  • In our next video of the "Tour of Springs," we take a look at Wekiwa Springs State Park in Apopka, FL. This park offers a multitude of activities, ranging from canoeing/kayaking, swimming, hiking, camping, and even horseback riding. Miles of trails can be explored on foot and rivers can be paddled for hours. We started our day by renting a canoe and traveling down river to Wekiva Island, spotting many alligators and other wildlife along the shores. Once finished, we hopped into the water and swam around the head spring to enjoy the refreshing water. The cracks and crevasses were amazing and deep. Finally, we explored some of the trails and even explored the nearby campsite. The place was truly massive! Come along as we get acquainted with the beautiful area! 😎

My wife and i used to rent canoes at Wekiva Island (formerly, the Wekisa Marina?) As a teen, we used to jump into the water from the concrete bridge in your video. But my favorite story about Wekiva Springs was when my friends and i skipped school to go swimming. We rented canoes and the marina and paddled upstream to just outside the springs just past the bridge there inside the springs where the water opens back up into a larger pool in the river. We brought some beer with us, and we decided to go swimming the pool i mentioned. I guess we thought we were pretty cool, skipping school, treading water, and drinking beer. The six packs actually floated in the water with us. It was a non eventful day, and a most relaxing one. Now, fast forwarding into the future. As i said earlier, my wife and I liked to rent canoes at the marina to go down the river to fish. One day we decided to go up river to the big pool just outside the park, the same one I went swimming as a teen. We didn't catch anything, but right about 4pm, my wife and I started noticing all these familiar profiles in the duck weed all along the shore. Tons of alligators, and they weren't all small ones. We saw a gator about 10 to 12 feet long cruising through the lilly pads. Later, we heard one snapping his jaws shut on something. I couple of gators surfaced near our canoe and just stared at us. i slapped the paddle on the water in an attempt to scare them away, but it was to no avail. One of the gators submerged, and my wife said "Let's go NOW"! So, we started heading back to the marina, and as we were leaving, a medium sized gator swan right by our canoe in the opposite direction. I could have reached out and touched it (If I were incredibly stupid). I'm so very glad that irresponsible, drinking teenagers weren't the menu item of choice on the day we skipped school and went swimming in a body of water heavily infested with alligators. After watching more of this video, the body of water to which I was referring was the part beyond the little wooden bridge that has the sign stating "NO swimming beyond this point".

Crazy things we did when we were young! Definitely lucky nobody was eaten by an alligator. We saw a lot of them the day we visited especially by the bridge near Wekiva island. I think they do not like a lot of noise so maybe they were scared off. That area beyond the wooden bridge is very beautiful looking. It had lots of turtles in it when we visited and an Otter. We had a place to visit as a kid too which was Weeki Wachee Springs. Thanks for sharing your story! 🙂

This place looks great! The canoe trip to see the wildlife is cool on its own but that swimming area looks inviting. Thanks for sharing! I'll definitely have to check this place out. 😎
