    It's a song about consumerism and the "Wegwerfmentalität" (throw-away-mentality?) of modern society. If something falls down or breaks just get a new one. Alligatoah shows the consequences this has on the environment along with the negative impact of industrialization. In the chorus he connects "lass liegen" (leave it) with "lass liegen bleiben" (let's stay in bed) to criticize people not caring about these issues or the refugee crisis:
    "I was woken up by a tank this morning
    Let's stay in bed
    From underneath it a man was reaching out to us
    But we don't have room for him, leave him"
    As seen in the video, the trail behind him turns from trash to blood. My interpretation: Our western economies are responsible for environmental issues that than in turn cause violent conflicts around the world which result in people fleeing to Europe and we refuse to help them.
    The boomerang bit plays on the fact that a boomerang comes back to you when you throw it as a symbol for your actions having consequences that you should consider. He combines it with the German saying "Wie man in den Wald ruft, so schallt es zurück" (literally "The forest echoes back what you shout into it"). The English equivalent is probably "You reap what you sow":
    Like a boomerang I shout into the forest but forget that it can shout back
    Like a boomerang I like to throw away but I'm not good at catching

Not only is he singing quite fast, but his use of language is of course highly metaphorical and his play on words often is quite intricate. On top of that, it's hard to classify his music. Really awesome to see someone from another country hearing Alligatoah! He is a very unique musician, he doesn't get into one genre. He often mixes elements of rap music, pop music, sometimes even rock music and so on. His songs are very meaningful through the lyrics, I think it's hard to understand it when you're not a German native speaker. But there might be some translations online for that. :D This Song "Lass Liegen" is kinda about the "throwaway society" and the problem of the waste everywhere in contrast to the people who don't care about these problems and just chill.
    If you are more interested you should view the song "Wie Zuhause" by him, it's kind of a rhapsody and the song is a bit slower than this one. And if you are into rock/metal you should view the live performance of him with his former band "Trailerpark" feat. Hämatom of the song "Bleib in der Schule"! It was a special collaboration for the Wacken metal festival in Germany. Absolutely awesome!
    That's what I also like him for. He is not going for the mass success but rather for his own ideas and ideals. Oh and he got always pretty crazy ideas. So for the last album, he went to Kenia and made a safari concert in the steppes there. The videos are also on CZcams. A crazy dude but very sympathic. I've been at two concerts of him already and was almost in the front row. Pretty awesome experiences!
    Oh and also, big respect for you learning German. I think it's one of the most difficult languages to learn for someone non-native. And we Germans know that. :D

  • @OldNerdTV
    @OldNerdTV Před 3 lety +4

    The part with "bo-bo-boomerang" is a play on a trashy euro trash song by Blümchen from the 90s, there are a lot of pop-culture references that I guess are very hard to understand for someone who did not grow up in Germany at the same time, but that's Aligatoah for you. I'd suggest "Sterben kannst Du überall" from Trailerpark but that might be a little too hard for an American ;)
    So, on the one hand this song is about boundless consumerism, buying stuff that will be obsolete and trash tomorrow, on the other hand it points the finger at us as a rich country (tank on top of a person who reaches out to us, so war and refugees) saying we have no room, not helping when we could.

    - Willst du (Do you want, a song about drug abuse, probably Alligatoahs most successful song)

  • @TheMrHankypanky
    @TheMrHankypanky Před 3 lety +13

    It's like a constant bombardment of metaphors and also rather specifically satirically targeting German culture (though also western culture as a whole). And without the video, probably quite a lot of Germans wouldn't even understand... maybe other than that the song has something to do with the environment. "lass liegen" ("throw away"; literally "leave behind") also means "don't care about" in German, which is a central part of the song and it's also ironic to make it more complicated I guess... (and also more fun, if you can get it - a lot of Alligatoah's songs are quite fun; most are quite sharp and might also be quite provocativ - this one maybe a bit, but in comparison not so much) - Alligatoah is definitly not so easy to understand: Most of the time his words don't actually mean what they're saying.

  • @ContinuumGaming
    @ContinuumGaming Před 3 lety +3

    There is a saying "Wie Du in den Wald hineinrufst, so schalt es heraus." which the song kind of referes to. In general it means: The way you treat somebody, s/he will treat you back.
    Or in short: Be nice to others if you want them to be nice to you. The song is about polution and "throw away"-societies which do not give a sh*** about what happens with the garbage they leave behind. "Gerösteter Panda" is an especially malicious exaggeration... Pandas are very rare and somebody who would kill them, grill them and eat them and after one bite throws it away because it does not taste good would be just the worst person available.

Downside is that the lyrics are even harder to understand, but here you might wanna check out his savanna concert (without audience, in the desert), the Autokino shows (clearer audio and a very unique view) and the Wacken 2020 stream (the band goes even harder). Some of my favorites are "Ein Problem Mit Alkohol", "Terrorangst", "Du Bist Schön".

