am not so sure. UK Motorrad clearly lists DSA under "optional equipment", and at the bottom of the dimension/weight specs it says the following:
"1) According to Guideline (EU) 168/2013 with all operating fluids, with standard equipment and refuelled with min. 90% of the usable fuel tank capacity."
My dream machine.
Trading in my 2022 on a 2024 next week. Losing $7k USD, but it's worth it, IMO. I really want the lower suspension/center of gravity and smaller front wheel since I only ride it on the road.
It's the closest thing to the NT 1100 I'm ever likely to get in the U.S.
i have been riding a 2017 Africa twin DCT for 3 years with a 19" front wheel and lowered suspension and its really close to the new 2024 version with 19" front wheel. only drawback is that it is a 1000cc and not 1100. thats why i just bought the new 2024 CRF1100-L Adventure Sports ES DCT.
Great video. I’ve been riding GSA’s for 10 years and love them. Then i tried a new RT and was very tempted to change. However, the Honda with DCT really has my attention - it’s a shame BMW don’t have it yet. My problem is I hate chain drives!!!
1st world problems eh? 😂
Just wait, BMW just announced their version of DCT, calling it ASA (Automatisierten Schaltassistenten) Automated Shift Assistant.
When and on what bikes they will put it on is still a mystery. But, it's coming, next year or the year after...don't know.
Yeah, read that 👍 however, I can’t risk a new bike in London. I had a new GSA in June 2023 and it was stolen within two month. I went back to a 2016 model - which was also less than half the price!!
Hi Scott, great review as always👍
Sorry for the question, but I have to ask you: I'm looking at the moment to buy a new adventure bike (only roads riding, without any off road), and my choice is between mid class 2024 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro, or 2024 Africa Twin Adventure Sport Manual ES. I've tested the Tiger and I really like it, unfortunately I can't test ride the new Africa, but from all the reviews sounds like a great bike too. Which one would you prefer, because you rode both of them? Thanks.
Thank you!
For me I'd take the 900 GT Pro not the Rally, especially since you don't need off-road or unless you are tall, then the Rally. The AT is good but it's clinical/sterile and is just a tool like a car to get from point a to b.
I have a 21' ATAS manual, the last year they were sold in North America, and I have to say it is the funnest bike I,ve ever had. The 24's are supposed to be coming to North America and I would be very interested to see if the 19" front wheel is that much better on road. In 26k miles it's done it all very well. Gravel and dirt roads are easy even two up and from Arkansa to South Dakota traveling with a bunch of Goldwings it did great. Side note I traded my 22' Goldwing for a 23' RT and loving it, how's your RT doing?
I'll never sell it, bikes will come and go but the RT will always stay in my garage! 👍
Wish there would have been some offroad gravel or dirt to see your thoughts. nothing super technical but would be nice to know for offroad camping etc. Thanks for. the great review
Aqui Brasil, muito obrigado pela tradução PT
On the weight discussion: the gs1300 lost weight, but also lost its place as a grand adventurer/tourer. Test rode one today. Its half the bike it was. Narrow, low, toy like. Crap/no weather protection, joke screen. Feels like an overpowered, overweight supermoto, with all the supermoto disadvantages and no advantages, in touring terms. I m afraid they will lose half their customers once these new owners start touring this summer. Perhapsmthey will rectify this with an extra fat GSA.
Anyway, ATAS are brilliant bikes for one up touring, Docile, soft, economic, reliable, comfortable and fast enough -just.
I switched from an NT1100, which is renowned for its good weather protection, to a 1300GS and I haven't noticed any decline in protection against the elements.
I disagree on almost every point. In particular I really like the new electric windscreen.
You are liar, you not rode gs1300 bcs wind protection is awesome. Best off all adv bikes
Strange, every review rated the 1300 better than the 1250.
Thank you sir for a very nuanced review.
Just a quick question, Honda Austalia offers 4 grands on their 2023 models. I'm planning to buy one and not sure if the improvements worth passing by 4k? Thanks
The torque increase and improvements to the DCT is worth it to me. But hey, 4k is 4k 🤷♂️
@@NothingToProve thanks for the reply. I’ll buy the adventure sport in manual anyway.
Just too heavy. Even heavier than my KTM 1290 SAR monster. I was very tempted by this Honda, until I saw the weight. No, I do not really care that the weight disappears when the bike moves. What is important is picking this bike up and manoeuvring it around in loose gravel surfaces, heaven forbid muddy also.
