    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Před 3 lety +1

      @@OmkarNevse it's all that matters, right? Either you need to be explained what it sounds like or you have to be able to hear it. For that last reason I am now also making a massive series of identical recordings of different speakers. If the amount of speakers recorded gets large enough chances are that people will know at least one of the speakers showcased, and can use those as a reference for how they are comparing. That's impossible with headphones so all I can do is talk. I am sure not everyone is going to agree though, I listen with trained, audiophile ears but if you are used to cheap sennheisers you are used to way more bass than I would deem reasonable. Reference is always a tricky one as it matches with your perception. There's things in sound that are objectively good or bad but there's always a matter of taste and (p)reference. I am happy you feel like I this review helps you make a somewhat educated guess though!

    I've had these for about 6 months now, purchased for teleconferencing and maybe some quick audio editing for work. I was shocked to discover how good they were for listening. I find that the upper end responds well to EQ and will claw back detail on the top end from that dip. Comfort -to- SQ ratio is so good that these are now my daily drivers over more expensive sets.

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Před 3 lety +6

      I tested then with an x-can V2 preamp today, with JJ tubes in it. Highs were a lot more transparent. Sometimes affordable audio responds really well to fancy equipment

      @@rollingtroll that's awesome! I've got them plugged into a mediocre behringer umc202hd and it does the job fine, but I need to scrounge up a better amplifier. I see a few of x-cans on hifishark ... very tempting!!

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Před 3 lety +4

      @@someguy9440 Go V2 though! The V1 really isn't that great. Want a budget tip? Find a defective Nakamichi CR3 or LX3 cassette recorder that still works electronically, they make amazing headphone preamps. For the LX3 you need a tape to put it in rec mode though, cr3 has a tape/source switch as it's a 3 head deck.
      If you are willing to spend more, look at Chord. Great headamps.

      The thing with CZcams is being consistent. I'm starting to notice that people like what I do, so I'll try to upload a bit more consistently. My channel was mostly there just to share my findings with friends and on forums/facebook groups, never planned to gain an audience here but now that I'm closing in on 1k subscribers, I am thinking that maybe I should carry on doing this.
      I ordered the K52's the evening of your comment and only got them yesterday so this is as fast as I could. There's really no reason not to buy them at this price range, except if you love a bright, crispy sound. If you don't mind it a bit more laid back, they are great. They sound the opposite of cheap, it's only the highs that give it away.

    Amazing review, and I completely love your sense of humor. Really considering on buying a pair of these, I own a pair of Sennheiser HD599, but I need a pair of good sounding, closed back headphones for a cheap price, and your open minded review really gave me the confidence of deciding on these headphones. I used to own the AKG K511, amazing pair of headphones for that price and I miss that sound, I feel too spoiled with the HD599's nowadays for casual use AND mixing/critical listening :D

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Před 2 lety +3

      Since you're used to more upmarket headphones I'd also consider looking at AudioTechnica at a maybe slightly higher price range. I don't know exactly what they got in stock right now, but every time I heard them I thought they were ridiculous value for money.
      I can't say the AKG K52 are 'that' closed. They technically are, but they definitely don't close your ears off. How about the BeyerDynamic DT150? I think that's the best sounding affordable closed back pair of headphones I've heard. Sure, they are a lot more expensive than the K52 but I'm seriously considering getting a pair one day.
      Really happy you enjoyed the review! Despite covid, I've actually been insanely busy and haven't been able to do any in-depth videos lately. There's loads of plans though. Pity headphone manufacturers don't sponsor me. But hey, I'm at an audio show soon, may want to ask some questions ;).

      @@rollingtroll Thank you for the quick answer, and all the tips!
      And I know what you mean, the K52's are probably not completely isolating sound from the outside, but comparable to the HD599's (you can literally hear EVERYTHING with them on and with music on), they probably would fit me personally.
      The DT150 looks like an awesome pair of headphones, but the thing for me is the overall clamp-force or whatever you can call it can be problematic for me (ATH-M20x is a perfect example, also the SteelSeries Arctis 5 and Logitech G633, I've got a humongous head and it's annoying as f*, lol), since when I use headphones I like them to be rather loose-fitting on my head. Also availability for buying them and shipping them to Sweden with the least shipping costs since I'm on a budget is a problem.
      Headphone manufacturers SHOULD sponsor you, since reviewers like you are needed. ;D

      Even from combiningtexts you can derive a lot! Check my AirPods max review for a laugh ;). They are definitely good for a bass player. They don’t have overwhelming low end but are very defined so it won’t become one big mush of bass like sennheiser would do at this price range. Should be easy to follow exactly what you play. With the highs being these headphones weak point bass guitar seems a perfect use case!

      It's just that the original brand discs are rattly, but if you take them off there's a hole so you need to put something on that :D.
      I could never get these off by the way, I did succesfully do it with the Samson SR850 (made a review of that years ago) and it was a major upgrade. It's not necessary on super well built headphones obviously, this was just to stop a bit of aluminium rattling :D.

      The less contact points the better, so if you can use it without the adapter always go for that option!
      I would personally always go K240, Beyer has the tendency to overdo the highs, except for the DT100 and DT150. Bare in mind though; the DT100 has virtually no bass, it's really for monitoring voices. The DT150 had beautiful bass.

    i just bought this headphone and its really good, for gaming, for music, mixing, recording, you just got to get use to it, i was using a cheap "gaming" headset before and it was more bassy so when comparing the two of them, the akg seemed a bit weak on that matter, it is subjective, it all depends on what you are used to listen to, but the akg k52 is way sharper and way cleaner than most of more expensve headphones, you just have to get used to it, and when you do it sounds better than most of headphones i tried, also the virtual surround is perfect on that thing

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Před 3 lety +1

      Pretty much all headphones are overdoing low end these days, it's quite exhausting. The AKG definitely isn't light on the low end, but many laptops and built-in sound interfaces in motherboards are, so chances are that you're not really getting the best from the K52. That said, AKG does tend to put some emphasis on the midrange, where most cheap headphones completely lack that (it's all highs and lows). What you should do; Listen ot the AKG's for a month or two, then switch back to what you had before. You'll probably laugh your ass off :D.

      What I mean about the highest highs is that the headphones do not reproduce anything over about 14-15khz. There's just nothing there, audibly. So if you are looking for super high frequencies in your mix, and you start pushing them up so you can hear them, it's probably going to be too much on more expensive headphones that do reveal those frequencies. So if you mix on the K52's, I'd steer clear of adding any EQ'ing or compression to frequencies over about 14khz. They are probably already there, they headphones just don't show them :D