    My fav line from it
    "Hörst du nicht den vogel singen? Er zwitschert bloß Hymnen auf die seen in denen sogar die fische oben schwimmen.
    Hörst du nicht die schöne möwe neben der öl fabrik? Ich würde gerne verstehen was sie sagt! ("Töte mich") "
    (loose translation: )
    "Dont you hear the bird singing? He is singing hymns to the lakes where even the fish swim on the surface.
    Dont you hear the pretty seagull next to the oil refinery? I would like to understand what its saying! ("Kill me") "
    "I shout into the forest but i forget that it can shout too" Its a german saying,basically you reap what you sow.
    He poluted his soroundings (the forest,literaly in this case) but he wasnt expecting things to go bad and reacting to his actions.

    You should definitely check out more Alligatoah songs - "Willst du" or "Wo kann man das kaufen" are great.
    You could also give "Verliebt" by Antilopen Gang a try. :) The pronunciation is pretty clear in this one. And it's not as fast as many of the Alligatoah songs.

    oh no, I feel so sorry for you! There are more slow songs by Alligatoah! For example 'Wie Zuhause', 'Ein Problem mit Alkohol', 'Füttern Verboten'. There are always a few fast parts in his songs but these have a slower hookline/Refrain/Chorus (?) (I don't know the word right now)

    Aligatoah is strangely connecting the liyrics to the beat. its hard to understand sometimes even for germans^^
    the song, in my understanding, is mainly about something we germans call "Wegwerfkultur" so something like "Throw-away-mentallity". it critizised the fact, that often times its easier (and cheaper) to buy something new and throw the old away, than to fix/renew the old. if you watch cloesely he even "leaves" his ex-girlfriend or the "Panda" in his tracks. it also can be a metaphor for not dealing with actual problem, rather than just ignoring ("leaving") them.
    Aligatoah is a great artist. his music is very diverse and he is super "zweideutig"(ambiguous i think? lot of the said word, has two or more meanings. even by the way he pronounciates)

    It's basically about the human made pollution. We pollute the enviroment (trow away/ just leave it), but in the end everything comes back to us like micro plastic and heavy metal contaminated fish that causes health issues, carbon emissions that cause draughts and flods, fresh water contamination, bee extinction, insect overpopulation due to missing natural predetors (like a boomerang/ catching). It's a very political theme packed into a song. It's really nice to see people react to his music.

    I think the man under the tank „raising his hand“ is referring to the double meaning of that action. „Anbieten“ means „to offer“ but „bieten“ rather translates to „bidding“ like in an auction. So the man obviously reaches out for help but the action isn’t perceived as that but rather as a „gesture of capitalism“. That’s only my interpretation, though.
    The boomerang-bridge of the song is referring to the German saying „Wie du in den Wald hinein rufst, so schallt es zurück“ meaning „The way you shout into the forest it shall come back”. The forest represents nature: destroying nature means destroying our own resources of living. So we are good at throwing away (waste) but we’re not good at catching (dealing with the consequences of our pollution of the earth).
    I hope I clarified things a little for you.
    The thing with Alligatoah is his songs have meanings on so many different levels like poems/plays from Goethe or Shakespeare that sometimes it is hard to grasp all of it.

    Yeh, Alligatoah can be a bit difficult to keep up with, even as a native speaker. It just offers such a high density of metaphors and puns and he tends to re-interpret figures of speech, it's all quite witty.
    A lot of his works are also about sociopolitical topics, like Lass Liegen which is obviously criticizing consumerism and the modern western throwaway society that would rather throw away something valuable than putting any effort into preserving it (the line about the porcellain for instance - it's expensive, it's valuable and it wouldn't be reasonable to just leave it there, just because it got a bit dirty. It's about this attitude of just throwing stuff out without a care in the world and without any respect for the things you throw away and the effort that might have gone into making it).

      Though he also has some less serious and a bit more fun and nonsensical stuff like for instance "Narben" which is about a dude who keeps on almost getting himself killed so he can get the attention of the attractive nurses in the hospital.

    There are multiple meanings in each line of the lyrics. A wordsmith not unlike Eminem. Hard to understand and catch sometimes.
    This song is mainly about our wasteful way of life. We don't give a high value to anything fallen to the ground. May it be a thing or a person. It became trash and something to leave behind.

  • @daben7145
    @daben7145 Před 3 lety

    I love alligatoah and I think its awesome you're doing these videos about his songs, but learning german from them could maybe do you more harm than good, dunno, if you translate literally what he sings and dont know all the references and consider everything he has said before and even know a bit about the "lore" in his music-videos, its not even understandable for germans, you really need to listen carefully and abstract a lot, know a lot about the political landscape etc., to learn the language from it must be insanely hard, it probably would help if there are good translations of his songs in english out there, if there are, maybe its doable, but if you need to translate it yourself, could be a pain.