The new ATAS isn't focused on offroad, the standard AT instead is (and is 6Kg lighter than the KTM). Also, this ATAS is equipped with DCT, without it weights only 6Kg heavier.
The only bike I really hated. It was very heavy and tiring to ride.
@@TheWuselnHonda bikes are always way heavier than they declare in the specs. The AT isn't an exception...
kTM is one of the most honest in this field. Both great bikes, perhaps...
It’s a road bike now bro. But going from your SAR to an ATAS now would be dumb.
Buy a car
Same bike. Will Honda E-clutch be an effective replacement or substitute for DCT? Only adds 4 pounds to base AT.
Honda almost touched the right spot with this one, besides the weight and the two hands windshield maneuvering set…This could be it. This clutch less bikes, DCT and any other systems like Yamaha released on the FJR years ago, still bug me, strong. I like the quick shifter device as an option for that days you feel like riding a little more aggressively, but no clutch, no shifter pedal? 🧐🤨Is this a giant scooter or an big Adventure electric bike? It’s none? Ok. So, why I’m feeling like it would be like it…? I liked it in cars. And I adapted fast. But two wheels, is a very different vehicle. I don’t know, I'm skeptical about it. Clutch less, key less? What’s the next “less” thing? Riders less?😂
Yes, you can read a book while riding! 🤣🤣
@@NothingToProve Exactly😩😂
Not being able to change the height of the windshield manually while walking is a matter of Honda's safety philosophy. Either it does it stationary or it has an electrical system like the Goldwing.
The Africa has a gearshift pedal option for the DCT.
The DCT shifts faster than any quickshifter.
Honda launched the e-clutch for the CB 650. It has a clutch but if you want, you can let the bike activate it alone, even when leaving or stopping. It only adds 2 kg, is faster and works better than any quickshifter (but loses to the DCT). And you must change gears using the pedal.
@@wallacemjr it’s good to have those options. If we want to go fully automatic the DCT is on, but it’s good to have the option not to use it, if we prefer to ride on a more manual or traditional manner. 👍🏻
I tried a Yamaha Tmax scooter 560 but I soon got bored not having a clutch & gear shifter.
How would you compare this to the Tiger 900 GT Pro. The Tiger has more HP, a little less torque, but weighs about 60lbs less. The DCT on the AT is a big draw but the quick shifter on the Tiger is excellent. I found the Tiger to have quicker steering, better egos for a big guy, and more fun to ride, plus a few thousand less. Thoughts?
Nice Bike
dct is great for touring
6:44 well... I Trust this lough 😂😂😂.
even without being on a budget I'd take the Honda all day long ...
Nice review Scott but how does the seat height work? You said it was 835 that’s just under 33 inches but you said easy to flat foot it with bent legs on a 32 inch inseam.
Good question -- note that seat height measures from floor to seat, but your ability to touch the ground can vary based on seat width (which is not taken into account). Inseam typically measures from inside you crotch to around the ankle (ie: where your jeans would go down to), and doesn't take into account the foot and heel (typically another few inches each side).
Well, the new thing with the suspension is that it will "relax" at low speed and stopped, meaning in goes down a few mm.
@@NothingToProve I notice on my GS that if my wife is on the pillion and after she gets off I reduce the preload that if I’m sat on the bike it goes just that little bit lower than it does if I get off first.
The GS (Dynamic ESA) will go higher or lower based on the setting too. Have it in road mode and then while stopped and running change it to Dynamic mode, you will feel it get a few mm higher and do it in reverse too the same effect in will go down a few mm. The system will try to accommodate the weight that it is carrying, I call it "auto pre-load", trying to find the optimal travel distance.
I want to tell you what happened to me about this bike.
First of all, I was a Honda fan until I bought this motorbike.
After buying this motorbike, my perspective on Honda is really close to zero.
I own a 2020 model L4 Dct adventure sport.
Malfunctions that happened to me: 1: there is a suspension failure, it cannot cope with high weight and explodes. Suspension set changed 2 times.
Dct: once the gearbox locked while driving at 110 km per hour on the motorway. I faced death.
Infotainment: Sometimes the screen freezes when Apple CarPlay is connected or does not connect Apple CarPlay if the engine waits in the sun.
Rust: Rusting occurs in the chassis in all versions of this engine after 2019. When I discussed this with Honda service, they say that the situation occurred due to external factors. Of course I can't keep a 250+kg motorbike in my bedroom.
Electrical parts: one of the fuses of the engine constantly blows. In the middle of Handem Ynin, I drove 120 km in the dark of night in the middle of the night completely intuitively without any light. The response of the Honda service was that it was a problem that occurred in these models and they changed the fuse free of charge (what if the fuse changes after death, what if it does not change). Last month, ABS malfunction occurred, and since TCs was connected to the same sensor, it was also disabled, and we realised that the fuse burned again.
On the other hand, in Turkey, the Ministry of Interior police department is cancelling about 250 AT L1 models ordered to Honda Turkey due to suspension and electronic failures. R1200gs, F850gs, vfr1200 models, which have completed their service life and are in idle condition, have been overhauled, renewed and put into use until the delivery of 500 1300gs ordered.
The main reason for this return is that the front suspension of the police officer in Istanbul exploded while chasing the criminal and the officer was injured and taken to intensive care.
Instead of Africas, they buy 500 R1300GS and Ktm. There is also a video on CZcams about the delivery of these 500 engines.
Africa Twin is a motorcycle that Honda made to take place in that class and I think it is a motorcycle that Honda did not spend any effort on it. maybe cheaper ktm, triumph or bmw can be bought in the 900cc band, which is lighter, or 1300gs, tiger1200, 1290adv can be bought for similar money.
I started motorcycling at the age of 21, I am now 41 years old, I have owned over 20 motorcycles and I have personally experienced that Honda's motorcycle quality is far and far behind its competitors in today's conditions.
I regret selling my vfr1200 croosstourer motorbike.
😂😂😂😂
Wow, sorry to hear of your experience, but thank you for letting us all know. I had believed the story that Honda reliability was legendary, no more it seems!
No problems with my Adventure DCT 2022
Does Honda have anything other than the Goldwing that has shaft drive
NT1100 OR AT? What to choose?
Japanese engineering. ❤❤❤
they should have given the transalp a 19 inch front wheel aswell
Alot of talking about Honda making seat height lower, but that comes maybe mostly from 1 inch less radius on the front wheel?. Even if the engine is good, i was hoping for a bigger engine upgrade. Honda is behind competition compare to Bmw/Ktm/Triumph.
2" less wheel diameter and 20mm less suspension travel and a few other things I mentioned in the video.
Have you ever ridden in one? Because Africa sometimes seems to be more powerful than others that announce larger numbers.
@@wallacemjr Yes, i have ridden one. The engine is strong, but it lacks power compare to the competing bikes.
I wish Honda made adventure sports in basic trim, without dct and electronic suspension. I would be great competition to vstrom 1050.
But she does, it's basic Africa
@@wallacemjr in my country ATAS is available only with ES
Nice what's the horse power and torque
Ahh...chart...
No way, not even my 2012-GS would make the change here. Just came home from a wonderfull “First-may-drive” with my wife. Perfect 👌🏻, even offroad in France/ some TET sections can be done, weight: 230 kg, cost: 7.600 € ❤💪🏻😍👍🏻 GS forever
I traded my 2022 ATAS ES DCT for a 2024 R1250RT. Yes the DCT is great but for touring 2 up with luggage the dedicated machines like the RT are way better.
Biggest minuses to the Honda:
Weak brakes
Soft suspension
Wobbling at higher speeds
Seat is a nightmare
Drive mode is simply unusable, only SI upwards
I did 24k Kms on it but the brakes and suspension on the BMWs are simply the best
Agreed! I'll never sell my 2021 1250 RT! To get a better 2-up bike one would have to go way heavier, like a Goldwing or K1600 but that's too much weight for me.
@@NothingToProve I had the K1600 before the Africa twin and yes it's a great 2up touring machine, but I wanted to try the RT which is more nimble. Now the Goldwing is fantastic but it's way to expensive compared to the BMWs. I hope the I will keep the RT for longer than 1 year now 🤣
Oh well, in a side-by-side comparison, the AF twin and the 1300 GS are worlds apart. The AF is missing several key features like adaptive cruise control, linked brakes, and shaft drive. It also has more vibrations, suffers from brake dive, and the CRF1100 engine doesn’t really excite-it delivers power but lacks the punch you might expect.. Honda could have taken a great leap forward by adding electronic suspension and adaptive cruise control to the NT1100, transforming it into a touring bike that not only leads its class in comfort but also puts its competitors on notice.
I would appreciate it if you could tell me how to lower the seat height to 795.
Low seat option
@@NothingToProve from 835 to 795 only low seat?
I just put a deposit on a manual versions because DCT hadn’t coming in yet. Should I wait for the DCT or stay with manual version?
Wait for DCT. You vil not regret.
Agreed, although it does take more than a short few hours ride to appreciate it. As Scott said S1mode is likely to be better than D for most people. After 2900 miles on my DCT I'd never go back to a manual gearbox.
Wait for DCT.
I decided to wait for DCT. Thank you for your input 👍 Hallelujah! I truly feel it’s the right decision. God bless all you and keep you all safe when riding. Thanks again.
I bought a R1250 GS Trophy BMW in 2023... and I've ridden a 2022 AC with DCT.... and truthfully, I'd rather have a 6 manual with quickshift, any time I ride, be in Honda or BMW. Call me a control freak, it just feels right to me.
Now they just need a decent motor in it >= 125BHP
Honda’s primary issue is with the CRF1100 engine, which is distinctly lackluster-it's overly linear and underpowered. Among its peers, Honda’s 1100 engine is the weakest in 2024. To mask this deficiency, Honda employs a strategy where the DCT automatically drops two gears upon full throttle application.
The GS1300 is not an adventurebike anymore, that s the reason for the lighter weight!
Is it me, or yours BMW engine make noise like there is something wrong with valves?
Yep and yep and yep and beats me, I'm frustrated with the sound it makes.
@@NothingToProvejust trade it 😅n for a Guzzi Stelvio 🙂
The Stelvio is the best sounding ADV bike out there today, bar none, imho. When you hear is start up, you think, "oh yeeeeaaa, that's how a bike is supposed to sound".
I also own a 1300GS and it runs smoothly with a normal engine sound, free from any unusual ticks or clicks.
The Africa Twin is not really heavier than the GS 1300. The stated weight of the GS is completely without equipment, even without a center stand! Keep that in mind!
I would always prefer the AT of the GS, because Honda simply has the better and more reliable technology.
Die Africa Twin ist nicht wirklich schwerer als die GS 1300. BMW hat einfach gemogelt. Das angegebene Gewicht der GS ist komplett ohne Ausstattung, selbst ohne Hauptständer! Keep that in mind!
Ich würde jederzeit die AT der GS bevorzugen, denn Honda hat einfach die bessere und zuverlässigere Technik.
Add ESA and shaft drive to the AT 231kg and the AT is over the the base GS weight of 237kg. I like both bikes about the same, so we can go on and on about comparing bikes, but the bottom line is which one you like best 👍😊
As far as I know the weight of the DCT hasn't changed; onlysoftware upgrades as the mechanical components are already near perfect.
With the 7% increase in torque, they had to beef-up several components in not just the DCT but the whole drive train. That is why the whole bike in the trim in the video increased by 3kgs from last year to this year.
@@NothingToProve
Is this upgrade only for the Africa Twin, or will it be available for the NT1100, etc?
Tried one and got sore arse and felt I was on, instead of in.
Is this 🏍 bike for tall people❓️
I'm 5'-4" 😢😭
They offer a short seat.
Own the ATA ES manual 2023, way too heavy, terrible brakes, t7 next
Too bad it doesn’t have a SHAFT !!
Honda has become a joke for performance oriented ADV bike buyers. Too heavy, not enough power, DCT is for lazy riders, too soft suspension, and the bike has had quality issues since introduction.
You nailed it 🐢
Honda needs moore power ( +30 ). Motor is so booring to ride .....I dont like it ...😅
It's a long stroke, fairy low compression motor for longevity, easy manners and to be less fussy about fuel octane.
As a recent owner of a '21 adventure sport, I'd rather have firmer suspension and stronger braking.
Weldings look terrible
It's really overpriced, overweight, underpowered and only a 2 year warranty. Compared to the 1290 SAS and even the 1300GS. A value alternative will be the V strom 1050.
Here in Brazil (it is manufactured here and in Japan, including the DCT) it lasts for 3 years without km limit and there is still assistance and rescue in the field in several countries in the region.
That swing arm looks 💩
Buy a GoldWing and be your true self. Otherwise buy an adventure bike. This isn’t it.
